The best of the Step Up series!

I liked this one better than the first two Step Up movies! The story is repetitive basically a bunch of kids need money and they enter a contest and so it goes but the dancing in this is what impressed me, not the story. I was happy to see "Moose" reprise his role. He's super cute! The main character (the guy on the cover) seemed to disappear whenever the real dancing happened which I thought was funny but the dance numbers were off the chain! The dancer that did the robot in the first part of the film was phenomanal. I've never seen someone move just like a robot like that! They also did a dance in water which was just like the second movie but it was a great dance sequence anyway. The final dance number was also outstanding with the lighted suits they were wearing. It was amazing! I found myself rewinding this movie to see the dance sequences again and again! I highly recommend this if you like dance movies.

Surprisingly Good

First off, I never would have seen this movie if I wasn't required toat work. It was shown as a teen movie program at the library I work at.I had a really enjoyable time watching it though. Sure, the script waswritten by a 12 year old (or at least played like it did), you couldsee the "twist" coming from a mile a way, and the acting was on parwith those of a porno, but it was still a very enjoyable movie. Thedance scenes were incredible. I couldn't imagine being able to move mybody the way they could but really wished I could have. The maincharacters Luke and Moose aren't completely awful at acting. Nataliewas fine too to be honest. I don't see any Oscars in their future, butwith dance moves like theirs, who needs it? I'm not a dancer myself andI haven't seen the other two Step Up movies, but if it's anything likethis one, I may need to netflix them. I left wanting to dance andthat's probably the best you can hope for with a dance movie.

Impressive Dance Sequences Make Up For Weak Everything Else

The Step Up brand has quickly become the big name in dance movies. Thefirst two were surprise hits, but with all the new dance movies and TVshows out in recent year, does Step Up offer anything new to crowdedgenre? After watching Step Up 3D, I felt divided, at times it looked mediocre, yet other moments looked absolutely stunning. The 3D, unlike in othermovies is actually good and enhances the movie. As, shown in themarketing, the movie is full of big spectacular dance sequences thatuse 3D very well, and creates some moments, where the audience are inawe of what is happening on-screen, even with all the dance TV showsand other movies Step Up offers some genuinely amazing moments.Leaving the spectacle aside, the film is very weak in the acting andwriting departments. The dialogue is terrible and the storyline is ageneric copy and paste from other films in the genre. Director Jon Chu,who directed the last film (Step Up 2: The Streets), thankfully knowsthis and makes sure to keep the character development and expositionscenes to a strict minimum. The movie never really loses its pace andgoes from dance sequence to dance sequence. Many moviegoers may thinkthis is lazy(and it is), but fans of the genre will surely love it.This is generally The Fast and The Furious of dance movies, in that ithas what fans want, but everyone else could care less. But unlike thelast installment in The Fast and The Furious series, where the mainattraction(the races) were poorly done, CGI race sequences. Step Up 3D,actually has real dancers, doing all the dance sequences with adds tothe already impressive spectacle on-screen.The film, like I mentioned suffers from some bad writing and genericplot. The film instantly becomes nearly unwatchable whenever thedancers take a break. The dance sequences may be thrilling high qualitymoments, expertly choreographed moments, but whenever the movie slowsdown to tell its story, it seems like a straight-to-DVD movie. Moose(Adam G. Sevani, who played the same role in the last movie) is nowstarting his first semester at NYU with his female BFF Camile (AlysonStoner). He's supposed to be studying engineering, but his fondness forstreet dancing might get in the way. That all you really have to know,to understand that it's the typical dance flick.Closing CommentsIf you liked the first two Step Up movies,or Fame or Stomp the Yard. You will like this as well. You get what you pay for, 3D dancesequences that jump out on-screen. Step Up 3D, does bring biggersequences that almost any modern dance movie, but if you want decentcharacters and storytelling that is not in the price of admission, Justsit back, watch the amazing dances sequences and don't think too much.

Just Plain Bad

Pure Trash. People who liked this film shouldn't even go see movies. You're thereason why crap like this makes tons of money while other films thatactually have meaning and an interesting story filled with actuallywell written characters suffer at the box office. Anyone who liked thishas no right to watch movies. At all. I mean I get a movie beingentertaining but it should entertain through the story andcharacters....not through a crappy plot with horrible acting and"flashy" dance moves...and the 3D was just a cheap attempt to get morecash. Screw this movie and anyone who liked it.

Hated it.

In my opinion, the movie was badly acted, had a terrible cliche plot, and the dancing was so overboard it was silly. One of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Hip Hop at its best

WOW @ 3D

This review is from: Step Up 3 (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) 3D are very excellent, and my family and friends are saying wow all the time while they watch this 3D movie. Every dancers are pop out from the screen and you can feel you are there. Story line is so-so as average movie though, But 3D effect makes this movie perfect. This is the perfect 3D disc in my several 3D movie collections. Get it while it is $19.40. Best purchase ever i have made :)

Great, But..

Great story, some poor acting by the "bad guys" and the 3-D is barely par. However, great movie overall.. makes me want to learn to dance!

Very Hot, Very Kinetic

I've never seen a movie propelled by break dancing until thisafternoon. I saw it in a large suburban mall multiplex anchored in thecorn belt way west of the Hudson River and 5 miles from the closestFred Astaire Dance School. Wow! Step Up 3D (3D version) is visuallykinetic, great fun and spirited as it follows an iconic, time-testedand, to some, tired formulaic story. Like Astaire's song and dance movies from the 1930's through the1950's, one knows that everything will turn out well before the endcredits but in Astaire's movies and this Jon Chu film, its really abouttraveling - about the trip not the destination - as the film un spoolsscenes with very appealing actors, spectacular dancing, savvy camerawork, smart editing and a corny script. But its cathartic corn, atleast to those of us who wouldn't ordinarily see a street dance flick. When co-leads Alyson Stoner and Adam Savani's dweeb characters relateto one another as NYU frosh, they are believable even in the sillinessof the plot structure. So too with the characters played by otherco-leads Rick Malambi and Sharni Vinson. The 3D treatment provides Step Up 3D with distorted visual energy and Idug it, I dug it a lot over and over again. Even as the spectacular endcredits seem to be winding down, Chu gives us a single guy on a smallpart of a wide screen with lots of hand choreography. The camera slowlytrucks towards him as the credits scroll up on the right side. His handand head moves and the 3D camera work are mesmerizing in a "less ismore" kind of way.I saw this movie on a perfectly beautiful Sunday afternoon because filmreviewers Michael Phillips and A.0. Scott told viewers to see it onwhat is the very last edition of syndicated television's "At theMovies". Thumbs up to you boys, and to Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel,Richard Roeper and the guest critics. Your always engaging show, too,was about the journey.

Step Up 3D: Electric Boogaloo

Dancing movies are hilarious. Stop taking them seriously. People watchbad horror movies all the time and laugh their asses off, yet theydon't seem to understand that they can, and should, do the same thingwith dance. Step Up 2 the Streets is absolutely hilarious. Step Up 3Djust takes the dancing and bland story of Step Up 2, mixes it with theplot of Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo and sprinkles a bit of 3D acidinto the mix. Entire theatres should be breaking out into uproariouslaughter, both during and in between the dance scenes. This is a comedic gold mine.If you want to watch it for good dancing, then you get that too, as abonus. All of these 1/10 reviewers need to grow a sense of humour. Thismovie is only boring for a few minutes. The rest is just epic.9.5/10 rounded up to a 10.Learn to have fun. You'll live longer.

AMAZING 3D AND DANCING! GREAT COLOR AND BRIGHTNESS!

This review is from: Step Up 3 (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I bought this for the 3D. It's one of the best, if not the best 3D blu-ray that I've seen. It's right up there with "Open Season", which is a bit different because it's animated. It's definitely the best non-animated 3D blu-ray that I've seen. The acting and plot are almost non existent. The dancing is phenomenal though. I'm not even a big fan of dance, and just bought this to watch a non-animation 3D blu-ray besides some stupid documentary. The dancing is extremely entertaining though. You can tell the film was shot with 3D in mind. The setting is also perfect to showcase 3D. Since the film is based in New York the outside scenes offer incredible depth. Also, the brightness doesn't at all look too low as it does on many 3D blu-rays. I watched for a reduction in brightness the whole time and really didn't notice it at all. Ghosting also never seemed to appear. Both the outdoor and indoor scenes have a great level of brightness. The outdoor scene of Alyson Stoner and "Moose" dancing is an incredible showcase of 3D and the brightness and color palette are incredible. This 3D blu-ray is a must have in your collection. There are no special features in 3D, which was a little disappointing. The 3D quality of the film and the dancing made up for it though.

It's not drama; it's a fun movie, meant to be watched without being overly critical.

Movie Guy, I'm sorry but I have to disagree. Not every movie has'acting' and a 'story' in it. There's variety. This is just a funflick. You just have to broaden your mind. And a lot of movies are made on things that we watch on TV. That's thewhole point. The movie combines them all in a 1.5 hour package, adsmore style (if you'd like to put it that way) and story to it, makes itmore fun to watch. You can't apply the art-house mentality to everymovie out there. And dancing IS like a "mysterious force", and a "way of life whichleads you into wisdom". A lot of people believe in this. Just like onewould believe in the power of music or art and or any other aestheticfield. I'm not a dancer, but I'm open to these concepts. The movie hascommercialized all these, which is obvious, since this is a mainstreammovie. My judgment: The movie is exciting, but the plot could have beensmarter.

Terrible movie, beautiful 3D.

This review is from: Step Up 3 (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I sat down to watch this with my wife for the 3D. The 3D was SO amazing that I didn't even notice how terrible the movie was until near the end.

Spectacular Choreography with Soul. An Inspiring Double-Major.

If urban street style dancing is exactly what you are looking for, youwill be overwhelmed by its dance sequences that are full of vigour andattitude. Aiming to inspire the younger generation, Step Up 3 hits theright spot with its remarkable dance choreography that rendershigh-spirit sentiments among audience in recommended 3D format.Let's face it, there is not much act and substantial plot in thisproject. But with a whole lot of dance action. A film with dance as itssoul (where it shines in exuberance) with a sub-plot to the characters'inner struggle with various focus in life to illustrate how one pursuesdreams amidst life challenges. In the case of Moose, it is hisengineering degree and best (girl) friend, Camille, versus his pursuitof dance. While for the other leading character Luke, it is his dilemmabetween his talent (film-making) and passion (dancing).Step Up 3D depicts Luke's situation further as it actually fusesdancing with film-making, by featuring urban street dance in a featurefilm. Undoubtedly, this is how Step Up 3D wins hands down as aconvincing dance genre. Featuring documentary style footage of hisdance crew citing inspirations, this brings a whole new dimension tothe purpose and origins of street dance."Why do you like to dance?", questions the film.In amazement, the characters experiment and explore the underlyingtruth behind what's fueling them to engage street dance with suchrelentless determination. "People dance because dance can changethings. One move, can bring people together. One move, can make youbelieve like there's something more. One move, can set a wholegeneration free.", says Moose who cites Michael Jackson as one of thelegendary examples. This is what elevates Step Up 3D away from the first two installments, other than being in 3D.But wait, there's more. The most significant quality of this film definitely derives from thespectacular choreography by Jamal Sims and his team, performed by theon screen dancers and nicely captured by Cinematographer Ken Seng. Allunder the direction of Jon M. Cho. All of these goodness will be bestexperienced with the added third dimension to further reel you into thesilver screen, feeling as if you are witnessing the dance movesfirst-hand on scene.Make no mistake, as you will truly come to realise what an overwhelminggrand finale they have produced in the showdown between the House ofPirates and rivals House of Samurai. Dance supremacy transcends beyondskills and moves where it has truly attained a whole new level withscience and engineering (you'll have to see it for yourself). What a great example of achieving optimum results upon mergingacademics and leisure. As Moose manages a double major in engineering and dance, Step Up 3Dhas also delivered its double major in dance and soul in awe.

Like a superhero movie with Dance powers!

If you were turned off by Step Up, forget about it, the sequels are infinitely better. This movie is so good! One of the things that I love about it is that the dancers may be quirky or awkward in plot scenes, but when they'e dancing they are so powerful and confident, it's like they become superheroes (moose in particular).Step up 3 makes the right decision to cut down on plot and drama and let the dancing take the spotlight. Yes there is a story, but it's not bogged down by disapproving parents or stodgy ballet instructors. Everyone starts out as good dancers so there aren't any unnecessary montages of bad dancers fumbling around (though there are some great training sequences of everyone showing off). The conflicts are sometimes so ludicrous it's hilarious. The acting is fine, these are fantasy people who live in beautiful colorful world where conflicts are settled with dance battles in the bathroom, they're charming and happy go lucky and I wouldn't want it any other way.The dancing is amazing! There are so many styles and every dancer injects their own personality into it. The interactions between crews during battles were really interesting. They'll trade blows and react to each others moves and sometimes mock the other crews style. They really made an effort to resolve plot in the dancing instead of having plot and dancing separate. The choreography is stellar and the cinematography is significantly improved since Step Up 2. It's really bright and colorful and the contrast and framing allows for you to see all the intricacies of the choreography. I particularly appreciated that the dancing can be flirty without being sexual or vulgar.I just go through this movie with a huge grin on my face and the battles are great to watch over and over. I just can't get enough of this movie. The only complaint I have is that I would like to have a commentary or more special features with the director talking about his process. He obviously loves and knows dance, and he is pretty vocal on the internet so I was surprised that he didn't talk more on the features.
