I know how much Flashdance became such a huge hit of the 80's, itdefined a whole new generation of clothes, behavior, and dance moves. That's what made Flashdance so special. Now I was born in '85 so Ikinda missed out on these things, but I understand it's importance. Ijust bought this movie yesterday, it was back to back with Footloose, two iconic 80's movies, and I watched Flashdance this afternoon. Whilethis film defined a huge part of the 80's, it was an average film witha simple plot. The acting and story is just pretty average, but it's acute and fun one.Alex is a welder by day, but at night she is a sexy exotic dancer whograbs the attention of all the men. But she has big time dreams tobecome a ballet dancer, she has promised her grandmother that she wouldapply to the top ballet school and try to get an audition. But Alex isalways intimidated by the other "proper looking" dancers with tons moreexperience than her. She falls in love with a fellow co-worker, Nick, who wants her to make it just as badly. She goes through rough times, but she just wants to make it and will do anything for that chance.Flashdance is one of those must see movies if you wanna see theimportant films of the 80's. I just wanted to see what this movie wasabout since it's such a huge part of film culture. Jennifer Bealsactually did a great job as Alex, she was absolutely beautiful and madethe character very likable. While this film did not live up to myexpectations, it still was a good film. It has an awesome sound trackand really is a lot of fun to dance too. Now excuse me, but I wanna tryto take my bra off without removing my shirt, lol.5/10

For what it is this film is perfect , great dancing outstanding musicfantastic locations good acting and a dramatic story with some humourthrown in. Who could wish for more ? I saw this film five times when itcame out and actually took up dancing after seeing it. So it changed mylife bigtime as I met my wife to be in dance class. She even looked like Cynthia Rhodes the acrobatic dancer who makes afew fantastic dances in the movie and is on par with Jennifer Beals. Some people criticize this film for not being realistic , but speaking asa dancer myself I think it is very realistic but of course condensedand dramatized. So whether or not if you are or want to be a dancer :see this film.

I never saw the movie when it debuted in 1984, I didn't watch it until March2001.The movie was touching. The acting was great for a young Jennifer Beals whojust started. The music was, of course, eighties. There is one detailedwhich took my opinion of the movie down a couple of notches. In the finaldance scene of the movie, it was NOT Jennifer Beals.

If you like music, dance, and romance, I'm sure you will like this movie. It won a couple of Oscars for best original score and best original song. Jennifer Beals was also nominated as best actress. I very much enjoyed the dance scenes and music. As a matter of fact I watched the final dance scene over and over. Last but not least, the plot holds your interest. It emphasizes following your dreams and never giving up. Great flick!

This movie has some good music and dancing, in a sappy plot. But the music and dancing are not integral to the plot development; they do not carry the film in the way dancing carries "Dirty Dancing" or "The Turning Point" (both of which have better dancing, by the way.)But it's one of my favorite movies. Why? The director, Adrian Lyne, got his experience directing TV commercials, where the entire message has to be conveyed in 60 seconds, and in Flashdance every moment is contributing something. The key is the cinematography. Leonard Maltin calls Lyne a "visual stylist", and he is, but he's more. He takes Roman Polanski's cinematographic innovations and pushes them to new limits; the camera tells the story. When you watch "Flashdance", watch how light and camera angle are used. Light: Pittsburgh light, hazy, smoky, dull, reflecting off puddles, blazing from lamps, dim, bright, strobe, whatever; lighting carries the mood of each scene. As for camera angle, in most movies we are observers, outside the movie, watching the actors. In some of "Flashdance" that is also true, but then in many places the camera angle shifts so we are inside the movie, seeing what one of the actors, or several of the actors, see at that moment. It just pulls you in. If you're not familiar with the film, the first time you watch it wait for the final "audition" scene, and watch how the camera is first an observer, before the dancer enters the audition room, then sees from the dancer's view as the audition begins, and then shifts to show us what the judges see, as the dancing becomes compelling. I don't know about you, but this grabs me and pulls me in; I could watch that scene five times running. And there are many other scenes in which camera angle is used similarly but not quite as obviously. I give this movie four stars; I would give it five if the music and dancing were as well integrated with the plot as in some other movies.

I dance and this has got to be one of the worst dance moviesmade. I can't believe they are making a sequel. It might havebeen because of the eighties music, but I don't think anyone in thismovie (except the trained ballet dancers) could dance. I don't likethis movie.

OK, being a child of the '80s, of course I loved the movie the first fewtimes I saw it. Suspension of disbelief is much easier at 13. Now, being30,I just rewatched it, and my perspective is quite different. How did I not notice before that the male lead "Nick" is a totalstalker?!?!?! He first hires a guy to find out who "Alex" is after he seesher dancing. He hunts her down at her job at the steel mill, and shebrusheshim off. Not convinced, he waits for her outside the bar where she dancesatnight, and when she refuses a ride from him, he follows her home. Aftertheyget together, he watches her go into the Ballet Company, and even aftershetells him to go to hell, he finds out where her audition is, kidnaps herdog, and waits outside the building for her. OK, that is justcreepy.Adding to the creepiness is that she is only 18! 18 YEARS OLD!!!! He'slike40 something. It's almost like a weird father/daughter thing going on.EEEWWWWW.

The one over-riding theme in a lot of the comments here about Flashdanceis how it does not hold up to the test of time! What a load! It doesstand up and it is very relevant. Just check out all the dance studiosand comedy clubs full of wannabees. Most of us have dreams or had them. When I first saw this movie I was 23 and I was full of hopes andambitions. And looking back now, this movie makes me see what happenswhen you don't go for them.I loved Jennifer Beals when I saw the movie back then. Little did weknow that Jennifer was the original Jennifer Lopez. The whole PuertoRican babe with the bubble butt that drives men crazy these days wasactually on display in Flashdance! This movie sparked a fashion craze with the torn and cut-up sweats andthe leg-warmers. Who can forget the scene where Jennifer and MichaelNouri character(who seemed too old for her actually) are in herapartment and she takes off her bra from under her ripped up sweat top.Was that erotic or what?!! It also had a memorable sound-track thatstill has numbers like 'What a Feeling" and "Maniac" being played onthose 80's disco radio shows. All in all this movie was like the movie Rocky! Instead of Philly yougot Pittsburgh! Instead of a boxer, you get a dancer! Instead of thetheme song " Gonna Fly Now" with the line " feeling strong now", you get"What a Feeling". Like the nobody club boxer with no real formal boxingtraining, you get a dancer with little formal training who rises to thetop. Of course we know that in the real world, these characters wouldhave very little chance of becoming successes. Rocky Balboa would ofended up a punching bag just padding future champions records, andJennifer would

This show is the best movie i ever seen. The actors are nice....provided the songs are pleasant to my ears too. This story has a lot ofmoral behind it, like telling us to strive for our dreams and stufflike that. I really love the last part when the lead actress when aheadwith the audition in this prestigious theatre. Despite the fact thatshe never had any dancing in her entire life, ( which she is requiredto fill up in the audition form, and she do not have any dancing shoes) she still went for it. Her moves were marvelous, combining the movesof break-dance, ballet, street-dance and most importantly, flashdance.Even though she failed 1 or 2 times in the audition, she take herchances seriously and she was accepted by the judges. So I would reallyrecommend this show to everyone, whether young or old, male or female.

I was a sophomore in college when this movie came out and I had neveractually seen it until last night. I finally decided to watch itbecause I like good dancing and because the movie had such culturalimpact. After seeing the movie I am completely baffled by how it hadany effect other than putting people to sleep. The story is pretty preposterous when you think about it. Does anyoneactually buy the idea that that beer joint full of gnarly oldsteel-workers and teamsters could keep their clientèle with the highconcept dances that those girls were doing? They would have all beenover to Zanzibar faster than you can say "performance art". Can youimagine the reaction of the real life versions of that audience to thatbizarre TV watching No theater dance thing that she did? Please. It seems plausible to me that there could be a woman that worked in asteel yard and was also a dancer--after all both are physicallydemanding jobs. But I didn't buy for a second that THAT girl worked ina steel yard. And I didn't buy for a second that I was looking at areal steel yard. Steel work is dangerous. You don't keep your work arealooking like a junk yard and not end up loosing a limb. I love some ofthe inane shots like when two welders are sitting in the big corrugatedtubes welding. What the hell are they doing in there? Or when she iscutting six inches off of a rusty steel bar with a cutting torch. Shewas obviously board and just started cutting random things up.But story holes like that can be overlooked if the movie is fun or atleast stimulating in some way. Flashdance doesn't offer anything tobalance it, however. The dancing horrible. It is the spastic twitch-and-pose style thatruined American musicals until...well are we really over it yet? Thesensuality that the movie tries for is ruined by Jennifer Beal'scomplete lack of personality. I mean I am a 42 year old male and whenshe was supposed to be eating lobster my only reaction was to thinkthat she should get a lobster bib.You can't really get behind Alex and her dreams because her characteris so stupid and shallow. The dog had more going on than she did.The love affair is flat. It comes across as nothing more than a bosswith the hots for one of his workers. Zero passion.Even the final scene where she dances for Orville Redenbacher and someother stiffs is unsatisfying because the panels reaction is sounbelievable. What serious dancers wouldn't roll their eyes at Alex'slame cheerleader routine? In short the movie had nothing butleg-warmers and large sweatshirts. Oh, yeah, there is a good chunk ofnudity when Alex "rescues" her friend from being a useless eroticdancer (a laughable bit of hypocrisy). Other than that the movie is awaste of time. I wish that the MST3K crew were still in business. Thiswould make good fodder for them.

Flashdance for the 80's was what the original French film La Femme Nikita was for the 90's. Both films presented us with very stylish (almost smoky and noirish)atmospheres and intelligent sensual women in the lead...The soundtrack I have owned in 3 formats over the years (first tape, then vinyl, now c.d.). The music was the pinnacle or the point beyond disco and other musical pop styles or fads that came before it !Director Adrian Lyne's sense of style was the culmination of what the early 80's MTV era was all about without ever compromising quality or artisitic integrity. His work never bordered on cheapness or rip offs. Flashdance was an original...This is a great stylish film from the 80's for good ol' memories' sake and nothing more. It's almost a guilty pleasure. For those offended by this film for portraying women in a bad light, please do yourselves a favor and just don't watch it !Don't expect anything deep or revealing other than the music, dancing, and the ladies wearing very little...

There are dirty, moneygrubbing thugs in this movie, not ashamed to makemoney from sex. They operate a strip club, from which one of thecharacters is "rescued." This movie is made by the same sort ofmoneygrubbing thugs (Gruber, Peters, Bruckheimer) , and there's nodoubt that sex is at the top of its values. It has essentially nostory, only a series of setups. Its clearly designed to sell music, which then was LPs.And yet it works for me. The reason is that its cinematic, a and finelyso. I'm usually pretty tough on films that feature dance, unless thecamera itself dances. This one doesn't. But what it does have is crispediting and superb, absolutely superb lighting.I think dePalma started this and did the stuff that works, thestoryboards, the lighting design. I imagine he supervised the scoutingof the dirty sets where we see smoke, glow and sparks. I imagine heworked out the tricks where the face is occluded so that we can swapour actress with real dancers, several of them.So you can find three things to like here: the fold where the smarmyguys are in the movie, the fantastic lighting, beginning with the veryfist shots, and the dancing. It almost seems as if the dancing cameafter the major cinematic decisions. It was unusual for the time: moreenergetically sensual. Tight in energy but lose in inspiration. All ofthe dances have an on screen audience, but one: the "manic" dance. Thatlack of on screen audience after the deliberate inclusion of oneinvites us in. And this dance is photographed differently. We don't see the wholebody: we see parts, and while the camera doesn't spatially move, itdoes temporally. The editors dance. The visual rhythm invokesvoyeurism, identification and syncopation all at the same time. This issignificant movie-making, hidden in a rather trivial-seeming wrapper. Gruber at the time advertised this as "Rocky with a woman," but there'sno resemblance story-wise. There is with the energy though.Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.

I sometimes feel embarrassed when I tell people I like this film as it isquite "girlie" (in my opinion), but I really do like it. I am a fan of 80'smusic and Flashdance has some great music. My favorites are "Flashdance-What A Feeling" by Irene Cara and "Maniac" by Michael Sembello. JenniferBeals is also great. I also thought that the film could be a bit moreentertaining. But the great music makes up for it!Entertainment- 6 out of 10. Music- 10 out of 10.

From director Adrian Lyne (9 ½ Weeks, Fatal Attraction, Jacob'sLadder), this film has probably one of the most recognisable danceroutines ever put in a film, I had to see if the rest of the film wasany good too. Basically Alexandra 'Alex' Owens (Roger Dodger's GoldenGlobe nominated Jennifer Beals) is an eighteen year old who works in aPittsburgh, Pennsylvania steel mill as a welder by day, but by nightshe expresses her true passion for dance, exotically doing so inMawby's bar. Despite no real training, she has taught herself plenty ofmoves, and dreams of becoming a professional (ballet) dancer, startingwith enrolling at Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. AtMawby's bar, she attracts the interest of her steel mill boss NickHurley (Michael Nouri), neither have met each other, and she hasfriends at the bar who have their dreams of fame as well. WaitressJeanie Szabo (Sunny Johnson) wants to become a professional ice skater, and her boyfriend Richie Blazik (Kyle T. Heffner) is a cook who wantsto be a stand-up comedian, we see them both try their hand at thesecareer choices. Alex did plan to go to the Conservatory to sign up foran audition, but she realised with no training she hasn't got enoughqualifications, but her dance teacher and mentor, retired ballet dancerHanna Long (Lilia Skala) encourages her to go ahead with trying to keepgoing. We saw Jeanie fall twice at her skating audition, and afterlosing her confidence she turns to dancing at The Zanzibar, a stripclub where she performs nude, but Alex rescues her. Nick and Alex havebecome lovers, he does reveal he has an ex-wife named Katie (BelindaBauer), and arguments do settle, and he is able to get Alex an auditionwith his contacts at the Conservatory. Despite being a little mad withNick getting an audition for her, and suffering the death of Hanna,Alex soldiers on an turns up for her important audition for the dancingschool. She does fall and need to start again, but she confidentlyperforms a great routine to the Oscar and Golden Globe winning, andBAFTA nominated Irene Cara title song "Flashdance...What A Feeling"(number 55 on 100 Years, 100 Songs), and the end of the film seesrunning happily out of the building to hug Nick and freeze frame. Alsostarring Lee Ving as Johnny C., Ron Karabatsos as Jake Mawby, MalcolmDanare as Cecil, Philip Bruns as Frank Szabo and Micole Mercurio asRosemary Szabo. Beals makes a pretty and quite admirable character, thefilm has a good soundtrack, not just with the title song, but the othermemorable song, Oscar and Golden Globe nominated "Maniac", indeed thefinal routine scene, recreated by Geri Halliwell for "It's Raining Men"among others, is the reason to watch, but overall, not a bad musicaldrama. It was nominated the Oscars for Best Cinematography and BestFilm Editing, it won the BAFTA for Best Editing, and it was nominatedfor Best Score for Giorgio Moroder and Best Sound, and it won theGolden Globe for Best Original Score for Giorgio Moroder, and it wasnominated for Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical, and it wasnominated the Razzie for Worst Screenplay. Worth watching!

When it comes to dance movies, it depends on what kind it is. Here, wetalk about a movie who won an Oscar for Best Original Song, called"What a Feeling". Cool. Let's check it out. Now onto to the rest ofmovie before we go carrying ourselves away.So apparently we're talking about an 80's dancing hottie who somehowsteps out of the shadow of working jobs at both a welding plant and astripper pole. That's cool, but nothing really special. In fact, whenit comes to stories about people who step up from shadows, Step Up hasdone this quite better than this. That's not to say this was bad, because it actually wasn't despite the negative reviews. Anyway, character development doesn't quite qualify as a strong point here, asthe only close to developed character was Alex, played surprisinglywell by Jennifer Beals. There is too the believability to consider, which is actually passable with Flashdance. You can believe thatsomeone could end up falling so far as to work in a nudist bar. You canbelieve that someone will just fall flat in their faces when they'rehaving auditions. You can believe that you can find out your bestfriend quit their job from their boss. But that's not all. I also foundmyself laughing at some parts of the movie because some parts seem totake a more comedic twist than the rest of the movie. Yet one thingthat can't be ignored is that the movie was too predictable that it wasnot unlike anything seen before. For example, I was able to predict thefall of Alex's best friend and the plot trajectory she was forced to gothrough as the movie unfolded. The movie was a little mixed in myopinion, even though it knew where it wanted to go.Now, for the Oscar-winning song. I've heard the song, but that doesn'tmean I didn't like it. It fit very well in the movie, along with allthe other music inserted in the movie, and that probably was the bestpart of the movie, so I'll take a cheers to that. (August 1st, 2011)Grade: C-/C (6.4/10 Rating)

Sure, Flashdance will never make the AFI's Top 100, but it has aninfectiouscharm. Jennifer Beals is really only so-so in the leading role, and herleading man Michael Nouri is no better off, but it doesn't matter. Whatdoesmatter here is the great music! Really, the whole film is played like a90-minute ad for MTV! Laugh at the dopey plot and listen to the greattunes.Great film to earmark the 80s.

"Flashdance" is an iconic 1980s film, memorable for its terrific music, the collarless t-shirt and sweatshirt, and some fabulous dancing. Italso launched the career of beautiful Jennifer Beals. The interesting thing about "Flashdance" is that there's really notmuch to it at all. It's a bare-bones story about a Pennsylvania welder(Beals) by day, men's club dancer at night - the dances are sexy andcreative performances without nudity, money being thrown at you, etc.The boss of her day job (Michael Nouri) sees her dance and falls forher. She wants to audition for the Philadelphia Dance Repertory Companybut she has no real training, she's just naturally gifted. She'sencouraged by an elderly friend (Lilla Skala). The reality is it plays like a bunch of music videos. The photographyrelies heavily on the use of shadows and silhouettes during thedancing, which is quite effective. The acting is so-so; Michael Nouri is fine, but he doesn't have much todo. Cynthia Rhoades, a fabulous dancer who retired after marriage, ispretty and credible as a friend. Beals, who put her career on hold tofinish college, is sweet; her acting improved over time. None of thecharacters are particularly well developed - it's all dialogue inbetween the music.Nevertheless, "Flashdance" is an exuberant film that appeals to theyouth in all of us, that "take your passion and make it happen"mentality, with all that music making you want to get up and dance. There were three different dance/acrobatic doubles used for Beals. Ican remember it was a semi-scandal when the woman who did most of thedancing was revealed; the studio kept it quiet and didn't credit thedancers.A light, fun film that gave the '80s some great music and fun fashion.
