The classic was better

After already hearing about the mixed views given on this film, iwasn't expecting to be blown away. I did however find it fairlyenjoyable. Sure there was a lot of things that annoyed me, theunnecessary love story, the predictable story, Jaden Smith in general.Nonetheless, i still had factors i enjoyed. For example, the Karate scenes (Oh sorry, Kung Fu) were pretty good, and Jackie Chan was a good character to play "Mr.Han", but i expectedthese things already, i mean, it's supposed to be a martial arts movie? It's a pretty good film, even though Jaden can't act which kind ofruined it, but definitely worth watching, especially from a familyperspective.

Great Karate Kid Movie that adds and enhances every element

I recommend this movie most definitely. It was off the hook.It takes Jackie Chan's kung-fu brilliance. It is about time Jackie tookon a role of "Master" in a film. He has a great student, Jaden to takethe role and be the next karate kid.It really took many elements of the old karate kid such as the teacherand student relationship. The jacket on and off versus wax on and off.The mother also played an appropriate role this time around versus theolder films the mom was barely noticed. It seemed more realistic. Thekung fu was accurate on screen and the demonstration of how goodChinese kung fu really is was realistic. Some areas of comedy was very interesting for example the 'evil' kungfu instructor's demeanor, and photo on the wall wearing sunglasses. Some small details like that add to the films comical effect. Not to forget Jaden's demeanor resembling his father Will smith onseveral occasions such as when he walked into Jackie's home withoutrequesting permission. Anybody who knows Jackie Chan and Will Smithmovies will appreciate the film much more. Knowing the original KarateKid movie will also appreciate it more. Not to mention anybody who hashad real interest and training in Martial Arts as self defense wouldnot only find the film exciting to watch for the action sequences, butalso very emotional as Jaden was bullied and attempted to fight back.An overall emotional, thrilling, and happily cheering ending. This filmwas a knock out. The Beijing setting was appropriate, and verypicturesque. I highly recommend anybody who is a fan of Jackie, Will,Jaden, Martial Arts, and Karate Kid to watch this film.Notice how "jacket on, and jacket off" translates into combative kungfu. Many subtle details that adds elements after elements ofentertainment.3 Thumbs Up

A Very Decent Remake!!!

This was a really good remake, and a nice tribute to the classic 1984original. Although the names and location has been changed, it stillhas the same basic plot, and few references to the original. JadenSmith Stars as Dre Parker, a kid who is being forced to move toBeijing. When he develops a crush on Mei Ying, he makes an enemy withCheng. After Dre is abused and humiliated, Mr. Han, the maintenance manof Dre's building decides to help him and teach him the art of kung fu,in order to protect himself. Mr. Han begins to train Dre so he'll beready for a tournament against Cheng and his group. If you love remakesand martial arts, you'll love THE KARATE KID!!!

A decent remake of the story

I was a huge fan of the original Karate Kid and with the magicsurrounding it as the first I had seen such a story, I knew it would bedifficult to top.I was not disappointed. I think Jadan is very talented and super cute. The setting made it interesting and was symbolic since China is goingto be our biggest competitor. My favorite line was 'There is a big difference between being still, and doing nothing'Did anyone else think it was odd that the repairman (Chan) made theenvironmental reference with the shower and hot water? As if China isbig on conservation as a country? It is going to be the worlds biggestpolluter by far!!

Better than the original

This review is from: The Karate Kid (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2010) (Blu-ray) First off I'm 36 so the original is very dear to me...but this version is better!Originally saw this opening day with my son's dojo in attendance. Great for the students.Jackie Chan puts on one of his best performances; especially drama wise...my fav so far I think, and the apple is right next to both trees (I personally think Mrs. Smith is the better thespian, but the kid is great...and he is his own machine).Saw in a dts theater, and since this is a combo pack (real quick on that; blu-ray is the clear winner in how movies will be watched for this new decade. If you don't own a blu-ray player or PS3, ALWAYS BUY THESE PACKS..they are the same price and you get the digital copy; then you have the blu-ray when you get a player...and you will), I watched a few minutes of the DVD just to cover all basesIt makes you wonder if you'll ever be able to watch a DVD again. The blu-ray also has a cooler mix than the theater or the DVD; I don't think I even need to begin to compare quality, both picture and sound (1080p vs. 480p, and dts-HD 5.1 vs. grumply old Dolby 5.1)If you liked the original, or are already considering buying this movie, BUY THIS NOT THE DVD (more bang for the same buck).I think this is like 10 bucks as of this writing, for DVD, digital copy, and of course one great Blu-Ray!

Very Good Remake

It's not often you see a remake that's actually as good as the originalpiece. First time I saw the trailer of the remake I nearly had severedoubts that this film would even coming close to reaching the originalfilm. Boy, was I proved wrong! To start, I was very impressed with thedirector's modern aim in remaking the Kong-fu classic. There were onlyvery few flaws in the film that I caught, such as the kid's mother'sreason why they're moving to another country or the karate instructor'sanger from a past he caused. Overall, the film was quite entertainingwith the camera movements and James Horner's epic musical score. Inaddition, the training scenes throughout the film impressed me morewith whole new combat styles and training equipment used to teach thenew kid karate. As for the cast: Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan definitelysurprised with me character chemistry and development. Though there-done elements in the story seems very obvious to spot from theoriginal film, it still brings a surprising outlook to the modern film.I hope this remake will be a sign(s) to director, Herald Zwart, that heshould make more movies about kids growth and, perhaps, self-confidentissues to people of all ages (suggestions, of course). Finally, myscore to this movie. I almost want to give it an 8, but I fear that Iwould give way more appreciation than I already have, so I decided togive it a 7, due to the director's appreciated vision of the '84classic with direct and entertaining story development about a kid andKong-fu. This movie was fantastic and I can honestly say that this willbe a part of my movie collection for years to come.

Silly...was this supposed to be a slapstick comedy??

First of all I grew up with the original Karate Kid trilogy...absolute80's classic. The reviews from IMDb'ers, professional reviewers andeven my friends that compare this to the original and even talk abouthow they paid 'homage' to the original is ALMOST as funny as thisentire movie and that's really funny!! There is such little in commonbesides the very loose plot similarities. This would have been muchbetter in my opinion had they kept the original title idea of "The KungFu Kid" and called it loosely inspired by The Karate Kid. There islittle to no Karate and the "Kung Fu" in the film is so silly andoutrageous its incomprehensible that this little kid who trains forwhat feels like an hour can spin, and flip, and jump to inhumanheights. Also to top it off when Ralph Macchio portrayed 'teenage'Daniel Larusso in The original classic he was 24 and far morebelievable in his talent than a 12 year old who is actually 12 and justlooks very young. That means his nemesis are also twelve making thescene where Jackie Chan is attacked by a group of little boys and thusbeats them all up absolutely ridiculously laughable. I think I wouldwatch this film again just to watch him beat up little kids. The aforementioned Jackie Chan is actually one of the better featuresof the film. He actually gives a solid and serious performance as thewise Kung Fu teacher. He doesn't even touch Pat Morita's pop cultureicon Mr. Miyagi but considering the laughable moments in the film heactually manages a good role. Jaden Smith really tries to break out onhis own in this picture. He does an okay job, his acting isn't theissue. He's given some rather silly script and plot to deal with butyou can definitely see his chemistry and you can see his Dad's talentin him for big screen blockbusters but I just don't know if this willever do it for him despite the money it made. Him and Chan just don'thave the chemistry required. If so many people are going to try tocompare this film to 'the original' then they don't even have afraction of the chemistry they need. If there is a stand outperformance in the film it would be that of newcomer Wenwen Han whoplays the young adorable romantic interest for Smith. She is sweet, andcute and just has really good chemistry with Smith. I hope she returnsfor the sequel and he doesn't change up love interests like the oldKarate Kid films. Taraji P. Henson plays Smith's Mom and unfortunatelyshe is overly used. Her character is played like a stereotypical blacklady from the streets and its annoying more than anything. Also anewcomer Zhenwei Wang unfortunately is too young for the performance. He looks like a tweener throwing a temper tantrum who happens to beable to throw spin kicks and other ridiculous things.Director Harald Zwart comes from commercials and music videos and seemsto have trouble telling a story that isn't 2-5 minutes long. He ruinedwhat was a classic remake in The Pink Panther 2 by turning it intocrude and stupid humor instead of fun stupid humor. Now we see him takewhat is meant to be an inspiring and underdog type story into a silly, slapstick, joke for little kids instead of teens and adults like it wasmeant to be. Do I sound bitter? Well they shouldn't compare this to astone cold 80's classic that made me take Karate numerous times and hadme watching all three a hundred times. This is definitely for a newgeneration and a much younger crowd. For me it was a definite just okayand reminiscent of nothing when it comes to the original. I will seethe sequel in hopes that a couple years makes this a more realistic andless humorous film. 6/10

The Karate Kid

Not a Bad Remake

To me, the first "Karate Kid" movie is "Mr. Miyagi and his Apprentice." The story of the 1984 hit movie is predictable and Ralph Macchio and his karate fight scenes look disappointingly amateurish, but Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita, Oscar-nominated as a wise karate teacher, is fun throughout, and the master-pupil relation between Miyagi sensei and Macchio's young hero Daniel is convincing and touching. Now after three not-so-great sequels (including one starring then unknown Hilary Swank), a remake arrives with Jaden Smith as Dre Parker, a new kid in a Beijing school, and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, a quiet maintenance man who teaches martial arts to the bullied boy. Probably the new "Karate Kid" movie should be called "The Kung-fu Kid" as karate is hardly mentioned in the film, but this is not really a big problem. Beautifully shot in China and professionally choreographed, the remade "Karate Kid" is overall enjoyable, but is deeply flawed and weak in many regards.Though the friendship between the two main characters Dre and Mr. Han is credible, and Jackie Chan's acting itself is very good, Chan's Mr. Han lacks a sense of humor that lends depth to the character of Miyagi. One subplot about Dre's love story, devoid of chemistry, only slows down the pace of the 140 minute film, which is too long by 40 minutes. Occasional attempt at humor are weak at best, but if you have seen any of director Harald Zwart's unimpressive works in the past ("Agent Cody Banks" "The Pink Panther 2"), you will not be surprised at that. The martial art tournament sequence is acceptable, though wires and stunts are obviously used. Jackie Chan also gives one amusing fight scene against the bullying boys, almost stealing the film from Jaden Smith. This is not a bad remake. Only that it needs a new title and a tighter story.

Great Entertainment

This review is from: The Karate Kid (DVD) I ordered The Karate Kid DVD and I am very pleased with the product I received. I loved the movie and the DVD is an excellent version of the original at the movies. I would recommend to kids and adults.

turgid remake of a once modest film

Two questions arise while watching the 2010 version of "The KarateKid": #1) Why is anyone remaking a film that is only twenty-six yearsold, that has been readily available on video for decades, and that hasno special effects that might be improved by contemporary CGItechnology? And #2) Why is any version of "The Karate Kid" allowed torun for 140 minutes?! I've seen toga-wrapped historical epics thatdidn't take this long to tell their stories.Though the setting has been moved from the San Fernando Valley toBeijing, it's still the same old hooey about the puny, put-uponnewcomer who receives lessons in self-defense, discipline and life froman inscrutable maintenance man who just happens to be a kung fu master.I guess the Chinese setting is supposed to work to legitimize thetwo-bit philosophizing that pours forth in endless fashion from thisunpolished Henry Higgins, but it also makes this simple tale much morepretentious in the long run - Dre's photogenically performing hismartial arts moves on the top of the Great Wall of China being theprime example of that.Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and co-star of "The Pursuit ofHappiness," plays the twelve-year-old who moves from Detroit to Chinawith his mother shortly after the death of his father. Indeed, theyoung Smith is probably the only decent thing in the movie. He managesto be both lively and likable without coming across as cutesy andcloying. After Dre immediately falls victim to the local bullies, heseeks help from Mr. Han, the handyman in the apartment where he lives. There's really no point in reiterating any more of the plot, sinceeveryone knows it already, because, even if you haven't seen the actualoriginal, you surely know it by instinct. As the wise but taciturn Mr. Han, Jackie Chan brings nowhere near thehumor or charm to the role that the scene-stealing Pat Morita did whenit was known as Mr. Miyagi. It's true that the scenery here is a little more impressive than whatone finds in Reseda, but that's not enough to justify the time andmoney spent on this musty, overlong and wholly unnecessary remake.

Overall pretty good, however there were some flaws..

This movie was overall pretty good, it had some nice acting (Yes,Jadenwas good, keep in mind he's really young and inexperienced).. I won't get into details of how good or bad it is in order to try andmanipulate you like most do, all I'll say is go see it for yourself.. There was a thing that bothered me really and that was : Thesimilarities to Undisputed III and stunts/moves that belong and havebeen seen by Scott Adkins in most of his movies and NOT JC.. Anyway, after seeing that movie I just had to register and get it off mychest, it's really annoying seeing Scott Adkins being under the radarand his stunts being used in big movies.. See both and you'll understand what I'm talking about..

Daughter loved the movie--from what she could see of it!

This review is from: The Karate Kid (DVD) Gave this DVD to my daughter for Christmas with great anticipation. Jaden Smith is an excellent actor and the movie contains a powerful message on the topic of bullying. While the story itself was entertaining, the fact that the DVD messed up at the end was not. The replacement DVD still had a few kinks (pixelated scenes), but I was pleased at how quickly I received it. I am keeping the replacement DVD and will continue to shop Amazon. I have ordered dozens (maybe hundreds) of items and this is the first glitch!

Great Movie!!!

I went into this movie not really knowing what to expect but with apositive attitude because the previews looked quite good. I went withmy thirteen year old nephew and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!Jaden Smith's acting was really good and he's is certainly going to bean excellent actor with a few more movies under his belt. The actualkung fu was believable and the story line was believable. Frombeginning to end, the audience in the movie theater, including myselfand my nephew cheered and clapped at various parts of the movie. I wasa fan of the original Karate Kid when I was growing up, and this moviehas added an new spin to the original which is certainly welcomed. Itwas well cast and entertaining. I recommend this movie strongly foradults and kids alike

25 April 2012

Predictable, but that's not what made the movie good

I dodged this movie when it came out in the theater and when it first released on DVD. Every time I saw the previews, I kept thinking, "This is going to be the same plot I've seen on the other versions." Even when I read the summary of the film, I kept thinking, "This is the same film just with a young, black actor." However, my mother kept gushing over the film and telling me how good it was, even though she knows I don't get into action films that don't have race cars. Finally I gave in and watched it. Was I right about it being predictable? Absolutely. Did I know the end at the very beginning? From the bottom to the top. However, what I didn't know was how much swagger Jaden Smith has. I remember him being cute in "Pursuit of Happyness," but I wasn't prepared for his dance skills, his very convincing flirtatious nature with his "like" interest Wenwen Han (who plays Meiying), the look on his face when he was fighting Zhenwei Wang (who plays Cheng) or his comedic timing. If not for Jaden Smith having those extras, this would've been one boring film. Cheng and his crew had a butt whooping due to them long ago, but the teacher was so out of hand I could understand why they were so aggressive. And by the way, Zhenwei Wang did an EXCELLENT job of being the villain. He was way too good at that role. I wonder if he's nice in real life because the look in his eyes made me wonder was he more serious than acting, which is a great thing for any actress. Great film. I definitely wasn't in suspense, but I was amused the entire time.

haterofcrap 24 April 2012

Karate crap

This movie was awful from beginning to end.The performances were lame, specially the one by the son of Will Smith. The character of Jackie Chan was lame and uninspired. The original film was crap too (Just like other 80's overrated crap, such as Rambo, Robocop or Conan the Barbarian) but this was much, muchworse.I mean, this film is not even about karate, as the first boring film, but about Kung Fu. Why they didn't call this "The Kung Fu kid" The premise of this is just so stupid...I hate this movie, even morethan the original Karate Kid. This sucks hard.

The Karate Kid Re-Kindled

Set in the beautiful and raw backdrop of Beijing and rural China, thiswonderful coming-of-age film explores issues of family, friends andself-pride. The story begins with a widower (Taraji P. Henson) and herson, Dre (Jaden Smith), relocating to China for a new job. Dre,predisposed to dislike his new home, quickly finds himself atadolescent war with some of the local children who, unfortunately forDre, are skilled students of kung fu. Life becomes increasinglyconcerning for Dre until the maintenance man of his apartment building,Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), reluctantly agrees to teach him kung fu.The performances in this film range from solid to strong. Jaden Smithleads the cast well but the real stand out is Jackie Chan, who producesthe performance of his career as the troubled and mysterious Mr. Han.The cinematography is wonderful but what really makes this film work isthat nothing is artificial. No character or location isover-beautified, everything is natural. The story is also laced withimportant messages about right and wrong which will not be missed onchildren. No doubt, those fans belonging to the original "Karate Kid" franchisewill find reasons to be dissatisfied. Many complaints have been madeabout the title itself, as it is kung fu, not karate that is taught (anissue that is acceptably addressed and dealt with in the film). Butthis film should not be and is not meant to be compared to any other,it stands strong on its own.A film well worth seeing and will be thoroughly enjoyed by all thoseover the age of ten.

24 April 2012

Just O.K!

First of all don't go into this movie expecting it to be exactly like the original "Karate Kid" because it's not. With that said, I think Jaden Smith did a pretty good job. Firstly, I don't like the fact that this movie is set in China. Secondly, I think Jackie Chan's performance was below his talent. Third, this movie was over 2 hours, and that was way longer than it had to be. Certain parts just dragged it out longer than it had to be in my opinion. Fourth, the jacket on/jacket off metaphor for was kinda lame. Then again, so was wax on/wax off, but ultimately when it came together it worked. I do like the fact that Jaden Smith actually got a chance to kick some butt in this movie seeing as how any real "Karate Kid" fan remembers that Daniel LaRusso got his butt kicked the whole movie. Including, the tournament, and in the end he does some kinda kick winning the whole thing. At any rate, I do think that Jaden Smith should keep acting because he does have a talent for it braids and all.

23 April 2012

Jadon makes it.

This review is from: The Karate Kid (DVD) I bought "The Karate Kid" not because of the story but because of the acting of young Jaden. The story was so much like the original movie which is not why I purchased the DVD. I think young Jaden Smith did a terrific job of acting which makes it a must have movie for me. He has a bright future ahead of him if he continues with acting.
