Uncle Buck has a reputation for being unreliable and a bit of a house wrecker. It is therefore with reluctance, his sister-in-law agrees to leave Buck looking after the kids (two harmless youngsters and a rebelious teenager) when she visits her sick father.

THIS IS A MUST BUY FOR BLU-RAY FANS....NOT ALL BLU-RAY MOVIES BUT MOST OF THEM HAVE A 6 TIMES THE RESOLUTION COMAPARED TO STANDARD DVDS. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW THE ACTUALL MOVIE WAS FILMED.

what about uncle buck? One of the later comedies with John Candy. Family fun classic and a comedy.

With their backs against the wall when Cindy Russell's father has aheart attack and having desperately to search for someone to watch thekids as her and her husband have to go visit her ailing dad, they haveno choice but to ask Cindy's husband, Bob's slovenly brother, Buck tobabysit. John Candy is hilarious and endearing as the titular UncleBuck trying to win over the affections of his nephew and nieces that hehardly know. And the film wouldn't be half as good without his largerthan life presence. John Hughes made so many flat out amazing films inthe '80's and it's a huge testament to say that this film, as great asit is, isn't even in the top 3 of his films. That being said, it'sstill so much fun and is highly watchable. Reminds me why John Candywill always be missed and in the hearts of so many forever. Followed bya horrendous and thankfully very short-lived TV show spin-off.My Grade: A-

Right off, this is easily John Candy's best film. Most when asked.."Youknow John Candy?"...More than likely the answer will be.."Ohyeah...Uncle Buck." Like many other John Hughes films, Uncle Buck relies on Comedy and alittle bit of love. John Hughes was good at that. This was a precursorto Home Alone and when you see both back to back you'll notice theobvious similarities. A lotta comedy and a lotta love.Another one of John Hughes' strengths was casting. He couldn't havepicked a better bunch to round out this gem of a film. The 2 kids arejust perfect for what this film was made to do. There are so manymoments involving these youngsters that'll make you laugh it's just notfair. Goes to show you don't need grownup dialog to get big laughs. For me, what I remember the most when I watch this film is the lastshot in the film. I'm not ashamed to say every time I watch this filmthe last scene makes me cry. I grew up on John Candy all the way backto SCTV and when I see that parting shot of him waiving goodbye, italways reminds me of his death. He died way too young but what aperfect way to show what great actor and guy John Candy was.Man I miss John Candy.

While we all feel empathetic for the "big guys" that pass away beforetheir time I think that sympathetic is more the feeling for John Candy. While I do not know what he did in his personal life, he did not diefrom a drug overdose. And while it is sad for those guys who passedaway from drugs it is more sad that John Candy is remembered with them(Belushi, Farley). Remember, they killed themselves, John Candy didn't.While I think Belushi and Farley are great, there is no comparison tothe loveability and talent of John Candy. Now, about the movie, Uncle Buck is my favorite John Candy movie.Others are great. Others not so great. But no matter what, it's hard tochange the channel when a rerun of any of his movies, good or bad, ison TV. He is always able to pull a smile from me. A good example ofthis is that at 4am this morning I woke up, flipped thru the channelsand chose to watch Uncle Buck. It's almost 6am and I decided to come toIMDb to talk about it.And like others, I hope that some of his classics are re-released onDVD with outtakes that were never seen before. Those re-releases shouldbe dedicated to his memory rather than the last film he was in. I hadnever even heard of it until this morning. Whatever it is that they dowith his movies to remember him as time goes on , I hope its big. Realbig.gdigio2@aol.com

John Candy was an amazing comedian who didn't get a lot of chances toreally shine. Most of his movies are forgettable and lame, but JohnHughes recognized his talent and used it to make two hilarious movies(the latter, "Planes, Trains And Automobiles," is an all-time classicin my opinion). "Uncle Buck" lets Candy have great fun with the role ofa slobby bachelor who seems like the type of person to keep your kidsaway from, but who turns out to be an incredibly responsible and caringguy. He has some very funny moments, most notably the scenes with Tia'smoronic boyfriend, Bug, and trying to act cool around the kids at awild party. The supporting cast is good too, especially little MacaulayCulkin, who was always a hoot (I love the way he shouts "WHO ARE YOU!?"when he first sees Uncle Buck in the house). It's a fun movie, anddefinitely worth watching for John Candy at his best.

John Candy has his BEST performance EVER in this film by John Hughes. "Uncle" Buck Russell (Candy) is a perpetual screw-up who HAS to get his act together enough to watch over his older brother's three kids & dog, Tia, Miles, Maisy and puppy, Parsey since his sister-in-law's father had a heart attack. The cast includes Mac Culkin as Miles, Gaby Hoffman as Maisy, Amy Madigan as Buck's girlfriend, Chanice Kobolowski, & Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne's sister, Jackie) as the crazy neighbor lady, Marcie Dahlgren-Frost. Also billed in small parts are Anna Chlumsky (My Girl), Patricia Arquette, and Devon Odessa (My So-Called Life). This film is totally hilarious but also has those wonderful John Candy touching/sentimental moments. A wonderful family film that can be watched over and over again!Happy Watching!

Although I didn't manage to catch this one at the cinema back in '89(damn, I wish I did,) I'm glad I caught it soon enough on video. This was John Candy at his best, John Hughes made a gem of a decisionto cast his regular comic relief. I couldn't think of anyone else thatcould have filled Candy's role as much as he did.Everything was here that many could relate to, an Uncle that isn'twelcomed too much by the kids in the beginning eventually leaves hismark that beckons the kids for him to stay. One scene that stays sovividly fresh in my mind is when he gives a hilarious blasting to theHead Principal for putting down his cute little niece and topping itoff by telling her "to get that rat gnaw off her face". That was aline.Though comedy's can never be topped like that of the 80's it's alwaysnice to recall classic all-times with all your regular stars of backthen. They just don't make'em like they used to.9/10

I gave this an '8', which is one or two more points than it reallyshould get, but the simple fact is - I enjoy watching it over and over.John Candy shines as Uncle Buck. He brings the character alive and youcan't help but wish you had a crazy guy like that as an uncle.Well, maybe a distant uncle, but still he's warm, lovable and helplessin so many ways. As one would expect, the story is simple, the scenesmostly predictable (except maybe the ax-murder scene?) and of coursethere's a happy ending. The little kids, Maisy and Miles, played by Gaby Hoffman and a slightlyyounger Macaulay Culkin, are simply adorable! The teenage daughter(Jean Louisa Kelly) perfectly portrays a teenage girl in the throws ofthat classic imbalance between childhood and adulthood.Anyway - no one dies. No one loses an eye or an arm. No houses burndown. There are no explosions, no fighter jet scenes, no wild carchases - just plain old silly fun.Go watch it. This is not a request! Uncle Buck says watch it!

I agree with chapwithwings regarding John Candy vs Chris Farley & JohnBelushi. John Candy always had a sweetness about him that was obviousin any movie I ever saw him in & even though his comedy was sometimes alittle over the top he was still more consistently funny than eitherFarley or Belushi. He could be laugh out loud funny but so vulnerablethat you couldn't help but love him even though he was usually a bit ofloser. I just saw Uncle Buck again today. It is one of my favouritesalong with Planes, Trains & Automobiles. I forgot how impossibly cuteMacaulay Culkin & Gaby Hoffman were and Jean Louisa Kelly was totallybelievable as the angry young teen. I just really love a feel goodmovie & this is one.

Uncle Buck has become a family favorite in our house. John Candy is terrific and Jean Louisa Kelly gives a great performance as a sullen teenager unhappy with her folks and their decision to move to a new town. This is a definite movie to own and watch with your children. My only complaint is that the audio is only two tracks (vs 5.1). It would've received 5 stars otherwise.

Uncle Buck is a brilliant and fun comedy for everyone. John Candy playsUncle Buck, a guy who has to look after his brothers children for a while,as his brother and sister-in-law have to go away. The kids include arebellious teen, Tia, and two sweet young kids, Maisy and Miles. As well asthe great Joh Candy starring here, the just as great Gaby Hoffmann andMacaulay Culkin also star in this movie. I give Uncle Buck a 10/10.

This review is from: Uncle Buck (DVD) The movie is fine, but...............There is no mention in the description that this is a widescreen format. I use full screen. When I contacted amazon to find if it was available in full screen, the response was send it back if you don't want it. I kept it, but was not happy with customer service.

Uncle Buck is one of the funniest movies around. Candy's personality is enough to make you laugh even without the jokes. It's been around ten years and were still laughing and watching it all the time. The music suits the movie perfectly. "Don't just stand there, BUST A MOVE"

John Candy as Uncle Buck is exactly the right role for this talentedcomedian. The film is the story of Candy (Uncle Buck) taking care of hisbrother's three children for a few days. Uncle Buck's niece, a teen, createssome problems that must be dealt with. This is a good comedy with severaltouching moments too. Along with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, UncleBuck ranks as one of John Candy's best films.

Buck Russell is a slob, but as a last resort during a family crisis,Bob & Cindy Russell agree to let the oafish Buck babysit their threechildren.........Perhaps a tad too sugary with its moralistic social commentary, director John Hughes has none the less crafted an entertaining, and attimes heart warming film. Watching Buck bulldoze his way thru a seriesof standard chores is never less than entertaining, but it's theinterplay with the three offspring of his brother that is the filmssuccessful core. The two youngest children take to Buck straight away,to them he is like one big clown, but the relationship with theteenager daughter is fractious at best, but in typical John Hughesfashion, Uncle Buck becomes a rites-of-passage piece, and family valuescome shining to the fore from whence there was merely mirth. It's JohnCandy's show all the way, he puts enough skin on the bones of Buck tokeep him interesting in spite of the almost crass make up of hispersona, and as usual the comedy moments only serve as a reminder thatwe lost a comic talent when the big man passed away.A very safe and enjoyable 6.5/10.

This movie has been a bit of a cult classic with my family for years - I watched it again this New Years day with 3 of my brothers and between us we could practically narrated it we've seen it that often - this is a true Gem of a movie - Candy is fantastic, as well as being an incredibly funny movie, the story line is clever too with a feel good factor thru out - it really is a laugh a minute film so if you weren't previously a fan of John Candy or you haven't watch this movie - please do so immediately and your opinion of both will be forever changed

Ok! Uncle Buck is a fun-filled heart warming comedy! He is a not so neat and not much of a family person until he has an attack emergency and has to be responcable for his two neices and his nephew. He later finds out that the children have personal live and stops tham from getting in troubel and making mistakes! This is a must see movie!

One of the best movies the great John Candy made you wont be disappointed if your a fan of him you should buy this movie before they stop making it. The picture is very good and does not look like a movie made so long ago.
