The world is divided into four kingdoms, each represented by the element they harness, and peace has lasted throughout the realms of Water, Air, Earth, and Fire under the supervision of the Avatar, a link to the spirit world and the only being capable of mastering the use of all four elements. When young Avatar Aang disappears, the Fire Nation launches an attack to eradicate all members of the Air Nomads to prevent interference in their future plans for world domination. 100 years pass and current Fire Lord Ozai continues to conquer and imprison anyone with elemental bending abilities in the Earth and Water Kingdoms, while siblings Katara and Sokka from a Southern Water Tribe find a mysterious boy trapped beneath the ice outside their village. Upon rescuing him, he reveals himself to be Aang, Avatar and last of the Air Nomads. Swearing to protect the Avatar, Katara and Sokka journey with him to the Northern Water Kingdom in his quest to master Waterbending and eventually fulfill his destiny of once again restoring peace to the world. I am embarrassed to admit that I almost passed on this film, entirelyas a result of its widespread persecution. After viewing all 103minutes last night, I am confident that most film critics as well asthe general public, have extreme difficulties thinking for themselves. The Last Airbender was a huge success. It is obvious that the visualscarried the film, but what the creative team painted for us was nothingless than spectacular. From the brilliant costumes to the magnificentice kingdom, my eyes would not leave the screen. Noah Ringer was atreat to watch, and his character was easy to root for. The actionscenes were exciting, but more importantly unique. The variety in thesupporting cast kept me entertained from one scene to the next, andcreated excellent set up for their roles in the sequels. Even the scorewas highly captivating. This complimented the narration of a veryenjoyable storyline. The greatest flaw was of course the dialogue. This caused some of thecharacters to suffer immensely. At one point, I actually questionedJackson Rathbone's existence in the film. If you are unable to identifywith the characters, it is easy to become disengaged. In the context of a children's cartoon series film adaptation, themovie prevails. It delivers on multiple levels, and falls short on afew. This hardly constitutes failure. It is unfortunate that Hollywoodhas created a scapegoat in Shyamalan, yet amusing that the public hasso blindly bought into it.

It was a very lazy attempt of making an amazing cartoon series intomovie. None of the characters matched their personalities from thecartoon series and they left out a lot of characters that helped makeAang who he will become. The bending lacked urgency. It was moremovement with the body to force the elements move for you instead ofthe elements being an extension of your soul so they move with you.Really disappointed about the lack of ethnicity in the movie. None ofthe main characters had the slightest hint of Asian or American Indianin them. As a whole only about ten percent of the movie was completelycorrect. I just hope the next two are better, very sad that this movieturned out the way it did.

OK i had such high hopes for this movie so i overlooked the fact thatpronounced everyones name weird all the Indian actors had differentaccents and that the only good actor was the guy who play iroh but nomatter how much i wanted this movie to be good...it was just a totalletdown in everyway possible im truly sorry for anyone who sees thismovie and trust me im a huge fan of the show but this is nothing likethe show but don't take my word for it if you feel the urge to spendyour hard earned money on this piece of garbage than by all means goahead just prepare for the worst franchise killer since the batsuitsnips :-)

if you liked the show don't even bother watching this movie. it will just make you mad! they pronounced half the things in the movie wrong, the director watched the cartoon series, he knew how things were supposed to be said, but he did it wrong anyway. the storyline, and even the abilities of the benders is all wrong too! it took them forever to do any kind of bending with the movements,it was just sad. there was NO redeeming quality about this movie. as soon as i saw that m. night shamala..whatever had anything to do with this movie i knew it would be bad. but actually seeing the movie just made me angry. it had so much potential to be good, but the casting was bad, the acting was bad, the writing was bad. everything was very bad! so if you are curious about the premise and story, just watch the cartoon, it'll take longer, but you'll enjoy it a lot more, and you'll actually get the correct storyline. let's pray that he doesn't make anymore of these.

After becoming a fan of the television series I was very excited to see the live-action adaptation. As one can see from most other reviews, this was a horrible attempt to bring a great television series to the theaters. How the creators of the television show could agree to this mangling is a wonder. I understand that not everything from the show could make it into the film, but why change 90% of the storyline and key elements. The show was widely popular among numerous age groups for a reason. A good rule to follow: If it isn't broken don't fix it! The show developed the characters so that you felt a real attachment to them and their situation. The movie completely failed to do this. The movie lacked all the humor and fun of the show while destroying the beauty of the bending arts. Yes they had some good special effects, but what major budget films don't these days. And I'm sorry to say that good special effects don't make up for a poorly written script. The bad script and acting overshadowed any enjoyment I got from the film. Even if you haven't seen the show I believe that you will find the movie to contain a lazy, mashed together storyline that lacks flow. It appears to me that M. Night made one really good film and then lost the ability to write and direct anything else. It doesn't take a film student or some critic to tell that this movie was an abomination. I recommend that if you are interested in seeing this movie...don't! Or at the very least rent it, don't buy it.

I am truly horrified at what has happened to one of my favorite TVshows. I had no idea what to expect so I went in hoping it would begood on some degree and sadly even then I was let down. All Avatar fans know the story. In a world where there are four nationsthere are also people who can control the elements. Fire, Earth, Water, and Air are the names of the nations and are the elements. Everygeneration there is a special person born called the Avatar who has thepower to control all elements and uses this power to keep the worldsafe and in balance. When the Fire Nation wages war the Avatardisappears. A hundred years later a brother and sister Sokka and Kataraof the Southern Water Tribe find a boy in an iceberg and they learn heis the next Avatar and the last of the Airbenders. So they decide totravel the world and teach Aang the elements so he can fulfill hisdestiny and save the world. While the series is greatly entertaining the film completely destroyswhat the show was. The dialog to start with is silly. These people talklike complete idiots throughout the film not even sounding like theythought about what they were going to say.Another thing that bothered me was that the story is different morethan it should be. Key plot points are left out and all that does isupset true fans of the series and confuse those who haven't even seenit. Most of the time the children would just talk about getting Aang to theNorth Pole so he can train, they do absolutely nothing else. Theyaren't funny or charming they just work at trying to teach Aang theelements. Then there is Zuko and please don't get me started with that.In the series he's fierce and a cunning warrior. While in this film hesometimes makes his sister Azula seem more sane than he is. Not tomention he's not intimidating in the least amount. Which if someonewould guess from the series the person playing Zuko would at least lookintimidating in the film he looks like an awkward teenager thriving forhis father's attention. What also got me upset is that they wouldn't even do something assimple as pronouncing the names of some of the characters right. Whenthey would say Aang it would sound like Oong and when they say Iroh itwould sound like Eroh. But it does show me that maybe the cast isn'tentirely to blame for how awful this film was. M. Night after all didwrite the script even though I see no reason why he had to make as manychanges as he did. With other adaptations there usually isn't enough source material tomake a decent film like they would want so filmmakers would have tomake some stuff up. But the Avatar series is just filled with plenty ofinformation and has everything anyone could possibly need to make agood film from it. However M. Night decides to ignore this fact andchange the story for no good reason. Because of this he would probablyget more hate mails from fans of the show than money (as I am sure thatis what he is hoping for).If the children can act its hard to tell through M. Night's mediocrewriting. I was hoping that with as much information he had he mighthave been able to make a pretty decent film but he decides to throw itall away and create a film meant to get fans of the show angry.Whatever the case may be I understand that things are different in amovie than the source it came from. I can deal with certain things butwhen the actors can't even pronounce Avatar right because of M. Night'sscript you know there is a problem. This film could have been very good but it was just badly done. Thespecial effects were great but if only the cast was thought over, thenthe script redone to be a little more faithful to the story, also maybeadding in an extra hour or so to get in all of the important detailswhile also focusing on characterization would have probably been a goodidea, and maybe not have a director and writer who's career has beengoing down the drain for the past decade the film could have beengreat. But sadly it seems we'll all need some serious Avatar the TVseries therapy to get this film out of our heads. Please I implore you do not see this movie. Do not encourage a sequelespecially one made by M. Night. Because of this I can not even look atone of my favorite Avatar episodes. If you are a fan of Avatar and likegood movies then do not see this movie that is more like a bunch ofclips put together to make one big mistake.I give this film a very generous 2/10 stars. The reason is that my lovefor Avatar prevents me from giving it one star or less. So if you seethis montage of horror watch it at your own risk.

Before seeing this movie on Friday, I must've read at least a hundredIMDb reviews. Sadly, by the time I was sitting in the theater waitingfor the movie to start, I wasn't expecting to be the least bitimpressed. Every movie M. Night has made after 'The Sixth Sense' haspretty much sucked, and every review seemed to unanimously agree thatthis movie tanked, so I was preparing for the worst. But my verdict? It rocked. I went to see it with another friend who's a big fan of Avatar, and mybrother who has never once seen the show. All three of us LOVED it.During every fight scene, every hair-raising martial art move, we allleaned forward in our seats and muttered "awesome". The martial artswere great. The CGI was great. The settings were FANTASTIC. The acting?Well... kid actors can be expected to be mediocre, but they weren'tterrible. It reminded me of the first Harry Potter movie--young kidactors who are just getting used to their roles. I've heard a lot of whining about the pace of the movie. This whiningis from disgruntled Airbender fans who expected to see an 8-hour live-action mimic of the cartoon series. OBVIOUSLY stuffing 20 episodes intoan hour and 43 minute movie is going to leave some things out youdopes, yet I was still pleasantly surprised to see as much as I did!All in all, this movie copied the show very, very well. I'm frustratedthe review counter only has this movie at about 5 stars. It deservesmuch higher. I have become a renewed fan of M. Night Shyamalan. So as my brother (who is now an Airbender fan) mentioned as we left themovie, I can't wait for the second one.

Well, I didn't go in expecting much, having read several reviews.. andwell just plain all around distaste for anything shamalamadingdong. Itried to keep an open mind and began watching it.I could ignore the beginning where Kitara is reading and says ah-va-tarabout 3 times, and I could ignore the slightly inaccurate story flow (Iknow it can't be exactly like the show.) The exact point where theylost me: ONG (yes ONG) that's how Kitara says Ang's name.It was totally ridiculous, and the acting was pure cardboard. If notfor the eye candy that is Jackson Rathbone, and the fact that I hadNOTHING else to do, I wouldn't have sat through the rest of the moviefrom that exact moment. The End.

The Last Airbender should be considered M. Night Shyamalan's LAST FILM.The adaption desecrated the original series. I knew the film wasn'tgonna be spectacular based on a number of negative reviews butShyamalan took the term "Mediocre" to a whole new level. The original series was embraced by a lot of fans (including me) andShyamalan simply turned it into a nightmare for every fan. It washorrible ; plain and simple. The acting lacked substance. The cast werelike a bunch of lifeless puppets acting while void of emotions. Thespecial effects weren't anything special as well.If you wanna enjoy seeing your favorite characters come alive and amazeyou with sophisticated bending complete with amazing special effectsthen this is not the movie for you. I suggest you just buy the DVD ofthe animation. "The failure which is The Last Airbender is an insult toevery fan of the original animation."

OK, 1st, lets not change the name we pronounce the main characters!!Spider man didn't get changed to Spidur mon, did he? Second, the actingsuck!!! we didn't have the comedy relief that Sakko brought to thetable, we didn't have the playfull characteristics from Aang at all. Wenever connected to the characters like in the cartoon version atall...all the drama and emotion was sucked out this movie, NOCONNECTION WAS MADE MR.KNIGHT!!! and YOU WERE WRONG your prediction of85% of ppl going to see this movie didn't see the animated version..YOUWERE WRONG on that!! some pplz pplz recast this movie at least overhalf the cast and get another director....cause the story is alreadywell written..I WILL NOT BE WASTING MY MONEY TO SEE THE SECOND OR THIRDBOOKS IF HE IS GOING TO BE WRITING THE NEXT ONES, ID RATHER WATCH THEANIMATED SERIES AND REMEMBER THE AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER IN ALL ITSGOOD RICH WRITING AND DIRECTING.

While not without a few cool moments, The Last Airbender really failed on all elements. The movie tried to fit the entire first season of the series into a 2-hr movie which made for a break-neck pace, but was oddly boring. It gave no time to flesh out the characters so the viewer has no reason to care. On top of that, I'm really unsure who to blame for the horrid acting. Most of the actors were newish so I can understand why they had a difficult time. However, if you've seen The Happening you know that M. Night Shyamalan has a history of giving poor direction to his actors so it's more than likely his fault. Speaking of Mr. Shama-lama-ding-dong, he once again proved that he should not be allowed anywhere near a script. He absolutely OBLITERATED it! If you have not seen the series, you will most like have no FREAKING idea what the hell is going on. He makes the story that unintelligible. They have also turned it into a race war. The fire nation was Indian while all the other nations looked Caucasian. Not a huge deal but it was completely unnecessary. The only thing that shined through this piece of crap was the visuals. The bending was nice to look at, but they couldn't even get that right. They would do a martial arts "dance" for like 5 mins before anything (water, earth, fire or air) started to move. That's not how it's supposed to be. If they have any hope of salvaging the movie series, they need to ditch Shyamalan. Let him go play with the murderous trees in his Village in the Water.

I personally loved the movie and can't wait till it comes out on DVDbecause its one I am sure to buy. I was sooooo exited to see the movieand was majorly happy with everything the effects were amazing. Ithought the way the actors pronounced a few things was a bit annoyingIt is Aang not oong, but aside from that the acting was top notch. Theycould have made Jackson Rathbone a bit funnier though his character isa funny guy ! I thought the the elemental effects where very cool they actuallylooked very real and I think it was the Avatar state Aang went intomade me gasp because it was cool on the cartoon show but on screen itwas amazing.I really hope the continue to make then next 2 books because I wouldvery much like to see there take on things. And really want to see Toph! Out of 10 its totally a 10 best movie I've seen this year.

Loved it! Yes there were a lot of stuff cut out of the movie that they had in the cartoon and yes some of the acting was a bit off but it was a great movie and it tells a great story. M. Night was damned if he did and damned if he didnt. Dont base wether you are going to see this movie or not bc you hate M. Nights movies, he didnt even write it! He made this movie from a cartoon series something he has never done before. You need to see it to make your own opinion but i loved it and will be purchasing the DVD.

Points for the actors, visual effects, storyline, and adventure. I donot understand the bashing of this movie. I liked it enough to watch ittwice. M. Night Shyamalan did a good job as far as I am concerned. Iwent into it not knowing anything about what it was based on if thatmakes a difference. I didn't mind that it wasn't full of top stars. Iliked the portrayed characters and wanted to follow along with how thestory would turn out for them. The action was good. The visual effectswere done well and looked great. The fantasy story was thoughtful. Itseemed like a blend of "Star Wars" meets "The Golden Child" kind ofmovie to me.

***********************May Contain Spoilers****************************I have sadly decided that M. Night Shyamalan should never be allowed todirect again. The only good movie he ever made was 6th sense but evenlike that it's not even a classic. Not like Scrosese, Tarentino, orStone. I think the movie had a huge potential but with him at the helmsit comes up a little short. Plus my favorite part was totally cut outand they made it all soft. Lame. I am just disappointed with the filmbecause I am a huge fan of the series. Lets hope Paramount gets smartand ask someone else to write the script or have someone else directingit.PS for all you Shyamalan fans this director maybe a acquire taste. Butit is an acquire taste I would like to spit out.

I have been a fan of the cartoon series since it began, yet I walkedinto this theater expecting the movie to be terrible. You see I didthis to try and take the edge off the movie. In my mind, it was simple,if it's terrible I'm right and I feel sort of OK with the world, ifit's good well then it's good. This usually works for me, I live arounda cheap theater so I'm always walking into allot of terrible films. It didn't work.I'm going to review this film for those of you who are fans of thecartoon and for those of you who don't know anything about this film, because the film somehow fails on both fronts. To begin, I would likeeveryone to remember the recent live action rendition of DragonBalls... Do you remember watching that and feeling a little sick. Sickthat they not only they trashed the storyline, the characters, andgeneral film-making practices. Remember how you thought, well it can'tget worse than this. Enjoy âºFor those who didn't follow the cartoonShyamalan tried to squeeze a full season of a cartoon series into 2hours, and in doing so focused only on the important plot points of asingle character, Zhao, who is a minor character as the series goes. Indoing so, he COMPLETELY misses any character development and all theother characters are simply are left with confusing monologues tryingto explain (failing) the complicated world/storyline of the Airbenderseries. As such the world comes off 2D (HA!) and in a way where younever want to hear of spirits again. There is a saying in writing "Showme, don't tell me",the audience is told what to think, were not shownanything and it honestly comes off as if he thinks the audience isn'tworth the effort. Looks like Shyamalan needs to go back to school, focused to much on pretentious symbolism I guess. I think Shyamalan didthis in a basement. Remember the rumor he tried to spread a few yearsago that he never left Philly. Well the only scene that seemed real, looked like the PA backwoods. Everything else was terrible and lackedperspective. Shyamalan likes close ups and dark corners, and theAirbender series required large scenes of light and deep horizons, itinstills the feeling of a endless universe which helps sell spirits andanother fantasy world. But Shyamalan's work is meant to beintrospective, kind of lame-duck art student project where you see achicken getting it's head cut off and your meant to see how it's asymbol for industrialism. Needless to say they couldn't have picked aworse director. He didn't have clue what he was doing. For thecharacters, writing, or scenery. As I think about it, the only REALLYdark character in the first season was Zhao. This character is small, maybe 5 episodes out of 20. I think he has the most lines in the moviehell he might even have most screen time of the characters. It's theonly character Shyamalan felt any understanding of, kindred spirit Iguess (which is funny cause he tries to kill all spirits). OH funnyspoiler death was never something in the movie or series.. The ONLYobserved death in the movie is Zhao who is suffocated to death on thescreen, no cut aways. He wanted us to see this. I mean it's still akids film! At least in the series he was dragged under water, thistime, up in the air, in front of the screen panic stricken as he'ssuffocated to death. The action scenes are terrible. The martial artsare all show, this was intentional, so the actors were taught the bareminimum. As a consequence, they have no feeling in their movement, anddespite the fact its not meant to touch their foes, it comes off askindergarten secession at tiger Schulmann's karate. There was nothingrewarding about this film. The audience was half packed, and by theend, half had walked out. The remaining people booed. I have never seenthis feeling so widely felt. Don't go, just forget about it, spareyourself. For those who followed the cartoonGuys they killed everything we ever loved about these characters. Andwe can't even blame the actors. I'm sure I would have been a littlehappier with some Disney larva instead of the standard nickelodeon rugrat, but it honestly wouldn't have made a difference. Shyamalan somehowwrote/approved a script without ANY hint of emotional depth whatsoeverand picked kids that you could tell were just being herded in and outof plastic ice doorways to say meaningless one liners. Aang the Avatar, which somehow everyone in the movie pronounces differently then thecartoon?, is this hollow little kid. Remember how Aang was a happy kid, well this kid ain't got anything in him. Remember how Katara was strongwilled and hopeful, now she just comes off as helpless and pathetic.Remember how Sokka was funny, well now it reminds me Jake Gyllenhaal injar head, some war torn kid. Remember how Iroh was fat and happy withbits of wisdom? Well now he's just some dude. Hell the fire lord comesoff as a Roman Emperor (likely intentionally) without any emotion whichsort of conflicts with the whole fire thing. Zhao has the mostcharacter development out of everyone somehow. Enough with characters,it gets worse. Shyamalan has a cave with a dragon for the spirit world. You would think that Shyamalan a deadbeat director after as manyghost/spirit/alien films would have a sense of the other realm, well hemissed it guys. I can't write this anymore. Yeah I'm done. Don't goguys. Spare yourself having to go through the process of getting yourmoney back.

I do not believe how a beautiful story like Avatar could be butcheredby anybody like Shayamalan did. Even a first year student would nothave ruined this movie like the disaster i watched last night. whychange races? why cut off everything about katara?? were you in ahurry? why didn't you at least take one scene more than twice and see abetter acting?? what was this? it is so bad that i cant find the rightwords to describe the failure.. how come aang just starts to controlthe avatar state? oh man, sorry, too bad to pass as a movie.. stop, andnever make a second one. if they could just once watch the originalseries, they would have known that characters are the engines of thestory, killing all the good things in those characters and creating newones(like an unhappy stagnant aang, although he was a cheerful andhappy character in the original series)ruined everything.
clarkmann69 17 April 2012
This is a great movie if it remained true to its characters, andimproved the characterization developed in the movie. It's a greatmovie but it suffered parts lost from the original animated series.Fans would find this is just like a long trailer of the entire movie.Non Avatar fans would feel the movie is a bit incomplete. The storycould have improved if they've made some scenes a bit less serious likethe series were and built a more relationship with the characters, thestory were flowing so fast to get to the war scenes and then leave youhanging in the end...then you'll feel this question: is that it? is itover already? we're just getting started...

I went into this movie expecting to give allowances every step of theway, since it was attempting to cram 20 episodes worth of action intoless then two hours. But there's only so much a die-hard fan can take. From the moment the movie started It felt stilted and wrong and phony. The first interaction between Sokka and Katara was awkward, and made mewince a little to watch. they jumped around too much, with little inbetween, basically becoming a 'greatest hits' version of season 1 ofthe animated series. There were no little moments in between to justcalm down and laugh a little. it was all BANG BANG BOOM, all the time.It saddened me the further in I got, which is really bad, considering Iwanted so badly to love the movie to pieces, no matter what thenaysayers decided to spew. All the actors were pretty bad, but I think Nicola (Katara) andSeychelle (Yue) did the best with what they had. Nicola put some muchneeded heart into her portrayal of Katara, and you actually sort ofkind of believe her concern for Aang. Seychelle made for aheartbreakingly beautiful Yue who painfully needed more screen time.Dev digs the lukewarm flow too, as Zuko, but I grew to like generaliroh, another actor who put heart into his character, something therest of the cast needs to learn how to do. No matter how crappy thescript, if it ain't got heart, it ain't got nothing.I'd recommend a once through in IMAX 3D, but definitely too painful foranother run-through after that. I hope and pray book 2 is able to begreen-lighted, just so they can learn from this one and make it better.

I tried to give this movie a chance. I tried to look past the poortaste in casting choices & I tried to look past the bad reviews. Andnow here I am, writing one myself. There were many parts of the movie that I just laughed at. I'mconvinced M. Night Shyamalan makes it his goal in life to create badmovies just so people can talk about how bad they are."Soaka", "Ong" and Katara gave terrible delivery of their lines and Idon't think Shyamalan's bad writing is enough to justify it. I cannotfor one second believe that these actors were the best for the job. They had no chemistry, and there was no real friendship developmentbetween the main Trio. Most of their dialouge is "Awvatar" relatedstuff. "Ong" seems to be better friends with Zuko than he does with"Soaka" and Katara. Again, Shyamalan's writing, which was probably dugup from his 2nd grade writing drafts archive, is to blame.Dev Patel was probably the last actor I thought should be cast as Zukoand yet, he was the one I liked the most. How is it I found myselflooking forward to his scenes than with the wooden "heroes"? His uncle"Eero" is another story, as I felt he lacked the light hearted, comedicvibe that IROH has in the cartoon. Once again, not the actor but thewriting.Shyamalan's way of trying to extinguish the casting controversy fire isto sprinkle ethnic actors all around. Of course he fails to do so. Hemakes the evil fire benders, prisoner earth benders, and helpless watertribe people of all different ethnic backgrounds. What does that say toyou? I did not feel any darkness in Fireload Ozai and felt he lackedthe truly evil, creepy vibe. Or am I talking about Commander Zhao? Howis it that Ozai and Zhao look more like brothers than Ozai and "Eero"?At this point, I am not hoping for a sequel but a reboot with a newdirector and writer. Patel is probably the only actor that should bekept, as I feel Zuko is the only character the film got right.
