Reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen's 'Golden Voyage of Sinbad' without the mythical monsters, 'Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time' delivers the goods where so many of these silly costume adventures fail. A nice mix of good vs. evil story and some exciting parkour action sequences make this film very exhilarating and entertaining. I found it humorous that Ben Kingsley appropriately played a homage to Torin Thatcher who played the sorcerer in another Harryhausen classic 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad' and the inspired rip off 'Jack the Giant Killer'.Jake Gyllenhaal aptly plays the hero and all supporting characters fit as well including a colorful role for Alfred Molina. Even if you don't usually like these types of films, this one is an easy and fun ride. Recommended to all costume adventure or Harryhausen film fans. Even though there are none of Harryhausen's creatures, this one surely has his heart.

I never played this video game but as an Assassin's Creed fan I can seehow it must have played and, although games are always best playedrather than watched (ask my girlfriend  she knows), lots of films havemade free-running related action into quite thrilling sequences orfilms (Casino Royale, District 13 come to mind). The plot here sees aPrince fleeing after being accused of the murder of his father theKing. With him he takes the beautiful princess of the city they havejust sacked, although her reasons for coming along are less to do withhim and more to do with the supernatural dagger he has looted, unawareof its power. As he tries to clear his name, he comes to realise thatthe dagger was the target all along and that someone has been after itfrom the very start.Prince of Persia was one of several blockbusters that I ignored in2010, partly because of the poor word of mouth and reviews but also todo with my decreased appetite for overpriced cinema tickets just towatch rubbish marketed as gold. I cannot remember a lot of dislike forthis film though, but it was just the lack of positive reviews thatmade me throw it to the back of my mind with a note to maybe check itout on DVD or happily wait 4 years for it to wash up for free onterrestrial television. Anyway, I watched it sooner than that but myattitude of apathy was the same as I was told it was the movie choicefor the evening! However I quite enjoyed it for what it was. It hasenough solid qualities to make it work and entertain for about twohours, even if it is entirely forgettable once you eject it from theplayer! The plot is clunky and obvious but it sets up frequent chasesand action sequences that perhaps don't provide substance but at leastprovide distracting noise, which is good enough for a Friday night.Well, perhaps not Friday night but this is a really good matinée for awet Saturday or Sunday afternoon  which in years to come will be whereit plays well to a family audience. The action is solid, providing lotsof near misses and close escapes and lots of impressive free-running.It isn't ever really thrilling though and the danger never feels real Âno matter who dies around them, one never feels like the lead two areever in real peril. This sort of flattens things as it misses thisquality and at the same time it can apply to other aspects as wellbecause the film does generally seem to be close but still lackingsomething. A spark perhaps? It has it at times because it has thecomedy, it has the potential thrills, it has some good chemistry but itnever quite makes everything work as it should, which is why it didn'tthrill.I hate the franchise but the first Pirates of the Caribbean film got itright  fun, exciting and all just there to be enjoyed and not take tooseriously; Prince of Persia has the same sort of feel but doesn't quitecarry it off. I enjoyed Gyllenhaal even if his accent took a minute toget used to. He is fit enough to convince in the action and he gives usa bit of a cheeky swagger that constantly reminds us we are supposed tobe enjoying the film. Arterton works reasonably well with him but neverto the point where they had a real spark or energy from their pairing.Kingsley does his usual shtick without ever appearing to be working toohard but fortunately we have Alfred Molina bouncing around because heis consistently fun and adds an element of irreverent comedy intoproceedings. The supporting cast are all decent enough as all they dois make sure and not be bad. Mike Newell was an odd choice for directorand he doesn't really seem suited to it  his direction is solid butnot thrilling, like the film as a whole really.Overall Prince of Persia will be coming soon to a Saturday afternoonslot near you and it will fit in there perfectly. It is a solid familymatinée with action without real peril, death without blood, romancewithout sex or nudity ad all set in a fantasy world that is safe anddistant. I can see why audiences generally didn't fancy it when it wasbeing pushed as the big movie of that weekend, but it is good enoughand bland enough to do the job when under less of a spotlight.

Disney exudes from this film, even during the creepy parts. And thereare creepy parts...snakes, snakes being cut open...among other things.Still, it is Disney. Lots of feel-good moments, some great plugs fortraditional family life and values. (No offense to anyone who disagreeswith that concept.) I wish I could buy this movie, but frankly, thewomen just don't wear enough clothes. Nor do I think that Jasmine andthe Little Mermaid wear enough clothes. There, I said it. And, it giveseveryone reading this a reference to go by when they consider themovie. Biggest complaint? Technically speaking, that is... :-) I cannotstand the way that the camera-man insists on viewing the fight scenesfrom the inside! Backing up enough to let the rest of us watch it, too, would be nice. More than once I couldn't tell up from down or which waythings were going. Happy ending, witty remarks, semi-brilliant plotline... I would buy it if the wardrobe department hadn't misplaced somuch material.

I know there is nothing new under the Sun, but this time it really feels like the story is a cotton T-shirt that's been washed so many times it is see-through.

Even though I was disappointed with a very bad opening of the movie Ikept watching because, well, I am a Persian and had to see the movieabout my country. However it was evident from beginning that the'Prince of Persia' was not much about Persia but more about Hollywood. So here is my take of the movie: 'Prince of Persia' suffers from lackof character and plot development; audience are forced to understandthe interaction between characters without prior explanation. It alsosuffers from incoherent action sequences, for instance in some shotsthe actor Jack Gyllenhaal jumps in the air in dangerous situations andin the very next shots and without any explanation he is in a safelanding. According to an article in LA Times, the creators of the moviehad no idea of what they were working on. The director of the movie,Mike Newell confesses "I didn't know 'Prince of Persia' at all." Iwould not have expected anything better from someone as clueless aboutPersia as Newell, but the producers felt Newell was good because hedirected English story 'Harry Potter' movie, a subject that wasfamiliar to the British born Newell. Since the movie 'Avatar' I havebeen comparing other movies and other movie creators to a new standardin movie making called 'Avatar'. While rare people who made 'Avatar'are professional story tellers who are also concerned with theintelligence of their audience, others and majority of movie makers inHollywood consider their audience bunch of simpleton morons who shouldbe satisfied with any nonsense thrown at them.

After reading some of the comments here, I went to see the film despitethem. There were many positive ones but a lot of pans. Some reviewscalled it a bad video game movie. Other comments seem to stretch tocriticize it. The good reviews did not mesh with the bad.I was just surprised by the film. Nowhere, and I repeat nowhere, doesone get the feeling that this is a bad game film. It seems the badreviews are not even connected to the film. This was a very entertaining movie. Good casting/acting, a decent plot- not as predictable as one might think, and a well-written, wryscript. Lots of action too. If past the halfway point I was satisfied with the disposition of myentertainment dollar, by the end I was delighted.I had worried about how the film was going to measure up without 3Deffects for impact. No worry, Enjoy.Side note: It still is a bit of disappointment to me that the IMDbrating (6.9) does not reflect the quality of this film IMO. Normally Itrust this site to give an accurate assessment of a film. It seems thisparticular film has attracted a lot of unwarranted criticism. Iunderstand that tastes vary and this film won't appeal to many. It isin the "Romancing the Stone"/"Mummy" category. But it doesn't even getcredit for that. This is a well-done movie. I don't understand therancor.

`Prince of Persia' is one of those films that seems like it should be really good, but after viewing it leaves you feeling rather deflated and disappointed. Most elements seem to be there, stunning set pieces, a reasonable story premise (although the plot execution let it down), beautiful costumes, impressive parkour style stunts and big budget effects and yet it gets sorely let down in other areas. The story gets so ridiculous in places that it is a film you need to suspend disbelief to truly enjoy it and the acting is pretty wooden from all involved. This is especially disappointing from Gyllenhaal who has acted well in past films and from Molina who acts like a character from Pirates of the Caribbean, with the most ludicrous accent for a man who lives in the middle east (it's more east end!). Towards the end this turns into a weak Indiana Jones wannabe, with a temple of doom and booby traps, but it can never compete. There is also meant to be a romance between Gyllenhaal and Arterton but rarely have I seen such a lack of chemistry between two actors. These aspects, along with the poor plot execution make this a chore to watch and hard to fully enjoy. It is one of those films you will have been glad to have not wasted money on seeing at the cinema and it is only worth buying if you can pick it up very cheap. You will watch it once and probably never again. Shame, it could have delivered so much more.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

This movie falls into the abyss of most summer movies - excellentadvertising for an at-best mediocre product. Just think, some peoplethought they were disappointed by Terminator Salvation last year atthis time. Prince of Persia makes the stupidity of TS look likeCasablanca by comparison.Prince of Persia offers nothing new in any way, shape or form. It's aconvoluted mess that's caught in no man's land. It takes itself far tooseriously yet offers ridiculous action (ridiculous as in dumb, not asin wild or fun) and even more ridiculous characters. It wants to betaken seriously but functions in bizarre surroundings with a foolishplot. The original Mummy worked because they buried tongue firmly incheek. This movie tries to take two paths but it simply can't stand onits own as a film. Does often joyless, dark and dumb appeal to even thepopcorn crowds? The rest of us want way more in our summer movies. IronMan started the year off right but the Prince here is a giant stepbackward.

I knew it before Disney was gonna ruin pop but anyway i loved the gamevery much so i went to see it anyway.....and i was very disappointed atthe crap they have shown...There's not much to watch here for popfans...i mean this film no way connects us to the prince we know...Itwas better if they didn't make the movie ..They made great movies like Pirates of Caribbean..But i think theydon't have the guts to make POP as original as it can be because withall the blood and violent actions the kids might get scared..Thegraphics,location,costumes were perfect...but there's no soul of themovie. If you are a 5 year old sucking lollipop please go and watch it youwill enjoy...

Did you see Iron Man and Robin Hood? Yes? Well, this film is better, simply because the story is original. I know, I know, it is based onthe computer game...which I used to play ages ago...but the storyportrayed in the script is classic and refreshing at the same time; theperformances are natural and the stunt scenes are unbelievable. Now,what did Iron Man 2 miss and this movie excels at? Plot, and a fastaction pace without being over caffeinated big bang explosions (eversaw G.I. Joe?)Having said that, you must be warned, the dialogues are simple but notstupid and it does contain a fair amount of moral references.Sure everyone is crying out loud about the British accents... "ohh butPersians didn't speak English" yeah but this isn't The Passion of TheChrist, or Apocalypto and Mel Gibson was nowhere near the production,Jake Gyllenhaal is an American, but the rest of the cast is British, makes sense they should all have a similar accent doesn't it?? So quityer whining Overall a good wholesome fun summer movie. worth repeating!

This review is from: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This is a Disney film with all of the special things that Disney does; it provides a nice evening's entertainment for the entire family. The video and audio both are excellent and support the story line with vigor and conviction. If you enjoy the Disney touch you will probably enjoy this one as well.I'm glad to have it in my collection and will watch it again soon.

This is what the movies used to be; an action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously with a handsome leading man and a gorgeous leading lady...a lot of fun.

Having played the video game I was pleasantly surprised at the similarities between the two. The movie is a lot of fun to watch. Keep in mind, it is a Disney flick so if tend to dislike Disney you probably wont like this.

As it was probably with many of you who listened to the movie critics, I was hesitant about watching this movie. But Prince of Persia: Sands of Time just emphasizes the fact that the movie critic elite have lost touch with the general movie going public and wouldn't recognize a truly fun movie if it bit them in the doo, dah, doo dah... This movie isn't supposed to be the next Academy Award winner (ergo: a bunch of neurotic people cry about their troubles) which seems to be the only movies that the critics approve of. This movie is about spectacle, great cinematography, great action and a good plot. It's evident that many of the intelligentsia who reviewed this movie in newspapers and television didn't even see the movie.Basically, this film is a great adventure movie that anyone with half a brain could enjoy...which basically explains why the movie critics didn't like it. lol.If you are looking for an entertaining movie set in a great backdrop with good action and a good plot premise, check this one out. I had a great time watching this one.
