CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILERS This movie "Unthinkable" is a mystery to me.The mystery is how anybody could think this was a good movie even worthwatching for free on cable TV.I was impatient for something to happen and frustrated at thecontinual, silly, repetitiveness of this movie and the extraordinaryslow pacing. Basically, a terrorist (typically gives his new religiousname and his old American name), makes a video telling the governmentthat he has placed three nuclear weapons in three populated citieswhich will go off on Friday at noon unless his demands are met. Hedoesn't state his demands and then lets himself be easily captured. If this sounds a little silly, then you don't know the half of it as itgets worse. Naturally he is taken to a secret military base. Naturallya specialist is brought in to "interrogate" him (surprise, by torture)and a "good" FBI officer is also brought in who hates torture, hatesthe military "interrogator," sympathizes with the terrorist, physicallyattacks the interrogator, and doesn't seem concerned about the tenmillion people who might die when the bomb(s) detonate. It isestablished very early that fissionable material has been lost by, ofcourse, the Russians and the Iranians. She doesn't seem to care aboutthat either. The bad guy (no, not the terrorist, but the interrogator) and the goodguy (this FBI agent) go back and forth with him torturing and herfighting him and asking the terrorist to please change your ways andtell us where the bombs are. At least tell us what your demands are. This goes back and forth, back and forth, etc. while you wait forsomething, anything, to take place. You want to turn off the movie andsee something useful (such as a nice test pattern), but you are curiousabout what is going to happen - so you watch and watch. This goes backand forth, who knows how many times, until surprise, something doeshappen - the credits role. Then you realize that two hours of your lifethat you trashed watching this movie are gone from your life, never toreturn. How is it possible that Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Sheenstar in this movie?! It has to be better, doesn't it?! No, it doesn't.This is about the worst movie I have ever seen, certainly the mostfrustrating and silly, especially with two respected stars. Don't payto see this movie; don't buy the DVD; and don't waste your time seeingit for free on cable or satellite! The only point of interest is howdid so many people post positive ratings and reviews of this monster, boring movie.

This was a entertaining psychological torture thriller that grabs yourattention throughout most of the film. Samuel L. Jackson is known to beintimidating in a lot of his roles, but he is really scary in this oneand he ain't really the bad guy. I would go as far as call him somewhatof a hero in this movie, and rarely does a movie portray a guy thattortures people to be a hero. But I thought he was in this movie andwas actually rooting for him throughout most of the movie, well untilCarrie-Anne Moss's character constantly started interfering with hiswork. This movie basically shows how far people will go in order tosurvive and save the ones they love, basically human nature. I alsoliked how although the terrorist is the bad guy, it shows hisperspective on things as well. Although it has a few plot holes andunrealistic at times with some situations, it's still worth checkingout. It's most definitely a great straight to DVD movie.7.6/10

No bad people in this movie.Good American guy is sick of corporate and military US exploiting and running amok in his religion's homelands and other foreign countries. Afghanistan, Iraq. He wants to make a difference so he reaches for extreme measures.Good American guy wants to prevent innocent deaths in his own country so he also reaches for extreme measures.Good American woman struggles to come to terms with such extreme measures. No cheap testosterone fuelled violence here, this is about good hearted and intelligent individuals trying to get results when they are really desperate. How far would you go?

Steven A. Younger, (Sheen) is a captured American Muslim terrorist whohas planted 3-nuclear bombs in 3-US cities, and it is Henry Herald "H"Humphries' (Jackson) job to interrogate Younger to locate the bombs. H(he wants to be called) does things other interrogators would neverdream of doing, and he has the backing of the government because hegets results. So you say you've seen movies that made you think. Hmmmm   ..Well thisone will negate all you have seen in the past. Let's see how you dowith torture. Is it justified ? Well, watch and think about it.Because of the torture aspect, this is probably the most intense movieI have ever watched. Of course, along with the torture is the screaming(sometimes that was me) and the blood and gore factor. Still with us?The thing that makes this almost really real is that the cast believeall that they are doing, whether it's to stop the torture or let itcontinue. Still deciding? Keep telling yourself "its only a movie."This may be Samuel L. Jackson's finest moment and an Oscar nominationwould not surprise me. I was expecting more pontificating from him ashe is prone to do. Oh, he did some of it, but it came in spurts and nota long diatribe. And, they made sense too. Does that make sense? Hmmm .As for Michael Sheen, well, he may have second thoughts about signingon to this type of movie in the future. It's a far cry from playingBritain's Tony Blair or David Frost. A far cry indeed. Carrie-Anne Mossas FBI Agent Helen Brody is new to me and it was fun to see her changesides, change back and then change back again. Cool. Now, what could it be that would be UNTHINKABLE? That is the title ofthis movie. Think about it. The ending didn't surprise me because of what was learned in the almostfinal scenes. It actually made sense.Violence: Yes. Bloody Violence: Yes. Bloody Torture: Yes. Sex: No.Nudity: No. Language: Yes.

Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie Anne-Moss are superb but Michael Sheen's performance as the tortured terrorist is simply brilliant in an Oscar-worthy performance. The movie addresses how far will one go to protect himself or his country. The movie is graphic and disturbing--you can't take your eyes off of it. The climax is sudden and doesn't answer a pivotal question, but I think this is intentional. The movie is all about what we will do or shouldn't do. It's a very well done thriller.

I stumbled across this movie, I had never heard of this movie and did not even know that it existed. I looked at the cast and plot and decided to try it out..My husband was so pleased with this movie, this movie kept his attention all the way through,.... so what huh? Well I made this statement because he usually falls asleep during movies. And as for me it kept my attention as well. This movie has so much to offer. I don't want to spoil the movie for you. So all that I will say is that I was so surprised to stumble across this great find of a movie!.. Try it out I really think that you will like it..It is packed with great things.. It really is "Unthinkable"....

i think both parties have valid points to justify their acts, but firstthe tortured guy because every 1 knew what American and jews does everyday with Muslims specially in Pakistan (drown attacks).but i appreciateall the team director story writer who bring both sides of pictures sojusticely.any one have the right to protect their family no matterhow.but you have to understand that American government provide lot ofreasons to mujhahidin to xploit in front of Muslims and recruit them, simply to blow them and kill others.so America itself is the biggestenemy of world peace and American citizens. but i again appreciate thedirector work of balancing both sides

This movie was like a bad CSI episode where morally conflicted characters cannot make up their minds on whether the end justifies the means. I felt like I was watching Nancy Pelosi & Bill O'Reilly in a grade school debate. The writers & directors make zero effort to portray any proper military / agency protocol. In keeping with the quality of the film, it ends abruptly without any closure. Generally, I watch movies for entertainment. I do not watch movies hoping to garner some lame director's political agenda. This one joins the ranks of "The Happening," where you walk out of the theater asking, "So... global warming is real?" Except this one is so bad, with so many loose ends the only question you'll be asking is, "Why did I just waste 97 minutes of my life watching this?"

UNTHINKABLE INDEED.THIS MOVIE IS A REAL TASTE OF A POSSIBLE REALITY IN TODAY'S WORLD AND SAMIEL L. JACKSON DRIVES IT HOME IN AN ACADEMY AWARD PREFORMACE. THIS MOVIE CLEARLY AND GRAPHICALLY POINTS OUT THAT AMERICA IS AT WAR WITH STOP AT NOTHING TERRORIST AND WHY IF WE ARE TO WIN THIS WAR THE USA WILL HAVE TO DO THE SAME LIKE IT OR NOT.....NEVER THE LESS THE ALTERNATIVE IS THE...... UNTHINKABLE.....THUS, THE ENDING....CONCLUSION: THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD NEED TO FIND A WAY TO GET ALONG AND REALIZE WE HAVE MORE IN COMMON THAN NOT AND IF THE WORLD IS TO SURVIVE FOR OUR CHILDREN'S SAKE WE NEED TO CHANGE.....GREAT MOVIE FOR THINKING THE UNTHINKABLE AND TO START THINKING ABOUT HOW MAYBE IT IS TIME TO RETHINK HOW BEST TO DO IT BEFORE THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS.

I had high hopes when this film started, atomic bombs planted, perhaps a race against the clock to find them? No, just an excuse for torture scenes and lots of overwrought acting, avoid at all costs.A waste of time. I cannot understand the rave reviews on this site.I usually like films that feature Samuel Jackson but not this one.Check outLakeview Terrace, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction to see what a good film isall about.

This was a terrible movie.Okay, to be fair, I don't like 24 and other cheesy detective/FBI/intelligence "thrillers". I like the good ones, but I can't stand the sort of made-for-TV, fake, overly dramatized ones with extraordinarily cliche lines. This movie is filled with good ol' cliche lines like:- "What IS this place?" when walking into an unknown building. You know the fake exclamation.- "But can I ask what this is reference to?" "That's classified by DIA."- "Who classified this?" Answer: "Military intelligence" in a very important voice. Response: "That's an oxymoron." Hasn't that been in like 20 movies?- Not a line, but the 3 bombs all have huge LED screens that clearly display "Hours, Minutes, Seconds", and then the guy watching the video says in a highly fake annoying voice: "Geee that's only 3 days from now!" And the "nuclear" cannister with the Russian printed all over it, turned perfectly to the camera - like one of those coke can placements on movies.- Then there's the ridiculous scene with the washed-up looking 2 star general who says, "He was one of us... ... Delta Force." lol how cliche can you be? How come Rambo wasn't in this movie?I can go on, as that was what I remember from the first 15 minutes alone, but you get the point.Anyway, if you like 24 a LOT - I mean, so much that you can't live without it - then watch this movie. If you only sort of liked 24, or if you like other spy/thriller/detective movies that are actually good, don't go near it.

Skipping that in movie everything was bad: tons of people working with1 guy, access that they've gave to him (gun), just ALL was wrong andtotally nonsense.Basically, everything in this movie is: UNTHINKABLE, but in the worstpossible sense.Intention of this movie was to show (rather: brainwash) people thattorture's are good or rather necessary. It was beautifully dealt inthis movie. If you're searching for some torture techniques you would probably finda better movie. If you're searching for psychological clues - it's noteven the good pick. What I can say. If you're looking for sensation or good movie, avoidthis one. Some of people watched this movie, because they wereintrigued what would happen if they would step aside from the crowd, particularly it doesn't need to be a nuclear bomb. Did they found it?Yes and no, you decide.

I think this film has very deep ideas that you will be thinking about for hours after seeing it. The scene where he makes his demands is very important, while the demands themselves are extremely important. As for the first demand, this film shows several facts, most importantly that the US doesn't deal with the main problem, the root of all other problems. Also, the foreign policy is very much away from the right path, because of which, millions of Arabs and Muslims around the world hate the US, disbelieving what is said about a real intention and desire of democracy and peaceful world. And as for the second demand, is there anybody out there who still believes US invaded Iraq looking for mass destruction weapons? and all of the sudden, not only that it has none, but it happens to have a massive amount of oil.Back to the film itself, of course nothing justifies killing or threatening innocent lives with nuclear bombs, but I shall quote from the film when Younger shouted saying: I love my country, you people crap on it! I love my religion and you people spit on it!.. You expect me to weep over 50 civilians?! You people kill that number everyday!I shall add: Or is there somebody who thinks humans shouldn't be treated the same, and shredding blood of Arabs and Muslims has no valueSomething else, It's funny this film doesn't have the cast&crew listed, which accordingly made it not listed neither in Michael Sheen's filmography nor Samuel L. Jackson's, though it is a very good film that must be considered in both actors filmographies.

This is one of those films which try to deal with a very serioussubject matter , to provoke questions in audience's minds ,and to givethe all answers to the questions provoked. Frankly the way filmmakersmade this movie provoked me to ask a lot more questions than thequestions rose in the movie.(THIS MIGHT BE A SPOILER) What I understoodthe premise was ''how far can a state go to prevent a clear threat fromits citizen''. What I ended up was ''.As long as there is ajustification ,ill actions can be justified. Of course moronic bad guydeserved all kind of inhuman treatment ,since he was planning to takethousands' lives ,and I can't see why the idea is so brilliant ,sinceon a smaller scale ,this is called self-defense.(MORE SPOILER) Now my questions are that the filmmakers really had touse stereotypical bad Muslim guy to get their message across, or did hereally had to be a converted westerner who deeply sympathize with thesufferings of those who experience the war. Why would filmmakers needsuch a stereotypical character ,because it would be more relevant tocontemporary religious, cultural and political issues??? Why would badone need to explain his own reasons to blow up innocent people, whywould this character planned to endure inhuman treatment in Jesus-likeway, maybe to make the others care about what he is saying? He seemedto long for a peace ,if so, why would he place bombs rather than justbluffing anyway? what was his motivation. Let me tell you something hismotivation wasn't necessary since he acted exactly the same way anantagonist does, and make the audience lose his/her sympathy for him.In other words, we forget about what he was saying and focused on thissick man's behavior. So what we have in the end is a nothing more thana movie avoiding to conflict with dominant political power and a movieready to be consumed in its cultural market.

Not about the film, but about the bad reviews that I scrolled through.I'm confused about how someone could suggest that this is promoting thetorture of Muslims or the War on Terror. What we learn in this film is that this "terrorist's" objective waspeace. We learn that he expected us to torture him like an animal(which we did). And we learn that we have questionable limits to ourpolicy of engagement. Had the "fourth" bomb gone off, and validated thenotion that they should have tortured the daughters more. But itdidn't. Instead, what we assume is that they found all three of thebombs. This movie isn't war propaganda, it's peace propaganda. When theterrorist asks, "You expect me to cry over 53 people when you kill thatmany each day?" He raises an excellent point. A point that should makeus question our international actions-how what we're doing in othercountries is acceptable, but the notion of anyone doing it in ours isout of the question. How our rules of engagement seem to be sodifferent if the person is tagged "An American Citizen."This film was well produced, well acted, and discussed a lot of currentissues that the public NEEDS to engage in. This wasn't promoting war orslamming Muslims. We all know that extremist Muslims exist, the newstells us about them every time they mention the word "suicide bomber."This movie asks the next question, "Why do they exist?" And the answermay be much less "terrorist-like" than we would have wanted.

wow what a movie !! i haven't seen anything like this in along time ..we can't say that it is an awful movie like what some of u said in yourreviews .. that so unfair .. u totally missing it ! the point is thatUSA is middling in the middle east politics & it should just stop ..they are saying that the Muslims are terrorists & barbarians .. whatabout them .. what r they doing in Iraq .. is that justified ?!! MaybeI'm taking that way too far ..! maybe ! i usually hate the politicsstuff but this movie made me think of so many things & most of them arejust true !It's a great movie & i enjoyed it so much .

Just finished watching the whole awful mess. Paints American's in a typical leftist mode. Absolute rubbish of a film. Let me get this straight. We waterboard 3 POW's for intel, and now we also cut testicles, chop off fingers, slash a woman's throat, and the best part, torture children. Anyone who likes this must be a far left loon, read Mother Jones, and be devoted to MSNBC. Terrorists have cut off the heads of civilians and make you tube videos showing it, and we are the bad guys? Nonsense. The United States is a beacon of freedom and hope to billions all around the world and anyone who says different has deep seated self hatred and must alleviate this by putting down their own country.
omarshahin 27 March 2012
The film goes into the recently repetitive drama of when should torturebe condoned and spices it up by including an "unthinkable" element...However, I believe that it forgoes one important fact, the man behindthe plot could have simply placed the bombs and disappeared, they mayhave never been able to locate him, in fact the whole idea of someonebeing able to design, construct and assemble several nuclear bombswithout being detected in any phase of his plot seems to point tosevere incompetence on the part of those agencies that are nowcompeting to show who would do best at torturing in the hope of savingthe day! I think the use of torture is done by frustrated incompetentagencies that vent out their failures often on people who cannot helpthem out of the mess they're in. In the movie, the fact that theplotter is the person being tortured merely changes anything. Tortureitself is never justified, and considering the billions of dollarsspent at tracking and insuring the safety of fissile material, thosethat should be punished are the ones who failed to do their jobsproperly, because the odds of foiling a real plot of such magnitude ifit gets to that stage would be very slim.

8 Stars First off, I would definitely say this is a pretty good movie. The ideas about torture and how far one would go are well presented, ifnot all that much in a subtle way. I was reminded of "24" torturescene, stretched over an hour and a half, without the guarantee of JackBauer getting the answer going in (minus the last season one). Itactually asks some questions, and unlike a lot of the people whoreviewed this, I personally don't think it was too biased one way orthe other. The questions it asks are ones like: "Is the use of torturesuccessful?", "How far would one go to get results, especially to savethousands, maybe millions of lives?", and "Is the life of one personworth the lives of thousands?" Having seen the American version, justlike the American version of "The Descent" it is altered in asignificantly negative way, by cutting out the last 30 sec - 1 minute.I won't ruin it, but after reading the Wikipedia article, I'm supremelydisappointed they cut it out. That in and of itself kind of slants themovie in one direction I suppose, if you really want to see it thatway. That was really frustrating to me.The movie continually ratchets up the tension as the situation getsmore dire. This is in direct correlation to the level with which 'H'goes to get results through the use of torture. Despite what some maysay about the gore, just about everything happens off-camera, onlycutting back to occasionally see the aftermath. The gore is not theproblem, the problem is the feelings/thoughts it stirs up in you whenthis is going on. It's quite surprising to realize that this is what'sgoing on. As the film reaches its climax, the tension is almostunbearable, knowing to what level 'H' will go to. Like "Se7en", thismovie doesn't have an unnamed, unfindable antagonist. Michael Sheen (inby far the best performance of the movie) is there from almost theget-go. He's just smarter than people give him credit, also like JohnDoe from "Se7en". The movie basically takes place in one location, sopretty much all the budget probably went to Samuel L.Finally, the acting. It was basically Samuel L Jackson playing 'SamuelL Jackson, intense mode', but with a little more depth, especially aseven he has to get sickened by what he's doing. Carrie Ann Moss waspretty low-key, and mediocre. Brandon Routh was in like 3 scenes.Really just the aforementioned Sheen had a very good performance.Samuel L was good, but still him. Overall, a thought provoking movie Iwould certainly recommend. I would just advise to take it easy onobserving it with a particular political slant. You might find yourselfagreeing with what the "other side" might say.
krigler 21 March 2012
"Unthinkable" is an argumentative essay on torture coated in athriller. Samuel L. Jackson goes Jack Bauer on a Muslim terrorist (who, possibly in the name of political correctness, is a Caucasian American)to "find out where the bomb is". And, of course, "damn it, we'rerunning out of time!" Meanwhile, Carrie Ann Moss plays "the reasoncharacter", representing the sane part of the audience, arguing thatusing torture on them means the terrorists have won. A premise severalfilms and a handful of TV shows have explored in the past few years indetail. The narrative proceeds in a clear and obvious trajectory, meaning thereare no big surprises along the way, every twist and turn are visiblefar ahead. This is not to say the film is without tension, it's justonce the characters are established, the story does not have anywhereto go but the predictable path. What make the movie a worthwhile watchare the performances. Although Jackson basically plays himself - whichis always entertaining - Michael Sheen's acting is very sinister andsuggestive, while subtle. The rest of the cast are doing a great jobtoo. Photography and directing are top notch, although that is to beexpected from a production this size. Sometimes it's good to hear bothsides of an issue, even if it's a grave one like the former USgovernment's endorsement of torture. If it comes in the form of awell-paced, albeit not very surprising narrative, all the better."Unthinkable" manages not to be too heavy handed and preachy, andthat's welcome.
