It's not as much sheer fun as Predator, but then again, what is?

commander_zero 19 May 2012

The audience is their willing victim

My son and I had just watched "Point Break," with its harrowingskydiving scenes. Maybe this is why Adrien Brody's opening free fall, meant to be breathtaking, comes across as lifeless CGI. "Lifeless" is agood description of the film as a whole--it becomes a genuine actionfilm only in fits and starts, such as the humans' discovery of thealien camp, and the fight between the yakuza character and thepredator--even though the latter setup is such an obvious ripoff of the"log bridge" scenes from the first "Predator." For this film, "ripoff"is an unfair term--it is not that the screenwriters knowingly stole outof laziness, it is just that they are obviously fanboys who have neverread anything but comic books and have never seriously delved into thedynamics that make a good action film. The film is full of greatactors, all of whom are better represented in other movies. Perhapsthis is true of all action films, but certainly "Predator 2" at somepoint gave performers such as Danny Glover, Gary Busey and Bill Paxtonthe chance to do what they do best. This could be one reason that"Predator 2" is the best film in the series, although in comparison to"Predators," even the much-maligned Paul WS Anderson "Alien vsPredator" is looking better all the time.

Needs more light...

This review is from: Predators (DVD) I don't understand why they kept this one so dark. Perhaps the producers wanted to add an element of suspense. Well, they were wrong. It is good movie gone bad for lack a few kilowatts. Too bad. The open sequence gets your interest right away and everything is OK, except a few flaws. It deserved 4 stars, but it was too dark for my taste.

RUN! GET TO THE CINEMA! ...but some will be disappointed.

*Spoilers* Predators reviewAs far as franchises go, here's one they've been waiting for. After thetrailers appeared on the internet and had the fans checking lists, suchas talented cast and a trusty producer being Mr Rodriguez. The filmopens with high flying fast paced opening sequence that hits the groundand opens with a bang, it's as cool as what people want it to be. Thecharacters know the plot too, we're a bunch of hard boiled killers whoare being hunted, on a different planet. What follows is a first actthat turns into a sci-fi thriller masterpiece, and CGI doesn't reallyexist on this planet. After the first confirmed kill it only gets better, even though thefirst deceased is sadly none other than king of the Mexicans DannyTrejo. One things for sure here, this isn't going to be easy. Thepredators thermal vision is back and updated, as well as the sneakycamouflage that the predators wear. The attack of the predators dogs issimply put; awesome, forgot what you've seen in the clips on theinternet, these are full on animatronic bastards. Cue cameo Lawrence Fishburne, and this is where the audience beings togets hunted for their admittance price. From what starts off to be 'heylook its Morpheus and he owns' quickly turns into awkward and eyes willroll for most. At this point we know whose who and what they do. Leaderof the pack Adrian Brody, fitting quite well into the action world. Thetough chick ace sniper, the lovable mini gun wielding Russian. Then wehave misplaced but hopefully explained Topher Grace's wimpy doctor. Thesilent 'where's his sword already?!'Yakuza. And the psychopathic serialkiller who is surprisingly not dead yet. Once Lawrence's role getsblown into a short cameo, Predators unmasks itself into a disappointingfinal last stand act. What could have been a new take on the predatorfranchise all suited up for another sequel, is poorly constructed, andfizzes out. While Topher Grace background is unveiled, it seems wasted, andpointless. Those who don't like the film, will want to stick aroundjust in time to see him bite the dust. For die hard fans may love thereferences to the 1987 original such as an Arnie mention, that's allyour going to get. It's almost as if they have copied and pasted thesame score onto the new film. So what started at as the best predatorsfilm ever turns from 'I cant wait to buy it on DVD' turns quickly bythe time the credits start rolling, you might think 'maybe I'll justrent it then...'

More A Sequel Than A Remake

Of all the Predator themed films that have been made since the original, most have simply either placed them in new suroundings or have expanded on the ever growing mythos of their savage hunting culture. But with PREDATORS, director Anwar Nidal takes them back to their roots. In the first film, Schwartzenegger battled the solo Predator in a manner that clearly delineated the gap between the fighting skills of humanity's best and those of an alien breed. What Arnold taught us is that these intergalactic trophy hunters were fierce fighters indeed but were singularly lacking in that immortal spark that we call inspiration. In PREDATORS, Adrien Brody takes up where Arnold left off. Both films begin on a similar note. A group of experienced combat veterans, hit men, and assorted human predators gather in a jungle setting to square off against a trio of totally vicious aliens who prize trophy heads even over their own lives. How these human killers arrive is of no consequence. The film does little more than simply to have them literally fall out of the sky. As they land, they meet, they squabble but quickly realize that their only collective chance to survive is to co-operate. Most of them are dramatic straw men, designed only to show one particular type of human being. Their is Alice Braga, a butt kicking woman assassin who takes an instant distrust to Brody. There is Danny Trejo, a Columbian Medelin hit man. Most of the other actors are unknown, except for a brief appearance midway by Lawrence Fishburne who suggests that his own interaction with the beasties implies that the millennia long history of humanity is intertwined with that of the Predators. In the original PREDATOR as with this one, the function of this race of head hunters is to point out that they exist on some deep primordial level as the avatars of humanity's need to have a devil figure to function as a pure metaphor of our own need dominate others. And domination requires proof as such. With Predators, this proof is akin to our own lamentable custom of taking scalps, in this case skulls. PREDATORS is an action film that nevertheless succeeds in suggesting that there is no basic difference between the human version of headhunters and the alien, except that even in the most degenerate of humans, there yet exists a spark of humanity and co-operation that sets us off from them. We may take the screaming heads of our own victims as do they but we can question the need to do so. They, on the other hand, live for these trophies. PREDATORS permits the audience to enjoy a thrill a minute ride while simultaneously suggesting that this thrill need not define us as a species.

This movie made me want to skin myself

Horrible movie. Worst casting ever in the history of ever. No matter how much Hollywood wants me to believe that Adrian Brody is a leading man / action star, I just cannot willfully suspend my disbelief. He is to action star as Arnold was to comedic actor. All around bad acting with weak plot and despite the couple of recognizable faces (L. Fishburne, D. Trejo), this movie is an affront to good entertainment.

Tim Martain 09 May 2012

If you don't know the original 1987 classic Predator line-for-line and inside-out, you will probably miss half the gags in this one.

If your a fan of the original then this film is worth your time.

The movie Predators finally does something right compared to the lasttwo films that have come out involving them. You actually want to watchthe film from beginning to end. By far this film isn't a must see filmof the year but if your a fan of the original it is worth watching.Just don't go in with the expectation that it is going to be betterthat the first film but to be honest there are very few sequels outthere that are. The film did the series justice with a nice amount ofaction and story. I can't say the story was all that complicated or indepth but it was entertaining. When I went to the film I had zeroexpectations. I was hoping to see some decent action shots and somehorrible acting. I was was actually surprised the acting wasn't thatbad, one that surprised me to see was Adrian Brody. He did a fairlywell job at play a tough guy. I wish that his character was a littlemore developed in the film but all an all he did an outstanding job.So, if you go see this film look at it as a different spin on a oldclassic but for once you can see what is going on verses all of theaction being blocked out by scenes done in the dark.

Can't get the Governator? Cast a real actor!

So bad it hurts more than being hunted by one...

... Predator. Aside they replicated every possible scene from firstmovie other elements are just poor. First of all casting; it's bad, really bad. Hoever had idea that Adrian Brody can play though guy hasmisfired big time. Next is acting which is average and to none ofactors you will be able to connect in any way. Photography is bitdarkish which is maybe desired element in movies meant to scare theaudience but here it just does not work, it gives movie a tired look.Screenplay is stupendous and every time action involves predators, wellit's like they forget their skill's a bit and humans seem more capableone would imagine. Ending is bad bad so bad. Predator suddenly speaksEnglish and we have a serial killer on our hands here. It's like mixingcliché thriller with bad sci-fi. Avoid if you like first two predatormovies and dislike AVP 1 and 2.

What Predators?

This movie was no way better than the original. It was slow, bad acting all around, too many actors with little to say and writers need to listen and see the original. Robert, I'm disapointed.AVP was even more exciting.1 Star out of 5

A superb, nostalgic reboot that exceeds expectations

Predators has been one of my most anticipated films of the year eversince the trailer debuted. The trailer gave off the impression that thereboot had the same atmosphere that the original film had, butmodernized with a new cast and contained more than one Predator. Whilethe Alien Vs Predator films were either terrible or left a lot to bedesired, could a new Predator film get everything back on track? I'mdelighted to say yes. That's exactly the case. The cast seems bizarre on paper; there's that guy who had sex with acreature that contained spliced human and animal DNA (Adrien Brody),Eric Forman from That 70's Show (Topher Grace), that girl who wasmostly artificial organs in Repo Men (Alice Braga), that guy who alwaysmanages to play a bad ass Mexican and appears in most Robert Rodriguezfilms (Danny Trejo), Morpheus from The Matrix (Laurence Fishburne), andJason Voorhees (Derek Mears) among many others. The dynamic cast isactually one of the most absorbing factors of the film. Topher Graceadds that little bit of humor in most of the screen time he has and hischaracter ventures off into territory you may not be expecting."Justified"'s Walton Goggins steals quite a few humorous lines, aswell. Royce (Brody) and Isabelle (Braga) would probably be pretty dullif it wasn't for the chemistry the two develop the longer they'rearound each other. Laurence Fishburne's introduction scene alone isarguably more bad ass than anything he did in The Matrix. The castreally makes this film work; plain and simple.Returning to the jungle was another great move. It brings back thenostalgic factor of the first film that everyone seems to love. Thefact that they referenced the events in the original was a nice touch,as well. Even though Predators is not a direct sequel or a remake, it'sgood to know that at least all of this is taking place in the sameuniverse. The other thing that really makes this film fantastic otherthan the cast are the Predators themselves. They all look ratherbrilliant. While there are "smaller" Predators that look incrediblysimilar to the original design, there are others that are larger, stronger, and have slightly different weaponry or tracking devices. Thefilm doesn't shy away from blood and gore either, which I highlyapprove of. When a film like this uses the R-rating to its advantage,it just gives me goosebumps. The one thing that can really be nitpicked is the ending since the filmjust kind of stops and leaves way too much room for a sequel. Oddlyenough though, it's still strangely satisfying but that could be due tothe rest of the film being so superb.Predators delivers what could be the most solid reboot to date and isat least the best one that comes to mind when that term comes up. Thevisual and make-up effects are top notch, the strong cast seems to playoff one another and is entertaining to watch, and the film manages topay just enough homage to the original film while venturing off intoits own territory. Predators should please any fan of the franchise oranyone who enjoys action, sci-fi, thriller, or even horror films. Ifyou've been anticipating this film as much as I have and it didn'tdisappoint me, then you have nothing to lose.

Entertaining, yet you can't help but feel they didn't do enough.

OK, so after the travesties that were Alien vs. Predator and itssequel, AVPR, people, including myself, were extremely hyped thatRobert Rodriguez had taken it upon himself to resurrect this franchisefrom the brink. He succeeds, but only just about. In "Predators", a band of killers, reluctantly lead by mercenary Royce, played against type, albeit with gusto by Adrian Brody, are Predknappedand dropped on a Predator reserve planet, where they are subjected totrials and hunted by our new/old Predator pals. This film introduces us to a new breed of Predator, an upgraded SuperPredator, who unfortunately, don't make to much of an impression. They're fine until they remove their masks, but their facial design isgod-awful. They also move to slowly and seem to have the brain capacityof a common farm animal, unlike the original Predator, who had aseemingly endless amount of skill and intelligence. The new breed seemsto rely more on raw power and strength more than anything. Thankfully, the original style of Predator makes a substantial appearance, even ifhe meets an undignified demise. The main characters are interesting, with Royce's ruthlessness withhuman life tested by Isabelle, played by Alice Braga, who is the femalelife character in the film while still having a great deal of skillwith weaponry. Topher Grace and Walter Goggins are the source of comicrelief in the film, while Grace's character Edwin provides the maintwist towards the film's finale. Two characters that are severelyunderdeveloped are Nickolai and especially Hanzo, who provides a greatsamurai sword versus Predator blade fight in the middle of a field. Iwas extremely disappointed with Hanzo's lack of development, as he wasthe most interesting character in the film. The action scenes are well done, with director Nimrod Antal handlingwith aplomb. One thing I was most disappointed with in this film wasthe music. We all know John Debney is great composer, but here he seemsto have collapsed under the pressure of following Silvestri'sfootsteps. Most of the music was copied and pasted from the originalfilm, with the original music Debney composed being saved for sceneswhere it not very noticeable. Silvestri's score, while a great listen,is outdated for today's standards, and it gives the film an unneededand unwanted slightly cheesy 80's feel, one reason it suffers. The pros are the acting, action, pacing, the inclusion of the "classic"Predator, and the interesting if underdeveloped characters. The consare the huge amount of homages to the original, the music, and thedesign for the new Predators.Summed up, a hell of a lot better than the two AVP's, but not near asgood as the first two movies. Hopefully next time, Rodriguez and Antalwill have settled down more and try something more original.A solid 6.5-7/10.

Expected more

So, here is my "quick" review, doesn't include direct spoilers, butI'll still put a warning. What I personally expected, was lots of gun fire, predators trying todecapitate people, mysterious, twisted storyline and some kind of a"WOW!" feeling. Well, at the first 20 minutes nothing really happens inthe movie, I thought there would imaginative story telling or somethinglike that, but no. So then I thought that there would be lots of actionto cover poor storyline. There were some good action parts, but theyended too obviously. There were moments when I thought "Ok, maybe nowits getting better!". Then i realized that the movie was over. The plot was crystal clear from beginning to the end. Not really anytwists... About 2 minutes after the movie started you could see whomade it to the end of the movie. This is nothing compared to the first Predator. I was expecting more, much more from this movie.I gave this movie 5/10, because it didn't have the Predator feeling into it. There were some good parts, but nothing to be exited about.

Not as good as the original

Putting aside all the hype surrounding this movie, I like it but not asmuch as the first because of the following reasons: 1. Why was AdrienBrody growling his dialogues throughout the movie.2. Topher Grace with negative shades.. ahem.. he's also the comicrelief by the way.. doesn't do much damage though does he..3. Movie was quite predictable in some places.. The thrills and chillsnever came.4. Some of the scenes could have been developed further into goodaction scenes but most of them had tame endings. For example, we nevergot to see what happened to Danny Trejo's character. One moment he'sshooting down the weird dog creatures, the next moment he's appealingfor help as part of a trap set by the predators for the remainingmembers of the group.5. The black guy gets killed next (no surprises there I guess).6. The part where the Russian guy gets one of the predators (won't tellyou how) has already been done in so many movies before.7. Laurence Fishburne got wasted.. literally.8. Predictably the hero comes back for the girl.9. Initially, the movie takes too long to develop. Now the good parts..1. The casting was good, especially that of Adrien Brody considering hedoesn't look the macho type. If only he hadn't growled so much to lookmacho.2. The setting (the hunting ground) - another planet.. interesting..will make for a good sequel, if there are any.3. The introduction of two types of predators..4. They stuck to the original background score.5. They did not reinvent the wheel. I also like the fact that theyacknowledged the prequel.. most sequels don't bother acknowledging thefact that there have been precedents..6. No time was wasted on histrionics.. just that the movie takes alittle long initially to develop; after that though it is relativelyfast paced.Treat this movie as the build up to the sequel. I am hoping that thesequel will explore new grounds.. maybe better tactics against thePredators.. bigger meaner predators.. a more sinister plot.. bettercharacter development.. The sequel ought to be pretty damn good. They've got a good thing going..Here's to the sequel..

Though Predators isn't quite as well put together as the original film, nor do the sequences offer the same sustained threat, it's still enough to get your adrenaline flowing.

archwordsmith 24 April 2012

good but not satisfying enough

PREDATORS!! When I think of this word my neurons automatically sparkback to the jungles where Arnold and his men are fighting out against aforce they can't see, a force they can't overpower with all theirgunpowder and artillery, a force that one by one kills them and skinsthem later, finally hanging them upside down from the trees. The moviewas released way back in '87 when I was two. Well I got to see it forthe first time in the summer of 2003; a whole 16 years later whensci-fi movie were a treat to watch thanks to the matrix and its manyclones. This movie had very basic SFX but somehow they lookedastonishing. When I think about it and question myself why does themovie still appeals to my senses and for the matter of fact to thesenses of millions of movie aficionados' is because that the moviescored in one aspect; FEAR – it created a sense of fear that would makeus curse the soldiers every time they made a silly move, a fear thatmade us wish that Arnold ends up gifting a really horrific death to"the jungle that came alive". It really was a movie, or rather is amovie that will be cherished by generations to come, no matter howvisually unbelievable the SFX get in the future movies. So when I heard about this new flick I was really excited keeping inmind the massacre of the franchise in the name of AVP. Also the heavyduty star cast got me all pumped up and I eagerly waited for theinvisible, horrific aliens to blast my senses off using their trianglefocus lasers. And so I went to see the movie the very same day it hitthe screens in my town.About 2 hours later I was out having enjoyed a lot. The cinematographywas great (especially the scene where they all stare at the horizon indisbelief), the acting was good keeping in mind that it is an all outaction flick (especially the guy who you people remember better as thevenom/Eddie Brock Jr. from the Spiderman 3), the stunts and action wascool, the SFX brilliant and the biggest USP of all was a beefed upAdrian Brody (remember pianist, king Kong). But at the end of it all Iwas disappointed because the main star of the movie was not threateningenough. Yes the predators don't enchant you, they do not instill anyfear in you, and they do not make you wish for their death. And that iswhere the movie ends as a disappointment for the predator maniacs likeme. My verdict is; go and watch the flick because it really is good but donot expect the same intensity as in the original. Also Mr.Brody is agreat actor and has built up a lot of muscles but he still ain't Arnoldwhen it comes to action flicks.A word of note to the filmmakers: - please do not waste actors likeDanny Trejo and Lawrence 'Morpheus' Fishburne in such miniscule roles.

Always was and always will be badass!

The original Predator is a great action movie. The follow up with DannyGlover was not as good, but still pretty bad-ass. Even though thisinstallment did not follow the Alien vs. Predators offshoot I willstill go on record as saying they are both entertaining movies. The reason for all of those things is because the Predator is just aflat-out badass character. The Predator is a super-hunter that huntsmen (and in some instances Aliens) as its most dangerous game. He cancloak, he has a laser gun, he has heat vision, and he has a retractablesword on his arm. That is not to mention a slew of other cool gadgetsonly meant to aid in killing. The premise of this movie is that the Predators have abducted the bestkillers on the planet earth and put them into their own private gamepreserve planet. Adrian Brody leads a relatively recognizable cast asthe mercenary Royce. The band of humans first goal is just to survive, but when they learn what they are into they decide to fight back. This movie is filled with plenty of action and gore that anyaction/sci-fi fan can and will enjoy. It is by no means the best movieever made, but if you are an action fan or a fan of the series it isdefinitely a must see. 7.5 out of 10.

Forget Predator 2 and all that Alien Vs Predator rubbish - this is the sequel that the Arnie-starring '80s actioner deserved.

Where's the Character?

Since I don't get trailers where I am, all I knew about this movie wasthat Robert Rodriguez was involved and Oscar winner Adrien Brody wasthe star. What sets this apart from its predecessors are two things: 1) unlikethe previous 2 which were set on Earth, this one is set on anotherplanet, "one big game preserve", as one of the characters put it; 2)rather than having characters who were professional soldiers orpolicemen, here a major of the characters are from the opposite side ofthe spectrum (criminals, death squad members and mercenaries). Thereare a couple of professional soldiers, who also seem to play the partof moral compass for the group, but everyone else has probably been ona wanted poster at some point. The movie opens strongly enough, with Adrien free falling through thealien sky, albeit unconscious. He wakes up and activates the chute thePredators thoughtfully gave him. He quickly links up with the otherprey and they all quickly realize where they aren't and why they arethere, and then off they go not only to survive, but to win. What I have learned in my studying of films is that a problem with amovie can be found in one (or more) of three areas: structure, plot andcharacter. The film is structurally sound, with a solid beginning, middle and end, and the plot is as straightforward as you canget--survival. The problem therefore is with the characters. The problem is that they're all razor-thin, there is nothing for us tohold on to, no reason to root for them, and the efforts of theprofessional soldiers to play the soul of the movie are half-hearted atbest. The only one of the prey who stood out was a nearly-silent Yakuzaassassin who, upon his arrival on the planet, does not freak out butrather calmly takes off his shoes. No reason is given for this, but itwas interesting enough for me to focus on him throughout.Aside from the paper-thin characters, this film is solid enough and hasenough action and gunplay to recommend for a rental.
