To Hell and Back - Audie Murphy

A very good portrayal of Audie Murphy's life before and during WWII. I have watched this movie many, many times and never tire of it. It's especially refreshing that the character that the movie is about is portrayed by the actual character of events and that must have been a very emotional undertaking by Audie Murphy. I am most happy to now own my own copy of the movie on DVD and if comes out in Blu-ray I will own that too.Peter R. Crowe "WWII buff"

Great movie

This review is from: To Hell and Back (DVD) Audie Murphy was a childhood hero of mine so I'm a bit biased. I always recommend reading the book, that the movie was made from, first. So read the book too. It's very cool that Audie Murphy plays himself in the movie. This movie is a great way to start a history discussion and exploration with your children.

A movie given a great boost by Life magazine

Quite often I see a movie then seek out the book but when I came to theUS from Canada when I was 13 the first purchase I made was thepaperback version of "To Hell and Back" ($0.35). Of course Audie Murphyis perfectly cast and gives a performance far superior to any of hissubsequent movie roles. The others, notably Marshall Thompson, JackKelly, David Janssen and Art Aragon give satisfying performances. Inmany ways this was the "Saving Private Ryan" of its time for its"realistic" portrayal of the foot soldier in WW 2. Life magazineboosted the audience for this film when it put Murphy on the cover andemphasized that the story was true. I think that it works becauseMurphy doesn't look like the typical movie hero. The book is once againavailable in a new larger page-size paperback.

Incredible story... a true HERO

These days the word hero is bandied about, describing anyone who goes to work, fights a fire, shoots a bad guy, ad nauseam.Audey Murphy was a true hero, the most decorated soldier ever to wear an American uniform. Among his decorations are the top three or four medals that are possible to win: Medal of Honor, Distinguised Service Medal, Croix De Guerre and so many more that it is difficult to list. Silver Star, Bronze Star also. All the more amazing is the fact that Murphy was only 16 (!) when he enlisted in the army. A manchild of disproportionate courage and skill as a killer and warrior. He led men twice his age before the war ended, as a lieutenant and company commander. Now, to come back and act as himself in a movie about his own exploits is even more amazing. A truly great movie about a truly great man.Other war movies seem shallow and storyless compared to the true story of this young man.By the way, do you know who the SECOND most decorated soldier in our history was? No?Neville Brand, also an actor.

Surprisingly Good Hollywood Take On Murphy's War

The single biggest reason to watch this movie is that the star himself was in fact the single most decorated war hero of World War Two, and he is convincing here playing himself with dignity, sincerity, and humility, which, of course, Audie Murphy always had in spades. The movie was adopted from his best-selling autobiography, which my Mom let me read after blackening out all of the four letter slang (as she called it). Perhaps it shows that he was my childhood hero, and I still have a personalized autographed photo somewhere reading "Thanks, Barry, for being my fan" that a friend's mom got for three or four of us ten year olds at the time this movie was released in the mid 1950s. It was the first movie I saw ten times. And I wasn't alone; Murphy was a national icon. The movie truly is a classic; tightly directed, poignant, honest, accurate, and showing gripping combat without being gory or maudlin. It sometimes decends into travelogue movie-theater type newsreel moments, but these are thankfully rare and forgiveable. On the other hand, this is an interesting and absolutely true story of a common and uneducated boy from rural Texas who wanted more than anything to be a soldier and serve his country, and his subsequent deeds and patriotism above and beyond the call of duty inspired a whole generation of us who wanted to imitate his call to country. Unfortunately we walked into another time and the miasma of Vietnam. But that's another story for another time. Escape back to a time when the moral choices were clearer, and a real live hero was available to act his way memorably through an accurate recounting of his extraordinary if abbreviated military career. He may be gone too soon, the victim of a plane crash in the early 1970s, but his lifetime admirers remain. Enjoy!

The Real World War II Medal of Honor Movie

This review is from: To Hell and Back (DVD) The classic All-American story about an authentic hero and a Medal of Honor winner of World War II. Audie Murphy stars in the true story of this young leader of men in the battle against Hitler's Nazi's across Europe. One of my all time military movie favorites.

Very good

Hey its a good movie....but one thing that the movie compresses to the extreme is his act that won him the Medal of Honor. Its EXTREMELY downplayed in the movie. In reality he held off a German advance from 3 directions for over an HOUR....an hour!!! Then just seconds after he jumped off the tank it blew up. Just wanted to set the record straight on that....

To Hell and Back

I had searched for years for the movie, "To Hell and BAck" as my late husband was one of the soldiers on the field when the medals were presented, I am so happy that I received it and in such good time and condition. Always depend on Amazon.

Very good movie

This review is from: To Hell and Back (DVD) To Hell and Back is an excellent movie about Audie Murphy's life. He is truly one of America's Heroes as shown by his actions on the battlefield. Audie is not only a good soldier but as it turns out he is a good actor as well. He holds his own with the other professional actors in the movie. The action scenes are good but could be more if you're into action. All in all it's a good choice to learn about the men who fought the second world war.

Doesn't work.

This movie plays more as a tool of propaganda for the US military, thanpresenting a good story with good acting and memorablecharacters.Instead we just sit back and are just watching things happen like a 3minutenews reel. You feel no sense of danger when the battles are ranging, youdon't feel camradare for the soldiers fighting cause the actors are lame, you don't feel sadness when the soldiers die. We are forced to fumblealongas the hero, goes from battle to battle and it's all the same. On top ofthat we have to keep hearing his humility in how he always says he's notworthy of being promoted. And of course we then hear all his buddiescongratulating him. Over and over and over and over....It's like watching 4 year olds play cowboys and indians its bang bang yourdead I won The End. And of course the only Native guy in the picture hastobe refered to as "chief". There was ONE actor in this picture whosecharacter was interesting and seemed like he would develop on in the film. But his presence and dialogue in the movie died (not cause he was killed)shortly leaving me more frustrated. The thing is there probably is a real story here but the translation justdoesn't work in this film.Rating 3 out of 10.

The very definition of a Hero !

In this autobiographical war film, the viewer is shown in a marvelouslythought-provoking fashion the true meaning of heroism. Murphy wasrejected by the Navy and USMC, yet became our nation's most decoratedveteran. Especially poignant are the scenes wherein Audie Murphy losesthose closest to him. His tears are more than acting, they representhis memories of the real life sacrifice of the fallen heroes of WW II.This is a masterpiece of autobiographical cinema ! The performances are realistic and yet familiar to us veterans . Thecamaraderie, sorrow, hardship and esprit de corps transcend thehalf-century which has passed. The final battle scene which depictsAudie's Medal Of Honor winning actions is moving but characteristicallymodest in its presentation. Enjoy this portrait of a true Americanhero.

A good soldier's story, played by "THE REAL McCOY"

I've always Liked watching Audie Murphy's movies since I was a child. Iguess it also had to do with the fact that he had that baby face. Being acombat wounded Viet Nam vet, I can relate to his ordeal during and afterthewar. This man was a caring man who thought of others. Like many other"Medalof Honor" winners; he like the others are not the movie RAMBO hero. TheyAre"THE REAL McCOYS" It's ironic, though. His last movie in 1971 was called"Atime for dying"[A Jesse James movie.] In that same year he died in a smallplane crash. A friend of his had once said," all those Germans could notkill him,yet a plane crash near home took his life." My last words are,"Mayhe be with the Lord."

A solid 1950's style WW2 movie.

I watched this movie because I was interested in seeing the story of AudieMurphy, the most decorated soldier in U.S. history. The fact that thismovie is based on Audie Murphy's autobiography, and that he stars as himselfin the film, added to my interest. I didn't have high pre-expectations, so Iwas pleasantly surprised while watching this enjoyable film. To Hell andBack is a solid 1950's style WW2 movie, which focuses on the camaraderie ofthe foot soldier. It is neither pro nor anti-war, as it has a high body, butshows little of the bloodshed or true horror of war.
