Another DC Comics hero gets a workout in Jonah Hex, the movie incarnation of DCs scar-faced bounty hunter, played here by Josh Brolin. Out to exact revenge on the varmint who wrecked his face and killed his family, Jonah also gets yanked back into the service of his country--against his will, of course. Said varmint, Quentin Turnbull, is played by John Malkovich, although the more spirited villainy is provided by Turnbulls tattooed Irish assistant (Inglourious Basterdss Michael Fassbender plays the part with the kind of energy noticeably absent from the other cast members). In this 80-minute hodgepodge of a movie, Jonah regularly checks in with his lady friend, a prostitute (Megan Fox) whose bordello room has a remarkable amount of glamour lighting, and in his spare time investigates Turnbulls plot to use a super weapon against Washington, D.C. By giving Jonah a halfway-interesting supernatural talent--he can talk with the dead, by placing his hands on them--the film adds a kicky new wrinkle, but its not enough to improve the mangled storytelling or the sleepwalking pace. Brolins makeup is impressive, but in scarring his cheek and pulling his mouth back in a grotesque grimace, the prosthetics designers have robbed the actor of any ability to express himself through speech. Kind of a miscalculation there, and typical of this movies tendency to shoot itself in the face. DVD and First HD 720p PC, Mac, PS3 and XBOX 360 COMPATIBLE

It's not Wild Wild West, but it was still awful.

Jonah Hex(Josh Brolin) a scarred bounty hunter, who is real good withhis guns, and capturing his targets. But his other joy is Lilah(MeganFox) a hooker with a strong mind and a heart of gold. Jonah wants tohave a life with her, but fears she may not live through it. But Jonahsoon gets the offer of a lifetime, when he is asked to stop a madmannamed Quentin Turnbull(John Malkovich). Turnbull killed Jonahs family, and scarred him. Will Jonah have his revenge? Some effects and some shoot out scenes were amusing, but thats it. Thefilm never really takes off like it should. Josh Brolin isuninteresting as Jonah Hex, you're just unsure to root for him, henever really grabs your interest like he did in W(2008), not to mentionhe and Megan Fox don't have any chemistry. John Malovich is alsouninteresting as the main villain, he looks so bored half the time. Andthe western setting looks so fake. The cast here can do so much better.

Jonah Hex BLOWS

Hands down worst movie ever made.... The acting looked like somethingout of a first grade play and the props appeared to be very cheap.Nothing was explained whatsoever by the childish dialogue and thereseemed to be myriad holes in the superficial plot which failed toexplain even the simplest questions that a viewer may have. Jonah'spower was never explained nor were the roles of the Indians in themovie nor was the surface even scratched about how the weapon workedwhich just made the movie seem surreal and almost comical becausethings just seemed to happen without reason but just merely because itseemed convenient for the writers. If this movie was a comedy and MeganFox talked less and got naked more perhaps it would deserve more thanone star.

Jonah Hex is not a good movie, but it's a great cautionary tale about what happens when a film loses its way.

Hero movies' hall of shame

Many guys want to see some of the quite good superhero movie and manyfilms are very fit as their choices. However, as my opinion, Jonah Hexis not.I think Jonah Hex is one of the superhero movies' "fault". Josh Bolin'scharacter looked too weak. He should have been better than I sawbecause Hex is "hero". (Maybe it's due to he actually the hero with nosupernatural power like Batman) If you saw "Darkman", you could see howLiam Neeson's Darkman showed his furiously revenge against his nemesis. However, Jimmy Hayward (director), Mark Neveldine(screenplay), andBrian Taylor (screenplay) join together to "destroy" Jonah Hex'scharacter. He looked like the "old" man with no power. Most of the film's plot is heavily changed from its original. I thinkthat the crew maybe have to do it because they try not to show JonahHex "Begins", but "The Action". For the cast, Michael Fassbander showedhimself as one of my opinion's "the most heinous villain". He portrayedBurke as the annoying guy who everyone wish him "go to hell". For JohnMalkovich, he still the professional main villain with the satisfyingtermination. Nevertheless, for about Josh Bolin, I am very sad with hisperformance. Finally, I think Jonah Hex maybe have the fantastic fantasy scene, theOK plot and the great villain, yet it's not the pleasing superheromovies. Hey Viewer! Carefully before you decide to watch Jonah Hex.

OK Movie

Good story, but the movie was choppy at times, did not have a nice even flow of events. Visuals were very good. Not a waste of time, but I won't buy the DVD when it comes out.

Jonah Hex - What did they do to you !!!

In the early 70s, having read my share of Kid Colt and the Rawhide Kid, Jonah Hex featuring in Weird Western Tales for the first time was an amazing character ! The screenplay for the Comics showed some really caustic but witty back and forth between Jonah and the numerous devious devils he slayed. His dog getting shot and dyeing after freeing him from the Confeds local army still rings an emotional chord when i reminesce. Regrettably, Jonah Hex the movie has not been able to capture any of such moments and has remained a poor revenge story with the character Jonah not being threshed out at all. I still love the Comic Character and wish could say the same for the movie...alas

Save your money

Save your money. If you must see it because you love the trailer, rent it, at least you will not be disappointed by the money you spent going to the theater. I am a big fan of these types of movies and I am telling you, the critics are being way too nice. If I could give it a zero I would. This movie was absolutely horrible.

A digest version of a feature film

When the film ended and the credits began, I looked in disbelief at thetimer. 72 minutes ???? Who makes a live action big budget film that isonly 72 minutes long? I haven't seen such a short flick since 1963'sDAY OF THE TRIFFIDS.Admittedly the film is not padded. While the filmmakers could have comeup with something, anything to give the film some bulk, the scenes thatare there all briskly move the action along. The deleted scenes on theDVD would have added nothing to the film aside from a few extraminutes. The film seems a "Western Noir" version of 1999's WILD WILD WEST. Theplots are similar-- a special government agent with ties to the CivilWar is sent by President Grant to seek out a renegade ex-Confederateofficer who now possesses a super-weapon that he'll use to kill Grantand conquer the US. And the hero is aided by a heroine who appears tobe a "soiled dove" but whom can handle herself in a fight. At leastJONAH HEX does a better job at explaining the title character'sbackground. The main difference the tone of this film. Where WILD WILD WEST was anaction comedy, this is a very dark film. Jonah Hex is not a jokesterand the few light comments he makes are in character and still verydark. The acting is negligible. Megan Fox continues to show she looks greatbut can't act her way out of a paper bag. Malkovich is pretty muchphoning in his performance as a generic terrorist leader. Fassbinderchews the scenery as his psychopathic Irish assassin. Lance Reddick(from FRINGE) plays a Noble Black Man. But Josh Brolin does a very goodjob with his title role. He plays Jonah Hex with a weariness anddedication that befits this character. He may seem to be underplayinghere but in fact he's struck just the right tone. The geographical sense of the film is pretty bizarre. Folks seem ableto ride their horses fairly swiftly between points like the West, NewOrleans, and Washington DC. Somewhow the villains are able to transportswiftly and unseen a multi-barreled cannon the size of an M1 Abramstank. And Washington DC is now apparently on the southern shore of abay.

I managed to avoid losing interest but it was nothing special

Confederate General Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich) blames CavalrymanJonah Hex (Josh Brolin) for the death of son so he murders Hex's familyand brands his face then leaves him to die. He is brought back to lifeby the mystical magical medicinal powers of his Native Americanin-laws. Hex is denied his vengeance on Turnbull by reports ofTurnbull's death in a fire so he turns his hand to bounty hunting andspending time in a whorehouse with Lilah (Megan Fox).It turns out that Turnbull is not dead but is planning terroristattacks against the United States on its centenary celebrations using anewly designed super-weapon. The President hires Hex to chase downTurnbull to stop him. Because Hex was near death himself he now has thepower to touch the dead and talk to them. He uses this to interrogate acouple of corpses and find out Turnbull's location. It all builds to aclimax of the hero battling the villain as the 19th Century steampunksuper-weapon counts down to its attack at the heart of United StatesGovernment.Josh Brolin was pretty good as Jonah Hex, but his effort seemed a bitwasted in film that had him playing against Megan Fox. Malcovich playedthe villain as well as he usually does when he phones it in for a dodgystory. His evil plan is like something from a James Bond storytransplanted to the 19th Century and the climax really has more thanpassing resemblance the climax of those films such as the presence ofSmith (Lance Reddick) a version of the Bond film's Q character and thescene of the penultimate battle with henchman Burke (MichaelFassbender). Hex's supernatural power seemed a bit tacked on andunderused but I am completely unfamiliar with the comic book source ofthis film. I thought that this film was a watchable piece of nonsensebut at times it really seemed a bit rushed and I wonder how much thenarration was used to hide cuts.Rating 6/10

The movie began life as a macabre postbellum western for DC Comics. Now it's lumbering action-camp following a video game plot.

Loved it!

This review is from: Jonah Hex [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Hey, I don't know what the critics are looking for, but I was thoroughly entertained by this movie. The action was great, the special effects outstanding, and Brolin's portrayal was spot on! Malkovich was his usual outstanding self. It was like watching an early spaghetti western, but with better special effects and totally updated. It's one of those movies I'll pop on in a flash when I want to kick back and be entertained. Once again, the reviewers are looking for some other ethereal BS, instead of just "was it entertaining?". Forget "real" .... it's called "FUN"!

Emanuel Levy 06 May 2012

The gifted Josh Brolin is totally wasted in this misguided, messy, disjointed and tedious action-adventure-western

David Germain 05 May 2012

So short, and so bad, you cringe at the thought of how awful whatever ended up on the cutting-room floor must be.

Jonah character Hexed by Hollywood

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible, The only redeeming factor is Megan Fox in a corset... and thats not even a great reason to watch this movie.Unfortunately Hollywood got this one way wrong. Not as good as Wild Wild West, and thats not saying much since WWW was a one star movie as well. Watch at your own risk, you will not be able to get your 2 hrs back.

Nigel Andrews 02 May 2012

Scarcely even feature length, and bewilderingly chaotic.

James Verniere 01 May 2012

It's the latest in a long, stinking line of graphic-novels adapted to the screen in the wake of the huge, surprise success of Zack Snyder's far superior 2006 effort "300."

Michael O'Sullivan 30 April 2012

Jonah Hex may not be the longest 81 minutes you ever spend, but it might well be the most tedious.

A Truly Awful Movie

This review is from: Jonah Hex (Amazon Instant Video) This movie had alot of potential - an excellent cast, some excellent themes, and an original story, albeit a comic book movie. Think of this as a Western-version of Batman. That's all there is to it. Jonah is a former Confederate Soldier whose family is brutally murdered by his former commander who blames him for the death of his son and Jonah's best friend. In a very The Crow meets Spawn meets The Lone Ranger mstory line, Jonah is saved by Indians who give him, get this, MYSTICAL POWERS!!!! Sounds amazing? It's not. In fact, my capitalization is more compelling than the actual movie.Let's see, Jonah's Mystical Powers are (1) he can regenerate from being injured, (2) he can touch dead people and bring them back to life, (3) he can use his bird vision to see through the eyes of a raven and (4) he can force you to not want to watch the movie. Its almost as if Josh Brolin speaks to us beyond the third wall, begging us to watch one of his better movies. Oh and Megan Fox gets thrown in for Boobs, but not much else.So anyway, Jonah is recruited by the President of the United States to find out what his former commander is up to - some dastardly awesome weapon of mass destruction, before it can be used against Washington DC. I swear, they ripped most of the story off from Wild Wild West. Yada yada yada, Jonah prevents the destruction of Washington DC, saving the American way of life while conveniently and painfully paving the way for sequels...I found many aspects of the story intriguing, but it did not hold on to the intrigue. If you were unlucky enough to recieve this as a gift, I would suggest burying it in the backyard if you can't exchange it or sell it. Regift it.This movie is not worth seeing. Wait for it to hit cable. Or don't.

A deplorable and vomiting experience

My first encounter with Jonah Hex came in the precise moment (late90's) when I started to find out that the comics could go much furtherthan the typical superheroes which had initially captured my interestin that art.And even though I have never been an obsessive fan of thatcharacter, I enjoyed the black humor and bizarre tone from themini-series Two-Gun Mojo and Riders of the Worm and Such.Because ofthat, I had the hope that the very negative reviews received by thefilm Jonah Hex were due to the fact that the people had misunderstoodthe character, because he had never been really a hero, but a parody ofthe anti-heroes who are famous in the classic westerns.Needless to sayI was wrong...Jonah Hex ended up being an atrocious experience whichdid not work as an action movie, as a comic adaptation nor as awestern. The only thing I did not hate in Jonah Hex is Josh Brolin's solidperformance in the leading role; pity that he is caught in such a badmovie. The rest of the actors do whatever they can with their poorlywritten characters; someone who is authentically wasted is JohnMalkovich as the boring and lacking of any personality villain.Thescreenplay from Jonah Hex is nothing more than an incongruent mess ofconfusing situations, badly written characters and the most rancidclichés from the western genre.Ugh...and did I mention the music fromMarco Beltrami and the group Mastodon? That would have been aninteresting combination in any other case, but I found it to beabsolutely inappropriate to accompany a tedious story about cowboys,American pseudo-History and witchcraft. With the exception of Brolin's performance, I do not find anythingpositive to say about this movie.Besides of all the previouslymentioned defects, the action scenes are very badly filmed and edited, something which is exacerbated by the irregular cinematography.Insummary, Jonah Hex is a deplorable and vomiting film which, in myhumble opinion, is among the worst films I have seen in 2010.
