I enjoyed this movie and the special effects rock . However JayBaruchel as the title character is a major miscast. The wooden acting ,grating one note performance and sloppy look all bring this movie down.If he isn't whining , he's cheesing it up with really bad dialog like"knuckle bump" or "Can i pee now?" .Warranted he didn't write thescript which at times is really bad but he doesn't help it with hisirritating child like outcast role. I'm not familiar with any of hisother work but he belongs behind the camera as in maybe voice-overs notin front of it. I've heard he does voice-overs better .Maybe he shouldstick to that. The rest of the cast does well, Cage is brooding andmysterious and the always beautiful Monica Belluci looks great. AlfredMolina sinister to the max and the always amazing Alice Krige as themajor baddie, loved her as the Borg Queen in the Star Trek movies too.The love interest in this movie was no doubt put in for the teenagehormone ravaged boys as she adds nothing to the movie when she is onscreen besides eye candy , she can't act any better than Baruchel. Overall a 7/10 -- could have been so much better without Baruchel and abetter written storyline. Still it is mindless entertainment.

First of all, I have a soft spot for Cage's movies but I can for sure admit when he puts out a stinker, like many of his horror movies. Though this was an excellent movie and he sure made it. The lead role of the kid was not the actor I would of wanted, yeah he had to be nerdy but it was hard for me to take any of his lines seriously because of his voice, though he give force a good effort. The special effects was amazing and the story was strong and really entincing, no weak spots in it for me. I would go on more about what it was about but the first review give it a full detailed. In an extremely tiny nutshell, the movie is about the sorcerer trying to save the world from ultimate evil and his only hope lays within this really hopeless, nerdy kid. I am terrible at explaining movie, I just want people to know this is an amazing movie and at least rent it to experience the magic!

Nick Cage is apparently in every movie ever made.In this one, he happens to be great. The other actors are fine, too: Alfred Molina, Jay Baruchel, Theresa Palmer are surprisingly energetic. The plot is silly but fun.The special effects are nice, but I liked the fact (emphasized in the "Making Of" extra) that everybody tried to do them physically, with the actors coming up with stunts, rather than with CGI.The movie is predictable but the characters are so likeable and the acting so great, I can't help but give it five stars.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a mix of the television series Merlin, theAlchemyst book series from Michael Scott, and a dash of Doctor Who. Inthis world, anything is possible through magic using science. However,it requires not one, but two different prologues to explain everything. This must be why the marketing department didn't bother to explain thatthe movie revolves around the mortal enemies of Merlin and Morgana leFay. It was a very refreshing take on Merlin to kill him off in thefirst five minutes and set up Morgana for a present day awakening.Naturally, Merlin needs a successor but his personal "sword in thestone" takes the form of a ring: a dragon that sleeps until the day hemeets the special boy that will defeat Morgana forever.Enter, David Stutler, a screw-up kid who can't do anything right. Yet,who can resist a ten-year-old with a Buzz Lightyear alarm clock? JakeCherry is well-cast and well-trained to mirror the mannerisms of JayBaruchel, his grown-up counterpart who appears in the next scene.Baruchel first starred in the short lived television series,Undeclared. After nine years of being the co-star, his biggest role todate was the unseen voice actor for Hiccup in Dreamworks' How to TrainYour Dragon. Here, he's the titular character and pulls it off, eventhough his hair does seem Ten-ish. (Or perhaps Tennant-ish would be thebetter term.) Even more surprising was Nicholas Cage. His career seemedto have hit a creative plateau where his name was no longer a draw. Then, Kickass came along and reminded us why we liked him in the firstplace. His character is Balthazar Blake and was an apprentice ofMerlin. For over a thousand years, he's lived to help save the worldfrom the acolytes of Morgana and to find Merlin's successor. Usually,Cage appears too laid back, but here, even in silence you can see himacting whether it's the frown of his lips or the haunted look in hiseyes. You can see the thousand years he's lived through and what it'smeant to him.The Sorcerer's Apprentice runs under two hours, but never appears tooslow or too fast. The action only rests for a moment so the viewer cancatch their breath before it picks up again: betrayals, double-crosses,dragons coming alive or the greatest car chase ever. There is never amoment to stop and let the audience's minds reflect on whether theyneed more milk in the fridge or if they ought to get new shoes. The film is inspired by the cartoon short in Fantasia featuring MickeyMouse which was in turn inspired by a Victorian symphonic poem by PaulDukas. The required scene was done in a cute way that doesn't tarnishthe original and there is a further reference if you stay through allthe credits. This is the best film Jerry Bruckheimer has produced sincethe first two installments of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Well!!! The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a Disney film which means itsmainly aimed at families with children, so don't expect high level ofswearing, blood and guts of any kind because there's none. The story circles around a young lad who is trained by one of Merlin'sapprentice who's been living since King Arthur's era. There's quite afew times in this film where I say the word "Cool" because the theoriesof "Magic" in this film makes sense, in other words its not the personbeing able to do magic, they have to comprehend the basic elements andaspects of magic. The Jay Baruchel's voice takes a while to get used to (he's theapprentice), his persona or presence suits the character perfectlybecause he looks nerdy and weak. The thing all these kind of films have in common is that there isalways a "girl", the girl that the main character loved ever since hewas a foetus, but luckily the film doesn't strafe away from the maingoal which is to turn the apprentice into a master magician. This film is for anyone who is into the idea of "Magic".

The same people who to me are surprisingly rudely negative about thisfilm would probably say I'm too easily pleased, but I enjoy movies asescapism for the most part and see no need to pick this very enjoyablevehicle to death. Actually, some early negatives I'd read had meworried that I would be irritated I spent the money, instead I'vealready decided to buy this when it comes out.Overall, I'd say if you like romping easy movies like The Mummy,National Treasure, and Lake Placid you'll like this, plus refreshingly(without being sickeningly sweet) there is not one swear word orsexed-up scene, so take the older kids and Grandma. I thought NicolasCage was excellent, he looked great and can wear a leather dusterbetter than most, and there was some nice chemistry between Cage andBaruchel. Alred Molina looked like he was having fun and is such anenjoyable villain. Baruchel does a good job - he is so geeky at timesit is a tad painful - and I found myself rooting for him. The 2 mainfemale characters are lovely and appealing personalities.More pluses: A lively pace and I never lost interest plus a fair numberof laughs. Some interesting character twists with the oily youngrock-star magician helping Molina, and some very funny cheeky nods tothe original animated Fanatasia - watch for the nod to Star Wars. Greatand interesting special effects that made sense when they were used.Even the way the actors moved when they were doing magic was very good(for some reason the wand-waving in Harry Potter sometimes reminds meof people using a flyswatter or shaking a bug off a stick, that didn'thappen in this film). So no, this isn't some classic of cinema, it is what it is and is a bitthin here and there, but it's also quite good for a "magical romp" andis in no way a bad film or a waste of money. I could have done withoutthe occasional background songs which seemed designed to emphasizeromantic angst or appeal to young teenagers, but that was bearable. Isaw this at an early evening show and there were not many people in thetheater, but we all laughed and there was applause at the end, and weleft the theater smiling. Personally I think the critics panning thisare full of BS or are trying to prove what intellectuals they are. Inthe meantime see this with your family or take your friends, and thengo out and get some ice cream and sit outside and enjoy summer. Hopethey make a sequel, too.

This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Wow, some really "thoughtful" reviews on this movie from wanna-be film critic adults. Reviews that call it unoriginal, uninspired, convoluted plot, shallow acting...IT IS A KIDS MOVIE YOU TWITS! Get a life! Here, I'll give you my 7-year old's review:"That was AWESOME, can we watch it again??"He's watched it four times so far. That's eight hours of uninterrupted time with my wife. Holy cow has this movie paid for itself. If you have any child left inside, you can appreciate the movie too. Though I will say the main protagonist is pretty whiny. Even my whiny seven-year old called him that.

It's sad to see the current state of Nicolas Cage's once-promisingcareer stuck in Jerry Bruckheimer's series of bombastic blockbusterslike this uninspired 2010 Disney fantasy adventure. One wonders if theactor's current financial woes have forced him to make heavilycommercial choices at the expense of worthwhile projects like hisOscar-winning turn in Mike Figgis' 1995 "Leaving Las Vegas" or SpikeJonze's 2002 "Adaptation". Apparently, Cage is the one responsible forthe concept behind this movie based only tangentially on the famousMickey Mouse sequence in the 1940 animated classic, "Fantasia". Thereis a weak homage to the earlier film with a series of uncooperative wetmops, but the rest of the story is calculated, hokey Arthurian legend, the patchwork result of three credited scriptwriters, Matt Lopez, DougMiro, and Carlo Bernard, who play strictly by the cliché guidebook. The convoluted plot, such as it is, focuses on one of Merlin'sapprentices, the noble Balthazar Blake, who must fight to save mankindfrom the evil machinations of Horvath, who of course, wants to destroyit. It's a grudge match that starts in 740 AD when Balthazar's lady,Veronica, gets stuck in a nesting doll called a grimhold with themalevolent Morgana le Fay. The action moves forward to Manhattan at themillennium where ten-year-old Dave Stutler meets the ageless Balthazarin an antique store. Complications ensue, as Horvath shows up and bothmythical characters get locked into a vase for ten years. The storymoves forward again to current-day New York with Balthazar finallyfreed and Veronica's liberation dependent on the discovery of anenchanted being called the Prime Merlinian. This turns out to be thenow-twenty-year old Dave, a NYU physics student who epitomizes puregeekdom. Meanwhile, Morgana plans to gather an evil army to destroy theworld when she gets freed. Dave also has a love interest in a comelystudent named Becky who has been his crush for the past decade. As elaborate as the special effects are, they strike me asstandard-issue and at times downright cynical with very little of a wowfactor. The film is at its best only when Cage and Alfred Molina asHorvath are trying to outwit each other with competing feats of screenmagic. It's a credit to both seasoned actors that neither embarrasseshimself too badly in the superficial roles they accepted here. The samecannot be said for Jay Baruchel ("Knocked Up") who plays Dave as anexcessive case study in constant awkwardness. The women fare even worsewith Monica Bellucci and Alice Krige in barely-there roles as Veronicaand Morgana, respectively. Teresa Palmer nicely underplays Becky, thegirl of Dave's dreams, although her character's role in the climax isabsurdly contrived. Leaden direction from Jon Turteltaub does little tooffset the manipulative nature of this Disney-merchandise extravaganza, which by the end, leaves very little impact. In fact, I'm havingtrouble remembering it now.

i am 20 years old and i am a movie fanatic it doesn't matter if it's aold movie from the 50's in black in white i will watch it and enjoy itbut lately Hollywood has tried to put so much cgi effects in everymovie that comes out that it takes away from the movie, this movie isone of those movies, the story does call for cgi but not every scenecalls for it, if some of todays directors would study some oldertechniques and tricks from some of the greatest films like RichardDonner's (The Goonies) and John Carpender's (Big Trouble In LittleChina) and Steven Spielberg's (E.T) and incorporate todays cgi for thebig scenes and the littler scenes use your imagination like theseclassics then maybe some of the magic people felt in these movies youcould fill again, now iam not saying this is a bad movie Nicolas Cageis wounder full in his role as sorcerer Balthazar Blake and AlfredMolina is a menacing bad guy, but not as menacing as doc ock in SamRamie's (Spiderman 2) but for a Disney movie he is menacing enough. theonly complaint besides the cgi is it being pg i know it is a Disneymovie but still i think they tried to edit it for a preteen crowd likethe same thing for Jon Turteltaub's (National Treasure) both this andNational Treasure had a chance of being great action movies if they hadonly put more action in them or had not edit the action out. all in alli give it a 7 out of 10 so if you have kids, wife or a girlfriend withnothing to do on the weekend than this movie is perfect for you but ifyou are going alone i would suggest skipping this until it comes out onbluray and either go see Christopher Nolan's (Inception) or RobertRodriguez's (Predators).

This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo+Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Well, it's the best Disney movie in a while. I'd say the Blu-ray made it better, but I'd be lying. Ultimately, the ending is what prevented a 5-star rating.

This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (DVD) Upon reading some of the other reviews, especially the "1 star" reviews that say about the main character Dave (Jay Baruchel) being whiny and that the story is not believable. I feel that Jay did a wonderful job in portraying this character. He is supposed to be whiny and "stupid" as some say. In this particular story, he is being pulled unwillingly into a world that not many people believe in. It's against his logic. He's going to have trouble believing and learning because he finds it hard to believe. Being a physics student, he wants to look for a scientific explanation for what's happening to him. He's in a fantasy realm, so to speak. I think the casting was done very well. I know Nicolas Cage looked rough in the movie, however, if you were supposed to portray someone that old, you would have to look a bit rough yourself. This was a great FANTASY movie. You can't expect a fantasy movie to be believable. They did a great job with this movie and I do recommend it to those who actually like fantasy movies. I do not recommend this movie that are highly skeptical of such movies.

The special effects looked interesting in the first couple of scenes with people throwing fireballs, lightning, and remotely moving things. Then they became repetitive and boring. To me, the sorcerer's magic looked very limited. The plot was thin. It's understandable because it's meant for kids. There were a couple of scenes with funny dialogues. That's the only good things about this movie.
30 April 2012
the storyline is old hat, there are big gaps in continuity, the editing isn't as good as it should be and Nicholas Cage is dreadful but not as dreadful as the nerdy guy who plays the lead or the blonde actress who needs remedial acting lessons. I felt bad that Alfred Molina had to sink so low...his evil shines and he steals every scene from Nicholas Cage who doesn't even bother to phone in his performance.
30 April 2012
Nicholas Cage provides a unique perspective for this role and was nicely cast. The action is good and the story enjoyable. Good for the family.

The movie starts in 740 AD as Merlin and his 3 apprentices battle the evil Morgana LeFey. (It is always the French.) One of the apprentices becomes a traitor and joins Morganna. As it turns out, Merlin dies, one apprentice lives (Nicolas Cage) and the rest are imprisoned in what looks like Russian dolls. Cage has Merlin's ring and seeks out the Prime Millenia who will one day destroy the evil Morgana who is trapped in a doll. We now flash ahead to the year 2000 when 10 year old Dave, in search of a note floating in the wind, happens upon an antique shop where Cage (Balthazar Blake) lives. Cage gives Dave Merlin's ring and discovers that Dave is the one he has been searching for. Through a freak series of events Balthazar and a newly released evil sorcerer are entrapped in a vase for the next decade. We now flash ahead to 2010 where Dave is in college and works with Tesla Coils and has re-discovered Becky, a girl he liked in the fourth grade. Convinced that the odd going-ons of 10 years ago was due to a sugar imbalance, Dave suddenly comes face to face with those sorcerers from a decade ago. Dave agrees to become a sorcerer and save the world, all the time while trying to date Becky. All of the actors did a swell job, except for the main character of Jay Baruchel, who at times reminded me of a young Kramer. He is geeky, socially inept and bushy. The character was overdone to a point of being annoying. There were some clever scenes, mostly copied from other movies such as Star Wars, Fantasia, and Indian Jones. The movie is worth a view if you have children. The movie was humorous and only mildly terrifying at times.

This is one of my husband's all time favorite movies, and he is super picky. We've watched it once a month since it was released. Of course it helps that we both love most Nicholas Cage films. We had it on DVD, but recently bought it on Blu-Ray. It's like we bought a whole new movie. It's amazing the things we pick up with the blu-ray over the DVD.The story line is easy enough to follow, but it takes a few times to see all the subtleties in the plot. Cage was excellent in his role, but we both thought the apprentice could have been cast better, especially since he had the lead role. It's a bit dark in a few places making it inappropriate for children, but it isn't overly violent. It's nice to find a movie that isn't overrun with sex and foul language, thank you Disney!

This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (DVD) I got this movie with the full expectation that it would be terrible. But it wasn't! (Last Airbender was -- what the heck happened to M.Knight?)... Anyway, The Sorcerer's Apprentice was fun and entertaining and Nic Cage is only slightly annoying. There are some great action sequences, especially those involving mirrors.

As the title says.i watched this film with my family one Saturday because it was on SkyMovies and it looked like it might be good.We sat there watching it, but that was it. The effects were good, butthat was the only thing good about it. The main characters got on mynerves, The story was OK but not great.I was expecting something better, I am a huge fan of the Fantasy genre, even if Fantasy and magic and everything gets dragged into real-lifesurroundings, only with magic powers or a few monsters to allowing itto be classed as 'Fantasy'.I've watched the Percy Jackson film on Sky Movies, and I nearly enjoyedit as much as I enjoyed the book series. If there are books of this, Iwon't bother reading them, the film was bad enough. I say that, I admitI made it to the end without shooting myself in the head. It wasn't sobad I felt I had to switch it off before my head exploded with puttingup with the annoying characters for about 2 hours, I could sit thereand watch the whole thing. Not watch it happily or entertained, I couldjust... watch it, feeling indifferent. It's not good, not bad...Personally I'd only say watching this if there's nothing else on TV.Don't waste your money on a DVD, it's really not worth it. Only watchit if you're bored and there's absolutely nothing to do.Doing chores and cleaning are more fun than watching this.

Another solid hit from Disney. Everything you would want in a fantasy adventure. Great story, directing, acting, music, and special effects. This should entertain the whole family. Nicholas Cage does a great job as Merlin's apprentice that has looked for a thousand years to find his own apprentice, capably played by Dave Baruchel (Is it me or does he make you think of a young Christian Slater?). Most the action takes place in the streets of current day New York City. I really felt comfortable with this one, it never goes over the top or out of bounds of believeable fantasy. Not heavy handed or brutal like far to many movies at this time. Disney needs to receive a pat on the back for a movie Walt Disney would be proud to release. Something that has been lacking in to many of Disney's films of late. It doesn't make you put your palm over your face and say "What were they thinking?". If you enjoyed this, be sure to catch Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.CA Luster
