Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is Amazing

I'm a harsh critic and I have to say that this movie is the best I've seen in a long time. It's in my top 2. Buy it, trust me.

Good Fun

If you are thinking about viewing this film, imagine if Richard andDanny Elfman's expressionistic film "Forbidden Zone" (1980) waseffectively blended with "Napoleon Dynamite"(2003), "Malice InWonderland" (2009), and "Sky High" (2005). If you liked any or all ofthose three films you should enjoy "Scott Pilgrim vs The World".American audiences have historically been highly resistant toexpressionism and it is interesting how that style is now finding anaudience in the gamer and comic book crowds, apparently computergenerated special effects have effectively kicked down the barriersthat have long kept us trapped in the realism style.I came to this film as a fan of Alison Pill and was not disappointed, she appears to be having a lot of fun playing a variation of MaryStuart Masterson's "Some Kind of Wonderful" (1987) character; althoughAlison gets to deadpan much funnier lines. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead should get some credit for putting herselfout there in some unconventional stuff like this and Tarantino's "DeathProof" (2007). It is rare for an actress to take these kind of chancesbut it is a good way to avoid type casting. My only complaint is that much of the $60Million budget does not seemto make it to the screen, the film would probably have worked better asa more minimalist production. The computer generated stuff simply hasno charm and you just want to fast forward through the silly fightsequences. Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Visual video game experience is great!

Movies turned video games have a tendency to suck a lot more than theyshould, though many of them do have great potential to be turned invideo games. Video games turned into movies have a tendency to suck aswell, but in a good way. I have no idea why, but more often than not, amovie adaptation of a video game manages to entertain me. As a result,I enjoyed Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time (though not being agreat film) and Doom (I rated Doom a 9.0 back when I was a snottylittle 12 year-old brat, but even today Doom can still manage toentertain me). When I first saw a trailer for this before the excellentToy Story 3 this summer, the first thing I said to myself was ''Damnthis is gonna suck'', and even when the first reviews, who were mainlyover positive, came out, I still wasn't interested in viewing thisfilm. But having rented this film just a few hours ago, and in factjust a few minutes after the viewing, I thought I might just write areview for it.I've never read a Scott Pilgrim comic before, so I can't exactly sayhow faithful the film is to the comic books. But from what I saw in themovie, the story was great. We've all seen this story before, of anordinary guy who is in love with a girl, but who must stand up to herboyfriend (usually two or three times the main character's size) inorder to win her heart. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World makes our hero, aneveryday normal guy (played by Cera, an actor I like very much), fallin love with crazy, colourful-haired Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But to gain her love, he must defeat her ''Seven evil x's'' (yes youread right. Not ex-boyfriends, just X's).Straight on you can say that the cast is perfect for this kind of film. It's really hard to see anybody else than Micheal Cera fill the shoesof Scott Pilgrim. He gives one of his most dynamic performances up todate, and he is definitely one of the good points of the film. MaryElizabeth Winstead is an actress I did not know very well (besides hersupporting role in ''Live Free or Die Hard''), but she also portrayedRamona quite beautifully. In fact all the actors in this film playtheir roles to the maximum without ever over acting, they just alwaysseem to have the right amount of character in their roles. This is a film that will probably appeal mostly to teenage boys (likeme) and their parents, who grew up during the NES generation. Back whenthe consoles only had a two-dimensional Mario character who would jumponce in a while to get a penny, or stomp an evil mushroom. Being 14years old (soon going on 15 :D), I am a person who, before buying hisfirst console at the age of 9 (a Nintendo Gamecube), played with hisdad's old NES. Even today, when I'm not on X-Box Live playing Madden,Call of Duty, NHL or a variety of other titles, I do plug out this oldNES and, believe it or not, I do have a lot of fun with it. Therefore, those who have already experienced the NES will be delighted by theamount of references to old consoles this film makes. Whether the maincharacter beats up bad guys and makes money out of it, or the openingUniversal logo shown in 2-D, this film makes the most of gamingreferences.Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) also takes comic-bookadaptation to a whole other level. This film has comic book adaptationwritten all over it, but that's mostly due to the references it makesto comic books when it is not referencing video games. The typical''BAM!'' shown when the character hits a baddie. The visual effectswere super, and though I'm not really a geek, I do have to say thatMary Elizabeth Winstead with her purple/blue/green hair was hot. Thoughsome of the gags fell flat on a few occasions, most of them broughtsmiles, chuckles and laughs to me and my 10 year old sister. The visualeffects were super. Definitely going to buy this one, and while thismight be a real turn down for some, geeks and parents who experiencedNES games and read many comic books during their youth should have agreat time watching this film.

Atari and Pop Rocks!

From the moment the Universal Studios Theme plays out Atari Style, youknow you're in for a wild ride! Scott Pilgrim v/s The World is a comicbook adaption unlike any other, featuring Michael Cera as theunassuming protagonist, the film takes a fresh look at baggage and thecurrent dating scene.Scott Pilgrim (Cera) plays a 22 year old who feels like it's quite anachievement to date a 17-year-old Girl. That's when he encounters Ramona Flowers (a cold and smoldering MaryElizabeth Winstead) and his world turns into one helluvaroller-coaster. All her evil Ex-es want a piece of him giving room forthe most entertaining fight sequences of all time.Scott battles his own past, her past, his issues, her issues, hisroom-mates issues and so much more, all while delivering killer riffson his bass guitar. With furious editing and fantastic special effects, Cera and Winsteadtransport us through a thoroughly entertaining relationship, ablysupported by the other characters that walk on and off throughout themovie most notably Kieran Culkin. The writing is spot on and the only disappointment is the climax whichseems a tad stretched out, but that's only because the rest of theflick passes by at breakneck speed drawing you in at all times.A special nod to Chris Evans who plays his cameo to perfection as doall the other evil entities! If you like Michael Cera, Comics orVideogames or if you just want to have a fun time, go watch.

Extremely flash

Few films have filled me with equal amounts of anticipation and dreadas Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The anticipation came from the marriageof an intriguing premise and a director that had shown immense promisethrough having a hand in some of the best comedy of the past 10 years. On the other hand, the over-the-top style and hipper-than-thou vibeslooked to be a double-edged sword that could bring the whole thingcrashing down in bright computer-generated flames.Let's get the plot out of the way - for those who haven't heardanything at all about this, the titular character is an unemployedmusician living in Toronto who ends up meeting the girl of his dreamsone night. As he gets involved with her, he discovers that she has ahell of a past - she's left behind "seven evil exes". For no adequatelyexplained (or particularly necessary) reason, they each come afterScott and engage him in ludicrously over-the-top battles. In betweenfights, Scott still has to deal with the various ups and downs of hisrelationship and how it affects the rest of his life.Right, let's move on the film proper - well, those feelings I mentionedin the first paragraph? By and large justified in both respects. On thegood side, stylistically the film is sublime. Despite having never readthe source comics, I still enjoyed the film's heavy-handed usage ofcomic-book conventions such as visible sound effects, split-screenpanels...the works. That's going without mentioning the copiousreferences to videogames, whether it's the subtle use of sounds fromother games or the blatant references to such things as getting livesor winning points. The visual effects are also top-notch, going aboveand beyond expectations with colourful clashes and blistering battles. If nothing else, Scott Pilgrim looks a million dollars. Now comes the bit where I follow up a paragraph full of earnest praisewith a little bit of honest criticism...while the film is greatvisually, I'm not really a fan of everything else about the film.Michael Cera does his usual "awkward goofiness" schtick, while most ofthe other cast deliver undemanding deadpan performances. On the otherhand, the hamminess of the exes comes close to making up for itit. While I don't deny that these different styles genuinely fit in theright sequences, sometimes it gels and sometimes it doesn't. The samegoes for some of the references that the film tries to jam in,especially one scene that parodies a certain popular sitcom that reallyisn't quite as funny as it should be. I could probably rattle off alist of the stuff that falls flat, but I'd probably have to list thestuff that didn't as well, so the non-action sequences are something ofa mixed bag for myself. If you're familiar with any of Wright's other work, this willdefinitely amuse you to one degree or another. If you're not, well, Idaresay all the promotional materials give you the right idea - it's afairly lightweight romantic comedy plot wrapped in a few layers ofunbelievable fantasy and cooked to a crisp. Ultimately it suffers fromone very extreme case of style over substance, but what a style it is.Definitely worth seeing in theatres, if nowhere else.

a nerds wet dream, good thing i downloaded it. NOT!

IMDb ratings can be tricky and when i saw this with an 8.0 rating withlike 50,000+ votes its pretty good for a comedy i thought and medownloading it free i kinda felt guilty but after seeing it now feelslike i wasted an hour downloading this instead i could have gone for adifferent movie, oh well.. my problem with this film is like nothingmattered..not the story not the characters there was nothing to likeabout the main character...um i mean characters...scott pilgrim scrawny armed with a funny looking bowl like haircutdating a hot chick as his exes troubles him and he suck at playing thebass guitar, LOLs. the girl he ends up with(obviously)heres theridiculous part and its the main story has seven evil exes and scotthas to defeat them one by one while the battles were bombarded withvisual effects and thats all there is to it. not that i have a problemwith all these effects and gimmicks it comes out as being original butabused as a result it gets really annoying a after a while. now afterhe defeats one of these exes they blow up! i mean that literally wooooolook at all the colors and they turn into coins...oh wait he justgained a thousand points for killing the guy yaay! wait what? what dahell is going on here?? does it even matter whether any of it makessense? and gaining 1up so now we know hes gonna die at some point anduse that credit. wtf...it felt like i was literally watching a nerds wet dream and all i gotfrom it was a chuckle or 2. a 5 out of 10.

Absolutely everything I expected, a cult classic on the way!

I was so lucky to get a ticket to the pre-screening of this movie on mybirthday, and from the first 5 seconds (the 8-bit Universal logo), Iknew I was in for an enjoyable ride. I had read the comic books, whichare great, so I (sorta) knew what I was going to see, and I got all myexpectations fulfilled. Though the movie itself looks and feels exactlylike a comic book, the movie takes different turns than the comic, forexample, all the battles in the movie are different. It's completelystuffed with geeky references, and is absolutely the funniest film I'veseen this year. Though I strongly recommend that you read the comicbefore seeing it, or else you might be completely lost. I can'tpossibly think of any director that would turn this comic into a bettermovie, Edgar Wright has just the amount of craziness needed. Overall, atotal nerd-gasm, if you read the comic, or if you're a geek looking fora pleasant afternoon, quit WoW, get off your lazy ass, and GO SEE SCOTTPILGRIM VS. THE WORLD! It's totally worth the money and time! (By theway, I'm not happy with this movie only placing 5th in the USA, thisshould(and can) be a cult classic on the way!)

If you don't get any fun out of watching this, you don't have a pulse...

This movie is fun. It's like a three ring cotton candy circus. It iscolorful, graphically intense and also has an underlying deepness to goalong with its humor and comic book action. I haven't personally read the graphic novel so I don't know how itcompares, but it is hard not to like this movie, unless you personallyhave a problem with Michael Cera or only want to watch "real" dramaslike the Blind Side and can't get your head around younger fare.I loved how the movie moved like a comic book, but not in the way SinCity, 300 or Watchman did, this one has a completely different feel.People laughed out several times at the jokes and even though I don'tlike action movies, the actions like people changing into coins andvideo game effects kept me interested. The only way I could describe it is if you put Ghost World and SomeKind of Wonderful in a blender and baked it, then sprinkled a copy ofJuxtapoz on it and frosted it with a Nintendo/Street Fighter glaze. Itreminded me of all these things. The acting was very good, so good infact, I wouldn't single out any of the actors, they were alloutstanding and I am glad a lot of the characters looked and acted likenormal kids and that made it more believable. OK, maybe a crazy Chineseschoolgirl and the hip, Gothic/indie girl are stereotypes at times, butat least they are stereotypes I want to see. And items like the "bassoff" and fighting the dragon twin DJs in one scene (great use offantasy in the picture) came off as original and fresh to me.If you can't find fun in this film, then you don't have a pulse. If youare gloomy going to see this, I am sure you'll feel like you rode aroller-coaster before you get out of the theater. And I recommendseeing this in a theater too and not wait for video, because I thinkthe constant graphics and jokes will be lost on a smaller scene or moveto fast to be enjoyed fully. Even though it is an adaptation of agraphic novel, I feel the idea of this film is original and given thestate of movies nowadays, originally and fun can be hard to find. Thishas both!

Best Movie Ever

First off, this is not my account. I'm using my dad's. (I'm 13)Anyway, I thought that the film looked so-so when I saw the trailer, but my dad was definitely not interested. I didn't get to see it in theaters. When it came out on DVD, he wouldn't let me rent it, thinking that it was stupid. Well, just a week ago, I saw the movie at a friend's house. I loved it. I got my mom to take me out to buy it. After I purchased it, I could not put it down. I've watched the movie seven times, the cast commentaries, the bloopers, and the deleted scenes. I've loved every minute of it. Be warned. If you have important business to do, such as school work, do that first. This movie is addictive.

25 April 2012

YES!

Let me just start by saying I love Michael Cera. And Jason Schwartzman. And Kieran Culkin. So this movie started off with some pretty high points for simply throwing them all together so their awesomeness may combine. I also just finished reading the whole series, so I was ready and raring to go! Now, in the movie they added quite a few things, they made the action scenes a lot longer during some of Scott's battles. It wasn't that bad but, meh, I could have done with less action and more Scott. One thing I missed from the comics to the big screen, is the epic battle in the mega reference library between Ramona and Knives. They just took it right out, which was a big disappointment to me. This movie on a whole was epic in it's own right. There are always going to be comparable differences between the book and the movie, but the difference between these two didn't make either and less awesome. If you like video games and comic books than this movie(and book series) is definitely right up your alley. Unless you like bad video games and boring comic books, in which case you are on your own. Sorry ;)

Visually Groundbreaking

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a curve-breaker in this era of sequels, franchises and remakes. Despite technological advancement and higher budgets, innovation is surprisingly rare in mainstream American cinema. Many films base their visual and thematic aesthetic off of formulaic tropes. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, while not particularly innocent in those terms, borrows elements from video gaming, nerd culture, music and experimental cinema to create a unique visual combination.Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is himself immersed in the culture he portrays in the film and creates a faithful and authentic presentation. Most of the credit, however, has to go to Director of Photography Bill Pope (The Matrix, Spider-Man 2), who outdoes even himself in creating a hyper-stylized, surreal visual environment. Also, much has to be said about the film's attention to detail. Covert references to Canadian products, bands, video games and computers are prevalent. There's always something new to discover with each viewing.Michael Cera's performance ranks among the best of his career (somewhere in between Arrested Development and Juno). He shows surprising versatility in the role and presents a wide range of emotions. Oscar-worthy, it is not. For an actor (almost unjustly) accused of being typecast, however, Cera does extremely well here, and definitely has the potential to silence a few skeptics. The villains, or "League of Evil Exes", run the gamut of "elitist" stereotypes and provide excellent foils for Scott throughout the plot. Highlights include ex-Superman Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram and Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, who both cram hilarious machismo into their performances. Furthermore, the opening fight scene, featuring Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, nearly steals the film with its unexpected stylistic twists. On the other end, the performances of Allison Pill and Ellen Wong (as Kim Pine and Knives Chau, respectively) create an interesting contrast and portray two entirely memorable, unique characters. The Blu-ray presentation, unsurprisingly, is as impressive as the film. Containing an extensive behind-the-scenes featurette, numerous outtakes, deleted scenes, animatics, on-set footage and four audio commentary tracks, there's enough here to enlighten and satisfy film nerds and curious moviegoers. The picture quality is nearly flawless and free of artifacts, compression and edge enhancement. Additionally, the default 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack provides excellent clarity, depth and channel separation. In terms of quality and extras, there are few Blu-rays on the market that compare. A superb release of a superb film.

Quietb-1 08 April 2012

Too much of a good thing.

Fresh, fun, forgettable. Not very PC, but Scott is a character that is fun to hang with.Unfortunately he has to defeat 7 evil X's. That's just too many.Written and directed by syndrome causes it to drag. Thanks for sparingus that final epic of epicness battle. With the exception of an early dance segment Cera shows his usuallimited range. The bands fun music eventually becomes an ear poundingassault. The movie has that not quite right look like it was shotdigitally. Different and entertaining for about 80 minutes too bad it runs 112.

Scott Pilgrim is here to make you sad and think about death and stuff!

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Simply one of the best movies ever released. If you are part of the "Nintendo" generation or just a lazy kid at heart, you will love this movie. Also, the Blu-ray is incredible. I would imagine they crammed each disc to the brim just to fit everything in there.

Davidhowlandfx 31 March 2012

Wonderful imaginative experience.

To start out, I'd like to say I am 21 years of age, grew up playingvideo games on the NES, and SNES, and still play games to this day. Igave you that information because this movie is very demographicallyfocused. This is not to say it isn't appealing to all ages, but to getthe full experience you need to have played Zelda, Street Fighter, andMario and been entertained by them. The whole film is a satire of high-school type drama and immaturity. Those who claim they didn't like themovie failed to see the satire and humor in the briefly disappointmentand the randomness in the dialog. The acting was way over the top butagain, it is a satire meant to be cheesy. If you go into this movie tofind some serious drama than you are going to be let down. Since thisis not a real downfall I will not mark the movie down like many of thenegative reviewers. Michael Cera was obviously type-casted wonderfullyas always. The part fits him like a glove and I don't wish for onesecond they cast someone else. Scott Pilgrim is meant to be an unfit, scrawny, and awkward nerd, which is presented beautifully. Wallace(played by Kieran Culkin) is another notable character being the sourceof many jokes about Cera's character and light, non-offensive gayjokes. Now on to the love interest. Ramona Flowers (Mary ElizabethWinstead) is perfect for the role. She is quite cute and of coursequite "anime esq." with her colorful dyed hair and dangling splitbangs. Carrying a fair amount of emotional baggage from her manybreak-ups with the "Seven Evil Ex's" is aloof and casual about hercautious love interest. She is loved a great deal by Scott and providesgood reason to fight the 7 ex's. The fight scenes are visuallystimulating and peppered with references to games like Street FighterII, Super Mario, and Zelda. Such is prevalent in the enemies of Pilgrim(Michael Cera) spurting coins with every hit and erupting into afountain of metal when defeated granting Scott points. The first enemyalso makes reference to a n annoyance many of us gamers had with StreetFighter. The Man sang about fireballs while levitating in the air anddidn't stop until he was silenced by a symbol to the face (what I wouldlike to think is a reference to "spamming the hadoken"). People aresaying the fight scenes get repetitive but I see little repetition. Myfavorite fight is the one with Evil Ex #3, Todd Ingram (played byBrandon Routh), who is a super vegan. This battle is the second Scottparticipates in and the first he tries to mix up the action with (I'dadd more detail, but I might spoil it). Effects are amazing. Both audioand video come together to make you feel like you are in some sort ofArcade/ Comic book hybrid. The experience is exclusively unique to thismovie. Basically, there is no doubt people who love over the topaction, Comic books, and especially video games should go and see thismovie.

Horrible, Pretentious Movie

I don't get this movie. I feel that it really sucks and very seldom doI find modern cinema that fails as bad as Scott Pilgrim does whilegetting good ratings at the same time. Excellent rating, even. IMDb,you failed me once again.Lets first say that no wonder this movie failed horribly at thetheater. The acting and the special effects were not bad. Unique, should I say. What made this movie such a bad movie is the fact thatthe storyline was so boring and don't make much sense. You try to find some meaning out of it but in the end it is what it is.Crap covered in chocolate. It's still crap, but hey, it looks cool.

Guitar Hero

The FilmIf you can find a better piece of ridiculous nonsense to kill off an afternoon, I'll buy you a coke. Scott Pilgrim is a fresh and preposterous journey back to the days of youth you may not want to remember. Edgar Wright goes all the way with this comic adaptation and pulls no punches. It veers from the elaborate, if overlong, action sequences to good old fashioned one-liners..."HE PUNCHED THE HIGHLIGHTS OUT OF HER HAIR!!!"Scott Pilgrim vs The World has the same pulse as Tom Tekwer's "Lola Rent" paired with visuals right out of Cowboy Bebop. The only gripe I had was Michael Cera is getting a bit long in the tooth for these aloof post teen deadpan parts. He's alright, but I really anted to see somebody new. I'm not sure Mary Elizabeth Winstead is good, or like Scott we just are enamored with her polychromatic hair styles. It's not perfect, but by the end, you're glad you saw it.It's worth it for the Vegan Police alone. The Blu-RayHigh-Def Digest had a good tip off that this one looks a bit flat. I have to agree. In the theater, this thing was like walking down the red light district in Hong Kong. On my Bravia, it comes off a bit muddy considering all the colorful effects work. Blacks are more grey and there's not much pop to the colors. It looks clean but I can't imagine the regular DVD being much of a consolation. Its good but a bit disappointing. The Film 4/5The Blu-Ray 4/5

Scott Pilgrim Must Die

This movie, for all it's attempts to be trendy, flashy, fresh and fun, was a disappointment because of Micheal Cera and his uninspired and unlikeable character of Scott Pilgrim. I don't want this guy to get the girl, or any girl, or anything. I want the League of Evil Exes to crush him. I want to see him badly broken and working in a McDonald's to make ends meet, lamenting on his wasted youth. He's terrible. The special effects, the amazing and very entertaining supportive cast and the quirky humor saved his from being a one star, but with the main character of the movie being so unlikeable I couldn't get past a two star. It's worth watching, but I found myself just wanting to know more about everyone except Scott Pilgrim.

Couldn't suck more...

A completely retarded movie, I have no idea why its rated 7.7 in here. There were just a few moments in the movie which were really amusingbut the rest of the movie sucked big time. Why the hell waste so muchmoney and time on such a retarded movie. It wasn't worth the effort. The worst part is the name of the movie, It shouldn't be Scott Pilgrimvs. The World, it should have been Scott Pilgrim vs. The Audience orScott Pilgrim vs. Sensible humor. This is my first review on IMDb, Imone of the laziest guys anyone would ever know, yet Im writing a reviewon this movie, Imagine how much mind f***d I got after watching thistotal crap. If I ever meet the story writer or the director of thismovie, I would kick on his nuts and pee on his face:@

Bence Locsei 16 March 2012

Fantastic!

Teenager problems (find yourself, get real, etc.) might not giveanything to people considering themselves mayor adults, but considerthis is a movie built on arcade video gaming motifs, I don't think itconcerns mayor adults at all in the first place. I for one did notnecessarily long for dark moral drama in this particular movie at all,I think the story was just about right for this movie, but you decide,if this is childish watch Haneke. Now for the rest: Surprisingly, Scott Pilgrim features the best martialarts scenes in years. Every fight is choreographed and executed in themost awesome ways and the fact that it's not Jet Lee pulling off thesemoves makes it even more fun to watch. And you get the fightsabsolutely frequently which is really, really satisfying. The editingis incredibly skillful as probably the most crucial element that makesthis work. It gives the movie an incredible rhythm, reaching new levelsof dynamism and the use of CGI and the visual design is plainfantastic. The amount of creativity put into this part is mind-blowing, resulting genuine and most original style. The cast is cooland I don't think anyone should look for academy material here. I likedthese kids and they suit the movie. So, all together I found Scott Pilgrim being one of the most original, exciting and fun productions I've seen in my life. As a huge fan ofthings like fighting games, comics, or martial arts anime I feltsatisfied to a point of screaming 'awesome' out loud after 30 minutesinto the movie. Though people who never played Street Fighter or keptcrossing fingers for Goku and friends yelling 'kamehameha' as evilbosses get pulverized by energy beams might not really get what ScottPilgrim is about, it's very hard to deny the originality featured andthe creative and professional qualities of the way it's executed.Fantastic! 8/10
