When the group is commissioned by the mysterious Mr. Church to assassinate the merciless dictator of a small South American island, Barney and Lee head to the remote locale to scout out their opposition. Once there, they meet with local rebel Sandra and discover the true nature of the conflict engulfing the city. When they escape the island and Sandra stays behind, Ross must choose to either walk away and save his own life - or attempt a suicidal rescue mission that might just save his soul.

oh this was just fun. And some moments I just like seeing again. A bunch of old guys (and some not that old) behaving like they are 10-30 years younger. Fun, don't ask too many questions, get the popcorn...sigh...More of a rental though.

What separates The Expendables from other action films that revolvearound a team working together (The Losers, Red, G.I Joe) and what alsomakes it better is the cast. While there are always other actors whocould have been included, the film has a very strong cast who all playoff one another well, that you can't help but enjoy the film because itknows that it is to entertain.Sometimes films aim for just that and fail because they don't have theright ingredients but it is clear that Sylvester Stallone knows how tocraft an action film. While his direction is not perfect, the story iswell told and paced appropriately; its simple but is fun to watch. The cast include Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, DolphLudgren, Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts. All of whom are good in theirroles and when the action kicks up, the film is blast. While there arecertainly better action films to be found with better stories, developed characters and jaw-dropping action sequences, The Expendablesis easy watch and will appeal to a wider audience. Its not perfect, you can tell just from watching the trailer, but it isfar better than what some critics make it out to be. Get a group offriends together to watch this and you have your evening made. This isentertaining from start to finish. Its everything it should be.

This review is from: The Expendables (Amazon Instant Video) The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)This movie is the mother of all action movies, non-stop action, violence and everything else all wrapped into one! A must see!!!

Remember when you went without something you really loved for a longtime? Either it was going to a special place for a vacation, orvisiting an old friend? Eating a special dinner made for you by yourmother? This is exactly the kind of film that "The Expendables" was.An original story, great characters, lots of intense action and greatone liners! This is something people haven't seen for a VERY long time. The story revolves around a group of mercenaries who are hired by theCIA to infiltrate and kill off a dictator of a small island nation.Ross (Stallone) is leading the team, and finds himself at a crossroadsbetween doing a job for the money, and doing the job because it's theright thing to do. All the other actors, Statham, Li, Crews, Couture,Lundgren get great screen time and are amazing. Cameo appearances aswell which are spoiled by the trailer still have their surprises andalso are fantastic. For far too long movie goers have been feed a diet of CGI, Fast Food"Dramatic" Action flicks dumbed down to "PG-13" that haven't had thepunch or drive that this film had. Certainly not for everyone, this isa real throwback to the days of action for the sake of action. It alsohas a very simple but complicated story which makes each of thecharacters more real. Each of the actors in this film also has their "moment" which alsomakes for a great film. The jokes are subtle but effective, and thecharacters all bring something new and different to the story. Themotivations while simple are very human. This film makes great use ofeach of them and they really compliment each other nicely. And then there are the effects...THANK GOD not much CGI! Or at theleast so little I couldn't tell what was or wasn't. There are a lot ofgreat fights, great explosions and hardcore adrenaline pumping action!I really felt like a kid again seeing "Commando" for the first time.Let's hope that the future holds more action films of this sort. Greatfilm...GO SEE IT...Go buy it on DVD or blue ray!

Remember back in the day when action movies were all the rage? Backwhen Ahnold could flip a car over, spit in a Predator's face, and uttera monotone one-liner to hapless victims before ripping their heartsout. When Sylvester Stallone could sputter some really macho wordsbefore blowing away cannibals and punching the crud out of pro boxers. What do we have these days? The action genre is still alive and wellwith Jet Li and Jason Statham both pulling mad Kung-Fu moves, withwrestlers like Stone Cold Steve Austin smashing their way to the bigscreens, and with Mickey Rourke taking on Iron Man.Much like any number of big action films, "The Expendables" offers amassive dose of wicked attitude and heart-throbbing action, completewith big explosions, wild gunfights, super-fast martial arts, gnarlyknife-fights, careening vehicles, and loads of fake blood. Whetherlooking at it as a touch of classic action-movie nostalgia or anexercise in modern action choreography, the film entertains all theway. The film has probably the biggest manliest cast since "The MagnificentSeven," with the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li,Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Dolph Lundgren joining forces to kickbutt. Also look out for a few action-star cameos! I can't say that thechemistry between all these characters really works, but one can't helpbut to appreciate the loosely hobbled together teamwork they strivefor. Collectively, they embody a style and spirit that seems like aform of distinctively all-American heroism. All that being said, it's still not a great film by any means. The goodnews is that the photography is generally solid and satisfying; actionscenes do look good. The production value is stylish and slick, withdecent set-pieces and entire arsenals of cool weaponry. But the filmdoes fall short with its writing and its story/character development. It's as brainless and irreverent as one can expect from an action film(after all, it's not like the stories for "Under Siege," "Bloodsport,""The Specialist," "The Condemned," "The Transporter," etc etc etc wereever top-notch either). You can also expect plenty of absurd andunrealistic moments.Recommended for action junkies only.3.5/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 2.5/5, film: 3.5/5)

Wow, what a horrible movie..........yeah I liked most of the actors in this movie but together they are horrible. I enjoyed all of these actors growing up but something happened when they put all of them in the same movie. I do not know how better else to describe this movie...........when it ended I just blinked and thought of what else I could have been doing.

One of the worst films I've seen lately. It was actually painful towatch!I didn't expect Oscar performance or plot of course. This is an actionmovie. But it's so ridiculous, it could have been easily made into anaction movie spoof! The dialogue was so bad it would have been betterto have all the clichés in the book instead of the dialogue. Theperformance was extremely bad. It's like they have been doing theirbest to overact! Bruce Willis managed to be quite awful in 4 lines ofdialogue. In short, the movie seems like Stalone's way of proving all the badthings critics said about him, and all of his friends.

Before you read this comment do note that I thought The Expendablesdelivered amazing action sequences. However, one thing I noticed isthat at times the script was very dull and a lot of lines seemed sobland and childish. Only some, however there were some cool lines, butothers just felt sort of kiddie. Also, I felt as though the movie wasrushed. Just as soon as the plot really begins to build up and makesomething of itself we are then told by Sly, that they have 23 minutesto shut the place down. Where did that come from? Why not continue togo slightly more in depth with the plot and really build something thatwill later be annihilated later. With all of the big names, the actiondefinitely holds its own and really does deliver it's promise.

Well first thing I enjoyed this movie but I have to say that both of myfriends who I went with did not recognise a few of the stars. RandyCouture and Gary Daniels (who is wasted) and also I had to explainSteve Austins credentials. There is homage paid to everything from Rambo to cobra in this movie aswell as a little joke for Arnold and you know the surname. Essentiallya mercenary team who do what mercenaries do for money, the leaderdecides to save a girl who he falls for and you can work out the restof the movie from there. I still love the way that Dolph Lundgren isportrayed as a meat-head but has a degree in engineering (I think) anamazing IQ and was also captain of his nations Karate Team (I know heis at least a 2nd Dan now, please somebody correct me if I am wrong). My main and only problems with this movie are observations that myfriend madeNobody got seriously injured (for the expendables) and the cameraangles for the hand to hand combat scenes were all over the place.I have to agree the guys in this movie do not need silly camera anglesto look good. A good movie overall but definitely for the action andmartial art geek like me who know all of their film stars.

This review is from: The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Even with an OS upgrade this blu ray wont play on my panasonic blu ray machine. These studios keep tinkering with the format and you never know what will play or not.Only the sony ps3 is updated enough to keep up. Other machjines watch out! This gets old.

Sylvester Stallone does an amazing job. totally recommended for any action/adventure fans.Sly you are trully an artist and an amazing Film Maker :) Great Job.

For those people who grew up on such movies of Showdown in LittleChina, Tango and Cash, and the Rocky series; they are bbbbaccccckkk! Finally, a movie that brings all of the best elements of the '80saction movies. To the actors over the age of 40 - welcome back! To the actors underthe age of 40 - welcome to the vaulted halls of the action movie gods. Please be gracious to those who came before you and please rememberyour fans along the way.I loved this movie. I somehow forgot that Dolph Lundgren actually knewhow to act. Seeing Arnold, Sly, and Bruce in the same scene was worththe price of admission. I will be going back to see it again before itleaves the theaters! Worth the weight, but please do not make me waitanother 25 years for the next one.

People going to see this film should not go with an expectation of agreat script/ plot, but instead just go and enjoy it for what it is.Stallone has put together a great ensemble cast of action heroes pastand present. There are some amazing scenes in this movie that i willremember for a long time.Jason Stathem really shines in this film and has great on screenchemistry with Stallone. Stallone and Rourke work well together, butother members of the cast could have been put to better us.I feel that this film, accompanied by Rambo has shown that Stallone hasdeveloped a new, more ''gory'' type of action film. This film is notafraid to show its audience what happens when someone gets shot closerange, it doesn't sugarcoat it like previous action films.Great film, great action, great experience.

It's been a while since I've written a review, because generally, whenI come to IMDb it's for good advice. Anything below a 5, I don't watch, coz life's too short. Less than a 7, then it depends on my mood. But itreally gets to me when movies like this and Star Wars (the new crap)get overrated by the fanboys, hence this review.First up: the movie isn't too lame, it's watchable. What you shouldn'texpect is a classic. Liked Universal Soldier, Rambo, Predator, DieHard? Watch them again and wait for this DVD. My main beef is the plot there isn't one. It's like the scriptwriters went on strike again, soStallone went to a random movie generator website.Random island, random bad ass, random chicks, random fights. There arethe in-jokes, one liners, cameos galore, but somehow you can't feelanything for the characters. Best actor goes to Mickey, who was theonly actor who remembered to act. I tried to ignore all this, but thenthey have to make the violence cartoonish? Braveheart had betterfights, so this was either an effects fail or a cheese win.

This movie basically combines everything you can think of from everypopular 80s action movie, including all the action stars and cheesylines. This movie was written more like a comedy than action movie. It's definitely not to be taken seriously. Sly Stallion is the leaderand he meets with Bruce Willis and Arnold Swartz. about a new mission. He takes the mission over Arnold, whom I think mentioned somethingabout him being in the jungle(Rambo, get it). They go to this islandwhom has been overtaken by an evil general and his American drug-lord.So, Sly must save the general's daughter, put an end to the general, and then give the drug-lord what he deserves. And he gets help from allthe notables along the way, mainly Jason Staham and Jet Li. And evenMickey Rourke gets thrown as the old guy whom can get all the 20 yearolds.FINAL VERDICT: It's some what funny and entertaining enough to checkout.

Sly hits another homerun!!! The action in the expendables was over the top, dialog was bearable, and the cast far from EXPENDABLE!!! The best action movie ive seen in a while. It certaintly wont win any oscars, but it was enjoyable and mindless fun. Besides most movies that win are pretty boring and dumb. I found the extras on the blu-ray very interesting and it helped add a whole new appreciation for how they make a "real" action movie. They showed the toll shooting a action movie with real people can do to the body, Not like some movies with computerized action, ummmm Avatar, or Transformers ring a bell. The extras really made this a must have. Definitley my favorite movie in a long time, love the cast as always and cant wait for the sequel!!!

"Choose Your Weapon" Immediately upon seeing the first posters and advertisements for thisfilm last year I had my mind made up - I was going to avoid it like theplague. An all-star action cast that includes Sylvester Stallone, JasonStatham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austen, MickeyRourke and small cameo appearances from Arnold Schwarzenegger and BruceWillis was never going to be up my alley, as I have a profound andwell-expressed hatred for mindless action films that use gratuitousover-the-top macho and unrealistic violence. And to top it off, when Isaw that the mastermind behind the film was - and who was inevitablyalways going to be the ringleader of this steroid-fuelled macho circus- Sylvester Stallone, I almost vomited. The brainless tagline that I'vequoted above pretty much summed up for me what the movie was going tobe about.I'll try and explain, or assemble rather, the apparent and redolentplot: basically, or what I gathered, a team of mercenaries headed byStallone travel to South America on a mission to overthrow some corruptdictator. A possible throwback to the action movies of the 80's (Theywere over-the-top and camp, but THEY were good) "The Expendables" I'msure disappointed many fans of this genre. I've nothing againstviolence in films, in fact, most of my favourite films of all time arewhat some people could consider dark and extremely violent ("Platoon","Apocalypse Now" and "Trainspotting" to name a very small few - "FirstBlood", the pioneer of the Rambo series, is also one of my all-timefavourites) and one of my favourite genres is the slasher genre withentries such as the "Saw" films, "A Nightmare on Elm Street", and Ihave seen and rated a 10/10 the notorious "Cannibal Holocaust".Stallone looks awful. I'd go as far as to compare him to a walkingcorpse, because that's what he resembles as well as sounds like. It'swhat the steroids or whatever, as well as some help from mother nature, has done to him over the years. He's a far cry from his glory days inthe brilliant "Rocky" and Rambo films. When there isn't action,Stallone tries to fill these momentary gaps with some, what I'm suresome people would consider, macho humour. Maybe it's the sense ofhumour I've got (Usually I'll laugh at the most inappropriate things)but I found it all to be irritating and pathetic. Violence is something that fascinates us as human beings. It's just thekind of species we are. But - and I'm not looking to offend lovers ofthis movie - mindless garbage like this with unrealistic situations andglorified violence make me want to vomit and hurl every copy of themovie into the sun, plainly just for their stupidity and mind-numbingand brain-deadening affects. "The Expendables" essentially containsmany scenes of combat, and any veteran or soldier will tell you, thatcombat in war or any other related situation is not glorious and yournever as cooled or relaxed as the burnt-out steroid heads are in this.

While I wasn't a die-hard '80s action movie fan during that decade, forsome reason I was just dying to watch this new Sylvester Stalloneaction film especially for two other big stars of that genre and decademaking cameo appearances alongside him for the first time here. Thebanter between those three are quite hilarious especially about the onewho's currently running a certain state. Anyway, while there'ssomething of a compelling story, it's mainly the action sequences thatone is hungry for and while it does go a bit over-the-top at the end,it delivers non-stop thrills in spades! And what a fine supporting castthat's provided for here: Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, "StoneCold" Steve Austin (check the fight he has with Stallone), MickeyRourke, Eric Roberts (how ironic he's in a movie that's openingopposite his sister Julia's more softer drama Eat Pray Love), DolphLundgren (remember him as Drago in Stallone's Rocky IV?), David Zayasas General Garza, and Giselle Itie as his daughter Sandra. I think I'vesaid enough so I'll just say that I highly recommend The Expendablesfor a great turn-off-your-brain fun!
